Abstract
The regular and on-site monitoring of ions in drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health, ensuring high water quality, and preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, developing a portable analytical device for the rapid, cost-effective, and visual on-site detection of multiple environmental pollutants is notably significant. In the present work, a novel ratiometric microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed and developed for the simultaneous detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in water samples taking advantages from built-in masking zone. The μPAD was functionalized with a greenish-yellow fluorescent Zn-based metal-organic framework@tetracycline (FMOF-5@TC) nanocomposite, and the ratiometric design was based on the change in emission color from greenish yellow (FMOF-5@TC) to blue (FMOF-5). The μPAD consisted of one sample zone linked to two detection zones via two channels: the first channel was for the detection of both ions, while the second was intended for detecting only Cu2+ ions and comprised a built-in masking zone to remove Fe3+ ions prior to reaching the detection zone. The corresponding color changes were recorded with the aid of a smartphone and RGB calculations. The linear ranges were 0.1-80 μM for Cu2+ and 0.2-160 μM for Fe3+, with limits of detection of 0.027 and 0.019 μM, respectively. The simple μPAD design enabled the simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions in drinking water samples with excellent accuracy and precision, with spike recoveries of 81.28-96.36% and 83.01-102.33% for Cu2+ and Fe3+, respectively.

Abstract
Luminescent materials responsive to external stimuli have captivated great attention owing to their potential implementation in noninvasive photonic sensors. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), a type of porous crystalline material, have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for these applications. Moreover, LMOFs constructed with organic linkers that undergo excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) reactions are particularly relevant since changes in the surrounding environment induce modifications in their emission properties. Herein, an ESIPT-based LMOF, UiO-66-(OH)2, has been synthesized, spectroscopically and photodynamically characterized, and tested for detecting multiple external stimuli. First, the spectroscopic and photodynamic characterization of the organic linker (2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHT)) and the UiO-66-(OH)2 MOF demonstrates that the emission properties are mainly governed by the enol → keto tautomerization, occurring in the organic linker via the ESIPT reaction. Afterward, the UiO-66-(OH)2 MOF proves for the first time to be a promising candidate to detect vapors of acid (HCl) and base (Et3N) toxic chemicals, changes in the mechanical compression (exercised pressure), and changes in the temperature. These results shed light on the potential of ESIPT-based LMOFs to be implemented in the development of advanced optical materials and luminescent sensors.

