Controlled phosphating: a novel strategy toward NiP3@CeO2 interface engineering for efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Rare earth oxide based electrocatalysts: synthesis, properties and applications

As an important strategic resource, rare earths (REs) constitute 17 elements in the periodic table, namely 15 lanthanides (Ln) (La-Lu, atomic numbers from 57 to 71), scandium (Sc, atomic number 21) and yttrium (Y, atomic number 39). In the field of catalysis, the localization and incomplete filling of 4f electrons endow REs with unique physical and chemical properties, including rich electronic energy level structures, variable coordination numbers, etc., making them have great potential in electrocatalysis. Among various RE catalytic materials, rare earth oxide (REO)-based electrocatalysts exhibit excellent performances in electrocatalytic reactions due to their simple preparation process and strong structural variability. At the same time, the electronic orbital structure of REs exhibits excellent electron transfer ability, which can reduce the band gap and energy barrier values of rate-determining steps, further accelerating the electron transfer in the electrocatalytic reaction process; however, there is a lack of systematic review of recent advances in REO-based electrocatalysis. This review systematically summarizes the synthesis, properties and applications of REO-based nanocatalysts and discusses their applications in electrocatalysis in detail. It includes the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and other electrocatalytic reactions and further discusses the catalytic mechanism of REs in the above reactions. This review provides a timely and comprehensive summary of the current progress in the application of RE-based nanomaterials in electrocatalytic reactions and provides reasonable prospects for future electrocatalytic applications of REO-based materials.

Interfacial engineering of nickel selenide with CeO2 on N-doped carbon nanosheets for efficient methanol and urea electro-oxidation

The design of low cost, high efficiency electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reactions (MOR) and urea oxidation reactions (UOR) is a pressing need to address the energy crisis and water pollution. In the present work, we developed Cerium dioxide (CeO2) and nickel selenide (Ni0.85Se) nanoparticles integrated into three-dimensional N-doped carbon nanosheets to be used as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for MOR and UOR. By optimizing the selenization temperature, the CeO2-modified Ni0.85Se obtained at selenization temperature of 550 °C (CeO2-Ni0.85Se-550-NC) has the best MOR and UOR electrochemical performance. The CeO2-Ni0.85Se-550-NC potential only requires 1.309 V (MOR) and 1.294 V (UOR) to reach 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The DFT study reveals that CeO2-Ni0.85Se-550-NC has the best reaction path with the synergistic effect between CeO2 and Ni0.85Se. The outstanding catalytic performance of CeO2-Ni0.85Se-550-NC may be due to the cointeraction between CeO2 and Ni0.85Se, allowing more defects that function as catalytic sites while promoting fast electron transfer in the N-doped carbon substrate.

Spindle Nanorods of CeO2 and NiS Heterointerface Coated by the NC Layer: A High-Performance Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Currently, nickel sulfides are widely employed in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), thanks to the narrow electronegativity difference of only 0.67 eV between nickel and sulfur. Among them, NiS stands out in terms of the OER performance; however, its HER performance and stability remain somewhat inadequate. The construction of heterogeneous interfaces can efficiently improve the HER performance and regulate the electronic structure of the NiS catalyst. CeO2 has been discovered to possess exceptional electronic modulation capabilities, which may lead to the effective enhancement of both HER and OER of the NiS catalyst. As a result, a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CeO2-NiS heterogeneous interface catalyst (NC/NiS-CeO2) is designed as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and OER with high performance. The NC/NiS-CeO2 catalyst demonstrates excellent HER (47 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and OER (92 mV at 10 mA cm-2) performances in a 1 M KOH alkaline solution. Characterization analysis reveals that the coupling of the heterostructure interface, which consists of CeO2 and NiS, significantly enhances electron conduction, the synergistic effect, and the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode. This study demonstrates that the HER and OER activity can be effectively improved by constructing a rational heterogeneous interface.

Amorphous and defective Co-P-O@NC ball-in-ball hollow structure for highly efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting

Electrochemical water splitting using hollow and defect-rich catalysts has emerged as a promising strategy for efficient hydrogen production. However, the rational design and controllable synthesis of such catalysts with intricate morphology and composition present significant challenges. Herein, we propose a template-engaged approach to fabricate a novel ball-in-ball hollow structure of Co-P-O@N-doped carbon with abundant oxygen vacancies. The synthesis process involves the preparation of uniform cobalt-glycerate (Co-gly) polymer microspheres as precursors, followed by surface coating with ZIF-67 layer, adjustable chemical etching by phytic acid, and controllable pyrolysis at high temperature. The resulting ball-in-ball structure offers a large number of accessible active sites and high redox reaction centers, facilitating efficient charge transport, mass transfer, and gas evolution, which are beneficial for the acceleration of electrocatalytic reaction. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the incorporation of oxygen and the presence of Co-P dangling bonds in CoP significantly enhance the adsorption of oxygenated species, leading to improved intrinsic electroactivity at the single-site level. As a sequence, the titled catalyst exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability for water splitting in alkaline media. Notably, it only requires a low overpotential of 283 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction. This work may provide some new insights into the design of complex hollow structures of phosphides with abundant defects for energy conversion.

