An investigation into the magnetic interactions in a series of Dy2 single-molecule magnets

Highly Stable Rare Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Recognition of Folic Acid, Proton Conduction, and Magnetic Refrigeration

Four new isostructural rare earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) were synthesized and full characterized, namely, {[(CH)2NH2]3[RE2(BTDBA)2(HCOO)]·5H2O·2DMF}n (H4BTDBA = (4',4'''-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis([1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid); RE = Eu (JXUST-34), Gd (JXUST-35), Tb (JXUST-36), and Dy (JXUST-37)). The single-crystal structures analysis shows that JXUST-34-37 are chain-based three-dimensional structures. Importantly, JXUST-34 exhibits excellent water, organic solvents, and acid-base stability, which can be used as a fluorescence sensor for folic acid and Al3+ with detection limits of 0.02 mM and 0.05 μM, respectively. The presence of free [(CH)2NH2]+ cations in the channels can engage the proton carrier during proton conduction. JXUST-34-37 display good proton conductivity, and the conductivities vary with relative humidity and temperatures, among which JXUST-37 has the highest conductivity of 9.66 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 60 °C and 98% RH. The magnetic studies show that the -ΔSm of JXUST-35 reaches 16.13 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and ΔH = 7 T. JXUST-34-37 show multifunctional properties of fluorescence sensing, high proton conductivity, and magnetic refrigeration, which provides a new clue for the development of fluorescent-responsive, magnetic-refrigerant, and proton-conductive RE-MOF materials.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12(L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation also called subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy6(L)6 or Dy12(L)8 aggregates resulting from second-order template effects of the base and the lanthanide counterions used in these processes. XRD analysis revealed unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures in which the bis(hydrazone) ligand L adopts different conformations and shows remarkable differences in its mode of metal coordination. While a molecule of trimethylamine acts as a secondary template that fills the void of the Dy6(L)6 assembly, sodium ions take on this role for the formation of heterobimetallic Dy12(L)8 by occupying vacant coordination sites, thus demonstrating that these processes can be steered in different directions upon subtle changes of reaction conditions. Furthermore, Dy6(L)6 shows an interesting spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, which is amongst the largest values within multinuclear lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Stable Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks with Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensing for Amino Acids and Tunable Proton Conduction and Magnetic Properties

Four new isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Ln(DMTP-DC)_1.5(H₂O)₃]·DMF}_n [H₂DMTP-DC = 2',5'-dimethoxytriphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; Ln^III = Eu^III (1), Gd^III (2), Tb^III (3), and Dy^III (4)], have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analysis reveals that 1-4 are three-dimensional Ln-MOFs with rich H-bonding of coordinated H₂O molecules in the network channels. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that Ln-MOF 1 displays good stabilities in organic solvents and aqueous solutions with distinct pH values. Both 1 and 3 show characteristic emission of Ln^III ions. Ln-MOF 1 can be used as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for arginine and lysine in aqueous solution, and the detection limits are 24.38 μM for arginine and 9.31 μM for lysine. All 1-4 show proton conductivity related to relative humidity (RH) and temperature, and the maximum conductivity values of 1-4 at 55 °C and 100% RH are 9.94 × 10^-5, 1.62 × 10^-4, 1.71 × 10^-4, and 2.67 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1, respectively. The value of σ increases with the decrease in ionic radius, indicating that the radius of the Ln^III ions can regulate the proton conductivity of these MOFs. Additionally, 2 exhibits a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) with a magnetic entropy change (-ΔS_m) of 18.86 J kg^-1 K^-1 for ΔH = 7 T at 2 K, and 4 shows weak field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization. The coexistence of good fluorescence sensing capability, attractive proton conductivity, and relatively large MCE in Ln-MOFs is rare, and thus, 1-4 are potentially multifunctional MOF materials.