Abstract
Accurate on-site profiling of the pollutants is of vital significance for estimating environmental pollution. Herein, we propose a paper-based fluorescence-sensing system to precisely report the level of multiple pollutants. A high-performance fluorescence-sensor for apparatus-free and visual on-site tandem precisely reporting phosphate ions (Pi), o-phenylenediamine (OPD), and benzaldehyde (BA) levels have been fabricated successfully by introducing synthesized red emission (>600 nm) fluorescent chromophore 10-(diethylamino)-3-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrobenzo [c]xanthen-12-ium (HTD) into the environment of CoZn zeolitic imidazolate framework (CoZn ZIF) by a simple stirring method. CoZn ZIF@HTD with the bimetallic nodes not merely provided main Zn2+ sites for specific recognition of Pi to generate an enhanced red fluorescent optical signal, Co3+/Co2+ exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity for the catalytic oxidation of OPD substrate in the presence of H2O2 resulting in color changing from red to yellow. Subsequently, the obvious yellow fading of the OPDox species took place with the addition of BA. By virtue of the sensitively visual tandem detection of Pi, OPD, and BA, the sensor can be applied to real wastewater samples. Meanwhile, this fluorescent sensor was further adopted for practical application in confocal cell imaging and security inks. Overall, this work established a fluorescent sensing system with integrated multifunctional applications for environmental and biological samples, implying the great potential for simultaneous real-time cascade detection of various important pollutants with the merit of low-cost, time-saving, and easy-to-use.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a commonly used antibiotic for the treatment of infectious diseases in humans and as a prophylactic agent in the livestock industry, leading to the environmental discharge of significant amounts of CIP. CIP is stable in aquatic systems leading to its pseudo-persistence. Constant exposure to these antibiotics results in the generation of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and potential toxicity/hypersensitivity in humans. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a convenient, rapid, and cost-effective method for the monitoring of ciprofloxacin in environmental samples. Rhodamine-based fluorescent receptors have the limitation of aqueous solubility. Therefore, in order to overcome this drawback, we designed a novel fluorescent receptor based on a zirconium-based metal organic framework (MOF-808). The precursor, MOF-808, was synthesized and functionalized by using sodium citrate to obtain a receptor called C-MOF-808. The C-MOF-808 was structurally characterized by XRD and spectroscopic analyses. Thus, this synthesized receptor can be used for the fluorescent detection of CIP in aqueous media with a detection limit of 9.4 µM. The detection phenomena of the receptor were studied by absorption as well as fluorescent spectra. The binding behavior of CIP with the receptor was studied by FT-IR and 1H-NMR analyses, and a binding mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
Hydrazine (NH2 NH2 ) is a highly toxic organic substance that poses threat to human health. Monitoring hydrazine with high sensitivity and selectivity is very important. Herein, a simple colorimetric fluorescent probe for hydrazine detection, which is a seminaphthorhodafluor derivative containing thiophene-2-carboxylic acid ester reaction site, was rationally constructed. The probe itself exhibits weak fluorescence. The fluorescence is significantly enhanced when hydrazine is added. The probe exhibited a broad linear range (0-1 mM) with satisfactory selectivity and sensitivity (LOD 36.4 nM), which turns out to be an excellent fluorescent probe for monitoring hydrazine. Additionally, the probe was used to track hydrazine in living cells and zebrafish with great success, and the detection performance was satisfying. These results proved that this type of fluorescent probe with the thiophene-2-carboxylic acid ester structure can detect hydrazine with higher selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract
Here, we present a 4-nitrophenyl functionalized Zr-UiO-66 MOF (MOF = metal-organic framework) and its applications towards the selective, sensitive and rapid detection of H2S both in the aqueous medium and vapour phase. The MOF material was synthesized using the 2-(nitrophenoxy)terepththalic acid (H2BDC-O-Ph-NO2) linker and ZrCl4 salt in the presence of a benzoic acid modulator. It was carefully characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), FT-IR spectroscopy and surface area analysis. Noticeable thermal stability up to a temperature of 390 °C under air and the considerable chemical stability in different liquid media (H2O, 1 M HCl, glacial acetic acid, NaOH in the pH = 8 to 10 range) confirmed the robustness of the MOF. The BET surface area (1040 m2 g-1) indicated the porous nature of the MOF. Remarkable selectivity of the MOF towards H2S over other potential congeners of H2S was observed in the aqueous medium. A very high fluorescence increment (∼77 fold) was observed after adding an aqueous Na2S solution to the MOF suspension. The MOF probe displayed the lowest limit of detection (12.58 nM) among the existing MOF-based chemosensors of H2S. Furthermore, it exhibited a very quick (60 s) response towards H2S detection. The MOF compound could also detect H2S in the vapour phase as well as in real water samples. Furthermore, we developed inexpensive MOF-coated paper strips for the naked-eye sensing of H2S. A thorough investigation was carried out in order to elucidate the fluorescence turn-on sensing mechanism.

Abstract
Marine oil spill cleanup is one of the major challenges in recent years due to its detrimental effect on our ecosystem. Hence, the development of new superhydrophobic oil absorbent materials is in high demand. The third-generation porous materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have drawn great attention due to their fascinating properties. In this work, a superhydrophobic MOF with UiO-66 (SH-UiO-66) topology was synthesized strategically with a new fluorinated dicarboxylate linker to absorb oil selectively from water. The fully characterized superhydrophobic MOF showed extreme water repellency with an advancing water contact angle (WCA) of 160° with a contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of 8°. The newly synthesized porous MOF (SBET = 873 m2 g-1) material with high WCA found its promising application in oil/water separation. The superhydrophobic SH-UiO-66 MOF was further used for the in-situ coating on naturally abundant cotton fiber to make a superhydrophobic MOF@cotton composite material. The MOF-coated cotton fiber composite (SH-UiO-66@CFs) showed water repellency with a WCA of 163° and a low CAH of 4°. The flexible superhydrophobic SH-UiO-66@CFs showed an oil absorption capacity more than 2500 wt % for both heavy and light oils at room temperature. The superoleophilicity of SH-UiO-66@CFs was further exploited to separate light floating oil as well as sedimentary heavy oil from water. SH-UiO-66@CFs material can also separate oil from the oil/water mixture by gravity-directed active filtration. Hence, the newly developed MOF-based composite material has high potential as an oil absorbent material for marine oil spill cleanup.
