Abstract
A novel colorimetric-fluorescent dual-mode chemosensor (JT5) based on rhodamine B has been produced for monitoring Sn4+ in the DMSO/H2O (4:1, v/v) medium. It has high sensitivity, a low detection limit, a short response time (1 s) and high stability, and can still be maintained after two weeks with the red dual fluorescence/ colorimetric response. Enhancement of red fluorescence (591 nm) and red colorimetric (567 nm) response of JT5 by Sn4+ addition. The electrostatic potential of the sensor JT5 molecule was simulated to speculate on the sensing mechanism, and the IR, mass spectrometry and 1H NMR titration were utilized to further demonstrate that JT5 was coordinated to Sn4+ with a 1:1 type, the rhodamine spironolactam ring of JT5 opens up to form a penta-membered ring with Sn4+, meanwhile, its system may have chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. In addition, theoretical calculations were carried out to give the energy gaps of JT5 and [JT5 + Sn4+] as well as to simulate the electronic properties of the maximal absorption peaks. Notably, the sensor JT5 was successfully applied to monitoring Sn4+ in zebrafish, and the JT5-loaded filter paper provided a solid-state platform for detecting Sn4+ by both naked eye and fluorescent methods. In summary, this work contributes to monitoring Sn4+ in organisms and solid-state materials and promotes understanding of Sn4+ functions in biological systems, environments, and solid-state materials.

Abstract
A pyrene-based e xcited - state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) active probe PMHMP was synthesized, characterized, and employed for the ppb-level, dual-mode, and high-fidelity detection of Cu2+ (LOD: 7.8 ppb) and Zn2+ ions (LOD: 4.2 ppb) in acetonitrile medium. The colorless solution of PMHMP turned yellow upon the addition of Cu2+, suggesting its ratiometric, naked-eye sensing. On the contrary, Zn2+ ions displayed concentration-dependent fluorescence rise till a 0.5 mole fraction and subsequent quenching. Mechanistic investigations indicated the formation of a 1:2 exciplex (Zn2+:PMHMP) at a lower concentration of Zn2+, which eventually turned into a more stable 1:1 (Zn2+:PMHMP) complex with an additional amount of Zn2+ ions. However, in both cases, it was observed that the hydroxyl group and the nitrogen atom of the azomethine unit were involved in the metal ion coordination, which eventually altered the ESIPT emission. Furthermore, a green-fluorescent 2:1 PMHMP-Zn2+ complex was developed and additionally employed for the fluorimetric analysis of both Cu2+ and H2PO4 - ions. The Cu2+ ion, owing to its higher binding affinity for PMHMP, could replace the Zn2+ ion from the preformed complex. On the other hand, H2PO4 - formed a tertiary adduct with the Zn2+-complex, leading to a distinguishable optical signal. Furthermore, extensive and organized density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the ESIPT behavior of PMHMP and the geometrical and electronic properties of the metal complexes.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe SHK for Zn2+ detection was designed based on the hydrazone Schiff base, successfully synthesized by Suzuki coupling and condensation reactions. The probe SHK in DMSO/H2O showed extremely weak fluorescence. However, the solution exhibited an intensive yellow-green emission with the introduction of Zn2+. In contrast, negligible fluorescence change was observed when other metal ions were added, suggesting a high selectivity of SHK for Zn2+ detection. The Job's Plot analysis revealed that a 1:1 stoichiometric adduct SHK-Zn2+ formed during the Zn2+ sensing. The binding constant of the complex was determined to be 184 M- 1, and the detection limit for Zn2+ was calculated to be 112 µM. Moreover, the probe SHK achieved selective fluorescence sensing for Zn2+ on test strips, which guaranteed its practical application prospect.