A Sodium Sodate as Precursor for Lanthanide Bis(4-R-benzoxazol-2-yl)methanide Single-Molecule Magnets

From the sodium sodate precursor [(Na(thf)₆][Na{(4-Me-NCOC₆H₃)₂CH}₂] (1) three isostructural dinuclear lanthanide complexes [(μ-Cl)Ln^III{(4-MeNCOC₆H₃)₂CH}₂]₂ with Ln = Gd (2), Dy (3), and Er (4) based on the N,N'-chelating monoanionic bis(4-methylbenzoxazol-2-yl)methanide ligand (titled "Mebox") were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The sodium precursor 1 was analyzed via X-ray diffraction and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy experiments (DOSY-NMR) in order to investigate its aggregation in solution and the solid state. The sodium analog [(thf)₃Na(NCOC₆H₄)₂CH] (1') based on the bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-methanide ligand (titled "box") was prepared and analyzed for comparison reasons. From the lanthanide derivatives 2-4, the Dy^III complex 3 displays slow relaxation of magnetization at zero field, with a relaxation barrier of U = 315.7 cm^-1. The coupling strength between the two lanthanide centers was estimated with the Gd^III equivalent 2, giving a weak antiferromagnetic coupling of J = -0.035 cm^-1.

Macrocycle based dinuclear dysprosium(III) single molecule magnets with local D5h coordination geometry

Targeted approaches for manipulating the coordination geometry of lanthanide ions are a promising way to synthesize high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs), but most of the successful examples reported to date focus on mononuclear complexes. Herein, we describe a strategy to assemble dinuclear SMMs with Dy^III ions in approximate D_5h coordination geometry based on pyrazolate-based macrocyclic ligands with two binding sites. A Dy4 complex with a rhomb-like arrangement of four Dy^III as well as two dinuclear complexes having axial chlorido ligands (Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl) were obtained; in the latter case, substituting Cl^- by SCN^- gave Dy2·SCN. Magneto-structural studies revealed that the μ-OH bridges with short Dy-O bonds dominate the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy^III ions in centrosymmetric Dy4 to give a vortex type diamagnetic ground state. Dynamic magnetic studies of Dy4 identified two relaxation processes under zero field, one of which is suppressed after applying a dc field. For complexes Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl, the Dy^III ions feature almost perfect D_5h environment, but both complexes only behave as field-induced SMMs (U_eff = 19 and 25 K) due to the weak axial Cl^- donors. In Dy2·SCN additional MeOH coordination leads to a distorted D_2d geometry of the Dy^III ions, yet SMMs properties at zero field are observed due to the relatively strong axial ligand field provided by SCN^- (U_eff = 43 K). Further elaboration of preorganizing macrocyclic ligands appears to be a promising strategy for imposing a desired coordination geometry with parallel orientation of the anisotropy axes of proximate Dy^III ions in a targeted approach.

Coordination anion effects on the geometry and magnetic interaction of binuclear Dy2 single-molecule magnets

Two new dimeric dysprosium(III) complexes, [Dy₂(HL)₂(SCN)₂]·2CH₃CN (1) and [Dy₂(HL)₂(NO₃)₂]·2CH₃CN·2H₂O (2), have been assembled using the H₃L multidentate ligand (H₃L = 2,2'-((((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene))bis((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl))bis(methylene))diphenol). The use of different coordination anions for the two complexes results in distinct coordination geometries of the metal sites. The Dy centers in complexes 1 and 2 display capped octahedron and triangular dodecahedron coordination geometries, respectively. Consequently, the two compounds exhibit distinct dc and ac magnetic properties. Complex 1 behaves as a single molecule magnet (SMM) while no SMM behavior is observed for complex 2. Although complexes 1 and 2 possess a similar core of Dy₂O₂, their different coordination anions lead to two distinct magnetic interactions, namely ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Ab initio calculations reveal that these interactions may result from strong intramolecular dipolar couplings that are ferromagnetic for 1 but antiferromagnetic for 2, while exchange couplings are antiferromagnetic in both cases.

