The role of agostic interaction in the mechanism of ethylene polymerisation using Cr(III) half-sandwich complexes: What dictates the reactivity?

Chromium-based catalysts play a significant role in the production of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and half-sandwich functionalised-metallocene complexes were proven to be one of the most suitable candidates as catalysts for generating such large polymeric-length olefins. Earlier experimental studies on olefin polymerisation using a series of catalysts such as [L1-2CrCl2] (where L1 = 1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)indenyl (1) and L2 = 2-methyl-1-{[4-(yridinene-1-yl)yridine-2-yl]methyl}-1H-indenyl (2)) reveal significant variation where peripheral substitution on the ligand was found to influence the reactivity significantly. However, the specific ligand position that affects the reactivity has not been established. As these reactions are fast and robust, it is challenging to establish reactive intermediates via experiments, and therefore, mechanistic clues for such reactions are elusive. Here we have undertaken a detailed computational study by employing an array of DFT (uB3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP, CASSCF/NEVPT2, and DLPNO-CCSD(T) methods to explore the substituted and non-substituted pyridine-cyclo-pentadienyl chromium complexes and their influence on the catalytic activity in ethylene polymerisation. Our study not only unravels the catalytic pathway for olefin polymerisation for such Cr(III)-half-sandwich complexes but also reveals that the energetics of the formation of pseudo-three-coordinate alkyl intermediates is key to the variation in the reactivity observed. A detailed examination using MO and NBO analysis unveils the presence of a C-H⋯Cr agostic interaction that is found to significantly stabilise this intermediate when the pyridine ligand has strong electron-donating groups at its para position. The other substitutions, such as on the cyclopentadienyl ligand, neither yield the desired stability nor the desired interaction. Further studies on models support this proposal. In order to improve the efficiency and selectivity of catalytic systems in olefin polymerisation, we strongly advocate for the integration of agostic interactions as a crucial criterion in the design of future catalysts. Considering the prevalence of electron-deficient metal centres in successful olefin polymerisation catalysts, this research prompts a broader mechanistic inquiry to propose a unified approach for this industrially crucial reaction.

A Predictably Selective Palladium-Catalyzed Aliphatic C-H Oxygenation

Direct oxygenation of nonactivated aliphatic C(sp³)-H groups with peroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of palladium tris(pyridylmethyl)amine complex (0.6 mol %) is reported, providing the corresponding hydroxylated derivatives in up to 94% yields. The oxidation of 3° C-H groups occurs stereospecifically, with the catalyst system demonstrating extremely high sensitivity to electronic effects (adamantane oxidation: 3°:2° up to >300). This suggests potential applications for the 3°-regioselective oxidative functionalization of complex molecules of natural origin.

Organo-photocatalytic C-H bond oxidation: an operationally simple and scalable method to prepare ketones with ambient air

Oxidative C-H functionalization with O₂ is a sustainable strategy to convert feedstock-like chemicals into valuable products. Nevertheless, eco-friendly O₂-utilizing chemical processes, which are scalable yet operationally simple, are challenging to develop. Here, we report our efforts, via organo-photocatalysis, in devising such protocols for catalytic C-H bond oxidation of alcohols and alkylbenzenes to ketones using ambient air as the oxidant. The protocols employed tetrabutylammonium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate as the organic photocatalyst which is readily available from a scalable ion exchange of inexpensive salts and is easy to separate from neutral organic products. Cobalt(ii) acetylacetonate was found to be greatly instrumental to oxidation of alcohols and therefore was included as an additive in evaluating the alcohol scope. The protocols employed a nontoxic solvent, could accommodate a variety of functional groups, and were readily scaled to 500 mmol scale in a simple batch setting using round-bottom flasks and ambient air. A preliminary mechanistic study of C-H bond oxidation of alcohols supported the validity of one possible mechanistic pathway, nested in a more complex network of potential pathways, in which the anthraquinone form - the oxidized form - of the photocatalyst activates alcohols and the anthrahydroquinone form - the relevant reduced form of the photocatalyst - activates O₂. A detailed mechanism, which reflected such a pathway and was consistent with previously accepted mechanisms, was proposed to account for formation of ketones from aerobic C-H bond oxidation of both alcohols and alkylbenzenes.