Abstract
Using 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid hydrazine and 4-(diethylamino) salicylaldehyde. as raw materials, compound L with an acylhydrazones structure was synthesized. The structure of compound L was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray single crystal diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The results show that Compound L can quickly and selectively recognize zinc ions in the H2O/DMSO (V:V = 3:7) solvent system. After that, the spectral performance of probe L was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results show that the combination with Zn2+ can significantly enhance the fluorescence intensity of probe L while being almost unaffected by other coexisting ions. After that, Job's curve method, nuclear magnetic titration analysis, and mass spectrometry were used to study the binding mechanism of probe L and Zn2+. The results showed that probe L coordinated with Zn2+ is 1:1. The linear equations of different concentrations of Zn2+ and fluorescence intensity were obtained by fitting, and the detection limit of probe L for Zn2+ was determined to be 6.75 × 10-9 mol/L. The experimental study of standard addition and recovery showed that probe L could be used for the quantitative detection of Zn2+ in natural water samples. After that, we prepared L-doped sodium alginate hydrogel (SAL). The research results show that SAL has obvious adsorption capacity for Zn2+ in solution, and the color change before and after adsorption can be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. SEM-EDS study showed that the microscopic morphology and composition of SAL changed significantly before and after adsorption. This fluorescent probe can be used for detection and removal of Zn2+ in aqueous solution. Also, probe L is effective for sensing for zinc (II) in living tumor cells. Overall, this work allows us to obtain a great potential to be applied to detect and remove Zn2+.

Abstract
A half-conjugate polydentate Salamo-Salen hybrid ligand, H5L, containing two unique N2O2 pockets was first designed so that these metal ions in the complexes appear in different coordination modes. Two heterohexanuclear 3d-s double-helical cluster complexes, [Zn4Ca2L2(μ1-OAc)2(EtOH)2]·2EtOH (1; EtOH = ethanol) and [Zn4Sr2L2(μ2-OAc)2(MeOH)2]·2CH2Cl2 (2; MeOH = methanol), are reported that are formed through the reaction of H5L with zinc(II) and calcium(II) acetate or strontium(II) acetate, respectively. IR spectral analysis of the two complexes showed the existence of monodentate- and bidentate-coordinated acetate ions. The fluorescence properties of the ligand and its two heterohexanuclear complexes were explored in MeOH and water solutions, separately. In addition, theoretical calculations (density functional theory, interaction region indicator, and bond order) were performed to further understand the formation of a single-molecular double helix and the electron distribution characteristics of the two complexes.

Abstract
A novel turn-on fluorescence probe L has been designed that exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 9.53 × 10−8 mol/L for the quantification of Zn2+. 1H-NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unsymmetrical nature of the structure of the Schiff base probe L. An emission titration experiment in the presence of different molar fractions of Zn2+ was used to perform a Job’s plot analysis. The results showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by L and Zn2+ was 1:1. Moreover, the molecular structure of the mononuclear Cu complex reveals one ligand L coordinates with one Cu atom in the asymmetric unit. On adding CuCl2 to the ZnCl2/L system, a Cu-Zn complex was formed and a strong quenching behavior was observed, which inferred that the Cu2+ displaced Zn2+ to coordinate with the imine nitrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of probe L.

Abstract
A newly designed Schiff base probe JN has been synthesized. It is highly selective and sensitive towards Al3+ in nearly 100% aqueous medium by exhibiting a dramatic "turn-on" fluorescence response at 495 nm (λex = 450 nm). The sensing mechanism of JN towards Al3+ ions was proposed as the combination of PET, ICT, ESIPT, and CHEF processes according to spectra studies and theory calculations. The in situ generated mononuclear Al(III) complex JN-Al3+ could sequentially detect PPi ions by turn-off fluorescence response. The selectivity and sensitivity of the JN-Al3+ complex towards PPi ions are based on demetalization process. Interestingly, the fact that Al3+ can bind with 1, 2, or 3 PPi has been revealed by HRMS study. The probes JN and JN-Al3+ complexes were able to capture Al3+ and PPi ions, respectively, as demonstrated by fluorescence imaging of the adult zebrafish and onion inner epidermal cells samples.

Abstract
Supramolecular hydrogels are attracting soft materials with potential applications. In this study, we synthesized a facile gelator (named 2-QF) based on phenylalanine derivative with a Quinoline group. 2-QF can assemble to form hydrogels at room temperature in different colors under low pH values. Moreover, 2-QF was triggered to form a yellow metallohydrogel (2-QF-Zn) at high pH by the coordination between 2-QF and Zn2+. 2-QF-Zn metallohydrogel showed excellent multi-stimuli responsiveness, especially the reversible "on-off" luminescence switching, as induced by base/acid. In addition, at a low concentration, 2-QF can selectively and visibly identify Zn2+ through fluorescence enhancement, and can detect Zn2+ at physiological pH as a chemosensor. Remarkably, 2-QF and 2-QF-Zn exhibited an excellent biocompatibility without cell cytotoxicity, and 2-QF is able to penetrate live HeLa cells and image intracellular Zn2+ by a turn-on fluorescent response, which makes it a potential candidate for biomedical applications.