Homochiral Ferromagnetic Coupling Dy2 Single-Molecule Magnets with Strong Magneto-Optical Faraday Effects at Room Temperature

By the bridging action of the 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (Hchp) ligand and the terminal coordination role of the homochiral ligand, (-)/(+)-3-trifluoroacetyl camphor (l-Htfc/d-Htfc), a pair of enantiomerically pure dysprosium(III) dinuclear complexes, [Dy₂(l-tfc)₄(chp)₂(MeOH)₂] (l-1) and [Dy₂(d-tfc)₄(chp)₂(MeOH)₂] (d-1), was obtained. Their circular dichroism (CD) spectra verified their enantiomeric nature. Magnetic investigation indicated that they exhibit ferromagnetic interaction and good zero field single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. The U_eff/k values of l-1 and d-1 at 0 Oe are 180.5 and 181.3 K, respectively, which are large values for homochiral Dy(III) SMMs. A reasonable explanation for the magnetic properties of l-1 and d-1 was supplied by ab initio calculations. Remarkably, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) investigation revealed that the chiral Dy₂ enantiomers show a strong magneto-optical Faraday effect at room temperature, suggesting potential applications in magneto-optical devices.

In Situ Ligand Formation in the Synthetic Processes from Mononuclear Dy(III) Compounds to Binuclear Dy(III) Compounds: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic Behavior, and Theoretical Analysis

Guided by the self-assembled process and mechanism, the strategy of in situ Schiff base reaction would be capable of bringing a feasible method to construct and synthesize lanthanide compounds with distinct structures and magnetic properties. A mononuclear Dy(III) compound was synthesized through a multidentate Schiff base ligand and a chelating β-diketonate ligand, which was named as [Dy(L)(bppd)]·CH₃OH [1; H₂L = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-formylbenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bppd = 3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione]. Furthermore, a new binuclear Dy(III) compound, [Dy₂(H₂Lox)(bppd)₃]·8CH₃OH [2; H₄Lox = N,N'-bis[2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-(hydroxyiminomethyl)benzyl]-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine], was obtained via an in situ synthetic process. Under similar synthetic conditions, [Dy(L)(ctbd)] [3; ctbd = 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butanedione] and [Dy₂(H₂Lox)(ctbd)₃]·CH₃OH·C₄H₁₀O (4) were synthesized by modifying the β-diketonate ligand and in situ Schiff base reaction. Compound 3 is a mononuclear configuration, while compound 4 exhibits a binuclear Dy(III) unit. Therein, formylbenzyl groups of H₂L in 1 and 3 were changed to (hydroxyiminomethyl)benzyl groups in 2 and 4, respectively. In isomorphous 2 and 4, two Dy(III) centers are connected through two phenol O^- atoms of the H₂Lox^2- ligand to form a binuclear structure. Eight-coordinated Dy(III) ions with different distortions can be observed in 1-4. The crystals of 1 and 3 suffered dissolution/precipitation to obtain 2 and 4, respectively. The relationship between the structure and magnetism in compounds 1-4 was discussed through the combination of structural, experimental, and theoretical investigations. Especially, the rates of quantum tunneling of magnetization of 1-4 were theoretically predicted and are consistent with the experimental results. For 2 and 4, the theoretically calculated dipolar parameters J_dip are consistent with the experimental observation of weak ferromagnetic coupling.

A series of dysprosium clusters assembled by a substitution effect-driven out-to-in growth mechanism

The diacylhydrazone ligands with different substituents were reacted with Dy(NO₃)₃·6H₂O to obtain 16 nuclear (1) and 10 nuclear (2) and pentanuclear (3) dysprosium clusters. Clusters 1–3 are gradually formed through out-to-in growth mechanism.

Tuning magnetic anisotropy via terminal ligands along the Dy⋯Dy orientation in novel centrosymmetric [Dy2] single molecule magnets

The SMM properties of four dinuclear Dy^III complexes can be effectively tuned by the appropriate alteration of terminal ligands and lattice guests.

A cobalt complex with 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamine)-1,3,5-triazine: antiferromagnetic couple governed single-molecule-magnet behaviour

One cobalt complex with distorted trigonal antiprismatic geometry was obtained using 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamine)-1,3,5-triazine (dipyatriz) as the ligand. X-ray crystallography showed the complex possessing a pair of metal centers, had an antiferromagnetic coupling between two Co(ii) ions. Further studied showed a field-induced slow relaxation under H_dc = 0.8 kOe. The peak of out-of-phase was observed after 1000 Hz, which exhibited a moderate slow-relaxation behaviour comparing to the magnetic couple for single Co(ii) complex. This study may provide some strategies on designing new functional molecular magnetic materials with distinct magnetic properties and diverse the structures.