Novel Copper(II) Complexes with Dipinodiazafluorene Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic and Catalytic Properties

The reactions of CuX₂ (X = Cl, Br) with dipinodiazafluorenes yielded four new complexes [CuX₂L₁]₂ (X = Cl (1), Br (2), L₁ = (1R,3R,8R,10R)-2,2,9,9-Tetramethyl-3,4,7,8,9,10-hexahydro-1H-1,3:8,10-dimethanocyclopenta [1,2-b:5,4-b’]diquinolin-12(2H)-one) and [(CuX₂)₂L₂]n (X = Cl (3), Br (4), L₂ = (1R,3R,8R,10R,1’R,3’R,8’R,10’R)-2,2,2’,2’,9,9,9’,9’-Octamethyl-1,1’,2,2’,3,3’,4,4’,7,7’,8,8’,9,9’,10,10’-hexadecahydro-1,3:1’,3’:8,10:8’,10’-tetramethano-12,12’-bi(cyclopenta [1,2-b:5,4-b’]diquinolinylidene). The complexes were characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopy, HR-ESI-MS and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of compounds 1, 2 and 4 were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Complexes 1–2 have a monomeric structure, while complex 4 has a polymeric structure due to additional coordinating N,N sites in L₂. All complexes contain a binuclear fragment {Cu₂(μ-X)_2×2} (X = Cl, Br) in their structures. Each copper atom has a distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment formed by two nitrogen atoms and three halogen atoms. The Cu-N_ax distance is elongated compared to Cu-N_eq. The EPR spectra of compounds 1–4 in CH₃CN confirm their paramagnetic nature due to the d⁹ electronic configuration of the copper(II) ion. The magnetic properties of all compounds were studied by the method of static magnetic susceptibility. For complexes 1 and 2, the effective magnetic moments are µ_eff ≈ 1.87 and 1.83 µ_B (per each Cu²⁺ ion), respectively, in the temperature range 50–300 K, which are close to the theoretical spin value (1.73 µ_B). Ferromagnetic exchange interactions between Cu(II) ions inside {Cu₂(μ-X)₂X₂} (X = Cl, Br) dimers (J/k_B ≈ 25 and 31 K for 1 and 2, respectively) or between dimers (θ′ ≈ 0.30 and 0.47 K for 1 and 2, respectively) were found at low temperatures. For compounds 3 and 4, the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the Curie–Weiss law in the temperature range 1.77–300 K with µ_eff ≈ 1.72 and 1.70 µ_B for 3 and 4, respectively, and weak antiferromagnetic interactions (θ ≈ −0.4 K for 3 and −0.65 K for 4). Complexes 1–4 exhibit high catalytic activity in the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with peroxides. The maximum yield of cyclohexane oxidation products reached 50% (complex 3). Based on the data on the study of regio- and bond-selectivity, it was concluded that hydroxyl radicals play a decisive role in the oxidation reaction. The initial products in reactions with alkanes are alkyl hydroperoxides.

The Stronger the Better: Donor Substituents Push Catalytic Activity of Molecular Chromium Olefin Polymerization Catalysts

The donor strength of bifunctional pyridine-cyclopentadienyl ligands was altered systematically by the introduction of donating groups in the para-position of the pyridine. In the resulting chromium complexes an almost linear correlation between donor strength and the nitrogen-chromium distance as well as the electronic absorption maximum is experimentally observed. The connection of electron-donating groups in the ligand backbone leads to an efficient transfer of the electronic influences to the catalytically active metal centre without restricting it through steric effects. Therefore, catalytic olefin polymerization activity, which is already very high for the previously studied catalysts, increase considerably by attaching para-amino groups to the chelating pyridine or quinoline, respectively. Combining electron-rich indenyl ligands with para-amino substituted pyridines lead to the highest catalytic activities observed so far for this class of organo chromium olefin polymerisation catalysts. The resulting polymers are of ultra-high molecular weight and the ability of the catalysts to incorporate co-monomers is also very high.

Low-Spin and High-Spin Perferryl Intermediates in Non-Heme Iron Catalyzed Oxidations of Aliphatic C-H Groups

The selectivity patterns of iron catalysts of the Fe(PDP) family in aliphatic C-H oxidation with H₂ O₂ have been studied (PDP=N,N'-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyrrolidine). Cyclohexane, adamantane, 1-bromo-3,7-dimethyloctane, 3,7-dimethyloctyl acetate, (-)-acetoxy-p-menthane, and cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane were used as substrates. The studied catalyst systems generate low-spin (S=1/2) oxoiron(V) intermediates or high-spin (S=3/2) oxoiron(V) intermediates, depending on the electron-donating ability of remote substituents at the pyridine rings. The low-spin perferryl intermediates demonstrate lower stability and higher reactivity toward aliphatic C-H groups of cyclohexane than their high-spin congeners, according to the measured self-decay and second-order rate constants k₁ and k₂ . Unexpectedly, there appears to be no uniform correlation between the spin state of the oxoiron(V) intermediates, and the chemo- and regioselectivity of the corresponding catalyst systems in the oxidation of the considered substrates. This contrasts with the asymmetric epoxidations by the same catalyst systems, in which case the epoxidation enantioselectivity increases when passing from the systems featuring the more reactive low-spin perferryl intermediates to those with their less reactive high-spin congeners.
