The Effect of Selenium-Based Ligands on Tungsten Acetylene Complexes

Bioinspired tungsten acetylene complexes containing pyridine-2-selenolato (PySe) or 6-methyl-pyridine-2-selenolato (6-MePySe) ligands were synthesized. 77Se NMR spectroscopy allowed for an assessment of the resonance structures in the pyridine-2-selenolato ligands and the rationalization of chemoselectivity observed in regard to 1,2 migratory insertion of HC≡CH. [W(CO)(C2H2)(CHCH-PySe)(PySe)] is formed exclusively via insertion of HC≡CH into the W-N bond, while the use of bulkier 6-MePySe allows for the isolation of [W(CO)(C2H2)(6-MePySe)2], which only partially reacts with excess HC≡CH to give [W(CO)(C2H2)(CHCH-6-MePySe)(6-MePySe)]. Oxidation of [W(CO)(C2H2)(6-MePySe)2] with pyridine-N-oxide gave the tungsten(IV) complex [WO(C2H2)(6-MePySe)2]. Complexes [W(CO)(C2H2)(6-MePySe)2] and [WO(C2H2)(6-MePySe)2] react with trimethyl phosphine to carbyne complex [W(CO)(CCH2PMe3)(PMe3)2(6-MePySe)]Cl and alkylidene complex [WO(CHCHPMe3)(PMe3)2(6-MePySe)]Cl, respectively. The addition of substituted alkynes to [W(CO)3(PySe)2] via thermal decarbonylation gave complexes [W(CO)(MeC≡CMe)(PySe)2] and [W(CO)(HC≡Ct-Bu)(PySe)2], respectively. The here presented complexes are relevant for the modeling of the active site of acetylene hydratase from Pelobacter acetylenicus, in which a tungsten atom is enclosed in a sulfur-rich coordination sphere. A recently published theoretical study concluded that the exchange of sulfur for selenium would increase the activity of the enzyme. Our findings contrast this claim as comparative analysis concludes negligible structural and electronic differences between the selenium-based and previously published sulfur-based complexes.

Synthesis and reactivity of 9,10-bis(4-trimethylsilylethynylbuta-1,3-diynyl)anthracene derived chromophores

9,10-Bis(4-trimethylsilylethynylbutadiynyl)anthracene is readily availabe from the reaction of anthraquinone and LiCCCCSiMe₃ followed by reduction with Sn(II) and serves as a convenient building block via desilylation and palladium-mediated C-C coupling processes for the construction of further butadiynylanthracenes terminated by metal complexes, arenes, haloarenes and alkynyl functionalities.

Organometallic Chemistry of Transition Metal Alkylidyne Complexes Centered at Metathesis Reactions

Transition metals form a variety of alkylidyne complexes with either a d⁰ metal center (high-valent) or a non-d⁰ metal center (low-valent). One of the most interesting properties of alkylidyne complexes is that they can undergo or mediate metathesis reactions. The most well-studied metathesis reactions are alkyne metathesis involving high-valent alkylidynes. High-valent alkylidynes can also undergo metathesis reactions with heterotriple bonded species such as N≡CR, P≡CR, and N≡NR⁺. Metathesis reactions involving low-valent alkylidynes are less known. Highly efficient alkyne metathesis catalysts have been developed based on Mo(VI) and W(VI) alkylidynes. Catalytic cross-metathesis of nitriles with alkynes has also been achieved with M(VI) (M = W, Mo) alkylidyne or nitrido complexes. The metathesis activity of alkylidyne complexes is sensitively dependent on metals, supporting ligands and substituents of alkylidynes. Beyond metathesis, metal alkylidynes can also promote other reactions including alkyne polymerization. The remaining shortcomings and opportunities in the field are assessed.

Transition Metal Carbide Complexes

Carbide complexes remain a rare class of molecules. Their paucity does not reflect exceptional instability but is rather due to the generally narrow scope of synthetic procedures for constructing carbide complexes. The preparation of carbide complexes typically revolves around generating L_nM-CE_x fragments, followed by cleavage of the C-E bonds of the coordinated carbon-based ligands (the alternative being direct C atom transfer). Prime examples involve deoxygenation of carbonyl ligands and deprotonation of methyl ligands, but several other p-block fragments can be cleaved off to afford carbide ligands. This Review outlines synthetic strategies toward terminal carbide complexes, bridging carbide complexes, as well as carbide-carbonyl cluster complexes. It then surveys the reactivity of carbide complexes, covering stoichiometric reactions where the carbide ligands act as C₁ reagents, engage in cross-coupling reactions, and enact Fischer-Tropsch-like chemistry; in addition, we discuss carbide complexes in the context of catalysis. Finally, we examine spectroscopic features of carbide complexes, which helps to establish the presence of the carbide functionality and address its electronic structure.

Symmetric and non-symmetric anthracen-diyl bis(alkylidynes)

Three examples of 9-bromo-10-(alkylidynyl)anthracenes, [W{CC(C₆H₄)₂CBr}(CO)₂(L)] (L = hydrotris(dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp*, hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp, hydrotris(2-mercapto-N-methylimidazol-1-yl)borate Tm) were prepared via modified Fischer-Mayr acyl oxide-abstraction protocols. With a sufficiently bulky ancillary ligand (L = Tp*) the aryl bromide is ammenable to cross-coupling reactions that enable more elaborate derivatives to be prepared. These including symmetric bis(alkylidynyl)anthracenes as well as non-palindromic examples bearing disparate metals and/or co-ligands. In contrast, these couplings fail for smaller ligands (L = Tp, Tm) where it was found that Pd⁰ or Pt⁰ were instead able to coordinate across two WC bonds to give trimetallic bow-tie complexes, [W₂M{μ-CC(C₆H₄)₂CBr}₂(CO)₄(L)₂] (M = Pd, Pt; L = Tp, Tm).

Heterocyclic arsinocarbynes via tandem transmetallation

Gold(i)-catalysed tandem transmetallation (Sn→Au→As) of the stannylcarbyne [W(≡CSnⁿBu₃)(CO)₂(Tp*)] (Tp* = hydrotris-(dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) with haloarsines gives direct access to a range of novel arsinocarbyne complexes, L_nM≡CAsR₂, including unusual heterocyclic phenarsazininyl and arsolyl examples.
