Electronic structures and bonding of the actinide halides An(TRENTIPS)X (An = Th-Pu; X = F-I): a theoretical perspective

High Coordination Numbers of Actinides (An) in AnC13+ Rings (An = Th and U)

An intriguingly high abundance of both ThC13+ and UC13+ cluster cations was observed in a previous mass spectrometry experiment; however, the structural identification of these cations has not yet been completed. In this study, we determined the lowest lying structures of ThC13+ and UC13+ clusters using an unbiased structural search method. The 13-coordinate planar ring configuration was the most stable for both ThC13+ and UC13+ cluster cations. The C-An bonds in ThC13+ and UC13+ show a small degree of covalency, originating from the overlap of the s, d, and f orbitals of the An atoms with C 2p orbitals of both π and σ characteristics. The infrared and electronic absorption spectra of the most favorable planar ring configurations were theoretically simulated to facilitate the identification of the molecular structures in future experiments. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the experimental mass spectra.

Actinide inverse trans influence versus cooperative pushing from below and multi-center bonding

Actinide-ligand bonds with high multiplicities remain poorly understood. Decades ago, an effect known as 6p pushing from below (PFB) was proposed to enhance actinide covalency. A related effect-also poorly understood-is inverse trans influence (ITI). The present computational study of actinide-ligand covalent interactions with high bond multiplicities quantifies the energetic contributions from PFB and identifies a hitherto overlooked fourth bonding interaction for 2nd-row ligands in the studied organometallic systems. The latter are best described by a terminal O/N ligand exhibiting quadruple bonding interactions with the actinide. The 4th interaction may be characterized as a multi-center or charge-shift bond involving the trans ligand. It is shown in this work that the 4th bonding interaction is a manifestation of ITI, assisted by PFB, and provides a long-sought missing piece in the understanding of actinide chemistry.

Structural and Bonding Analysis in Monomeric Actinide(IV) Oxalate from Th(IV) to Pu(IV): Comparison with the An(IV) Nitrate Series

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) structures and Raman spectra of a series of new isomorphous molecular An(IV)-oxalate compounds (Th, U, Np, and Pu) are reported. These complexes are crystallized with cobalt(III) hexamine ([Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺) as the counter cations, [Co(NH₃)₆]₂[An(C₂O₄)₅]·4H₂O, revealing five bidentate nonbridging oxalate ligands in the first coordination sphere (CN = 10). The nonbridging oxalate is rather uncommon for An(IV)-oxalate systems, which are widely characterized as polymeric compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to examine the bonding between An(IV) cations and oxalate ligands. For comparison, we also report results obtained for the An(IV)-hexanitrate series, [(C₂H₅)₄N]₂[An(NO₃)₆] (with An = Th, U, Np, Pu, and Ce), which consists of O-donor ligands as well but with a larger coordination number (CN = 12). The bonding analysis confirms that the actinide-oxygen bond is predominantly ionic with a minor increase in covalency from Th to U and slight variations from U to Pu. Further comparison showed that the charge transfer increases slightly when increasing the number of anions in the coordination sphere (C₂O₄^2-: CN = 10; NO₃^-: CN = 12), but covalent effects as indicated by the amount of internuclear electron density accumulation are small and similar for oxalate and nitrate.

A terminal neptunium(V)-mono(oxo) complex

Neptunium was the first actinide element to be artificially synthesized, yet, compared with its more famous neighbours uranium and plutonium, is less conspicuously studied. Most neptunium chemistry involves the neptunyl di(oxo)-motif, and transuranic compounds with one metal-ligand multiple bond are rare, being found only in extended-structure oxide, fluoride or oxyhalide materials. These combinations stabilize the required high oxidation states, which are otherwise challenging to realize for transuranic ions. Here we report the synthesis, isolation and characterization of a stable molecular neptunium(V)-mono(oxo) triamidoamine complex. We describe a strong Np≡O triple bond with dominant 5f-orbital contributions and σ_u > π_u energy ordering, akin to terminal uranium-nitrides and di(oxo)-actinyls, but not the uranium-mono(oxo) triple bonds or other actinide multiple bonds reported so far. This work demonstrates that molecular high-oxidation-state transuranic complexes with a single metal-ligand bond can be stabilized and studied in isolation.

Ligands enhanced the Ac[triple bond, length as m-dash]Ac triple bond

The multiple bonds between actinide atoms and their derivatives are computationally investigated extensively and compounds with an unsupported actinide-actinide bond, especially in low oxidation states, have attracted great attention. Herein, high level relativistic quantum chemical methods are used to probe the Ac-Ac bonding in compounds with a general formula LAcAcL (L = AsH3, PH3, NH3, H, CO, NO) at both scalar and spin-orbit coupling relativistic levels. H3AsAcAcAsH3, H3PAcAcPH3 and OCAcAcCO compounds show a type of zero valence Ac[triple bond, length as m-dash]Ac triple bond with a 1σ2g1π4u configuration, and H3AsAcAcAsH3 has been found to have the shortest Ac-Ac bond length of 3.012 Å reported so far. The Ac2 unit is very sensitive to the σ donor ligands and can form triple, double and even single bonds when suitable ligands are introduced, up to 3.652 Å with an Ac-Ac single bond in H3NAcAcNH3.