Tunable Synthesis of Metal-Rich and Phosphorus-Rich Nickel Phosphides and Their Comparative Evaluation as Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Flexible synthetic routes to crystalline metal-rich to phosphorus-rich nickel phosphides are highly desired for comparable electrocatalytic HER studies. This report details solvent-free, direct, and tin-flux-assisted synthesis of five different nickel phosphides from NiCl₂ and phosphorus at moderate temperatures (500 °C). Direct reactions are thermodynamically driven via PCl₃ formation and tuned through reaction stoichiometry to produce crystalline Ni-P materials from metal-rich (Ni₂P, Ni₅P₄) to phosphorus-rich (cubic NiP₂) compositions. A tin flux in NiCl₂/P reactions allows access to monoclinic NiP₂ and NiP₃. Intermediates in tin flux reactions were isolated to help identify phosphorus-rich Ni-P formation mechanisms. These crystalline micrometer-sized nickel phosphide powders were affixed to carbon-wax electrodes and investigated as HER electrocatalysts in acidic electrolyte. All nickel phosphides show moderate HER activity in a potential range of -160 to -260 mV to achieve current densities of 10 mA/cm² ordered as c-NiP₂ ≥ Ni₅P₄ > NiP₃ > m-NiP₂ > Ni₂P, with NiP₃ activity showing some particle size influence. Phosphorus-rich c/m-NiP₂ appears most stable under acidic conditions during extended reactions. The HER activity of these different nickel phosphides appears influenced by a combination of factors such as particle size, phosphorus content, polyphosphide anions, and surface charge.

Vertically growing nanowall-like N-doped NiP/NF electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Developing low-cost, high-performance and corrosion-resistant catalysts for water splitting is anticipated, but it will also be a big challenge. In this study, nanowall-like N-Ni₅P₄/Ni₂P/NF (N-NiP/NF) was synthesized by a simple two-step method involving hydrothermal treatment and phosphorylation. The catalyst has good catalytic activity for the OER, and only 160 mV is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH, which is even better than RuO₂, with good corrosion resistance. In addition, N-Co₂P/Ni₂P/NF (N-CoP/NF) was synthesized by the same method with good electrocatalytic properties and good conductivity towards the HER. N-NiP/NF was used as the anode and N-CoP/NF was used as the cathode to form the N-NiP//N-CoP double electrode system, which showed excellent electrolytic performance for water splitting, requiring only 1.48 V to reach 10 mA cm^-2. This is mainly due to the strong electronegativity of N that makes the N doping induce the electron transfer process, which results in a high catalytic activity of the adjacent transition metal atoms and thus promotes the electrolysis of water, as well as the unique vertical nanowall-like structure, which gives the material a large surface area and accessibility to active sites, facilitating the adsorption of water molecules and catalytic reactions. In addition, the unique structure favors the diffusion of water molecules and the release of gaseous products, ensuring close contact between the catalyst and the electroactive material. This simple non-metallic N doping strategy provides a new way to produce efficient non-precious metal catalysts.

Recent Advances in Multimetal and Doped Transition-Metal Phosphides for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction at Different pH values

Hydrogen is a fuel with a potentially zero-carbon footprint viewed as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. It can be produced in a large scale via electrochemical water splitting using electricity derived from renewable sources, but this would require highly active, inexpensive, and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to replace the Pt benchmark. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are potential Pt replacements owing to their generally high activity as well as versatility as HER catalysts for different pH media. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of TMP HER electrocatalysts, focusing on the strategies that have been recently explored to tune the activity in acidic, neutral, and basic media. These strategies are the doping of TMPs with metal and nonmetal elements, fabrication of multimetallic phosphide phases, and construction of multicomponent heterostructures comprising TMPs and another component such as a different TMP or a metal oxide/hydroxide. The synthetic methods utilized to design the catalysts are also presented. Finally, the challenges still remaining and future research directions are discussed.
