Yolk-shell (Cu,Zn)Fe2O4 ferrite nano-microspheres with highly selective triethylamine gas-sensing properties

The Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Structure of Bi x -Sn1-x O2 Used for Ultrasensitive Detection of Butanone under UV Irradiation

Recent studies have identified butanone as a promising biomarker in the breath of lung cancer patients, yet the understanding of its gas-sensing properties remains limited. A key challenge has been to enhance the gas-sensing performance of materials toward butanone, particularly under ultraviolet light exposure. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional composite material composed of SnO2 incorporated with Bi2O3 using facile hydrothermal and impregnation precipitation methods. Detailed physical and chemical characterizations were performed to assess the properties of the developed material. Upon activation with ultraviolet light, our composite exhibited exceptionally high sensitivity to butanone. Remarkably, the butanone response was nearly 3 times greater for the Bi2O3-loaded SnO2 composite than for pristine SnO2, achieving a response value of 70. This substantial improvement is due to the synergistic effect of the material's distinctive three-dimensional architecture and the presence of Bi2O3, which significantly augmented the gas-sensing capability of butanone. To elucidate the underlying gas-sensing mechanism, we conducted first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT). The computational analysis revealed that the Bi2O3-containing system possesses superior adsorption energy for butanone. Ultimately, our findings suggest that the Bi-SnO2 composite holds great promise as an optimal sensing material for the detection of butanone under ultraviolet illumination.

Manganese doped two-dimensional zinc ferrite thin films as chemiresistive trimethylamine gas sensors

Trimethylamine (TMA) is highly toxic and can have lethal effects on living organisms. Detecting the presence of TMA in air is very important because, if the TMA level exceeds the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) limit, it may harm the environment and endanger human life. Doping is an appropriate flexible way to change the electrical structures of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) and improve their ability to detect toxic gases. In this work, Mn-doped zinc ferrite thin film nanorods with agglomerated morphology were fabricated by a spray pyrolysis technique. For the first time, a comprehensive investigation was done on the gas sensing capabilities of Mn-doped ZnFe2O4 thin films. The findings showed that ZFM1 had the best gas sensing characteristics, with high sensitivity (S = 6.24), good selectivity, and quick recovery, towards 10 ppm TMA at ambient temperature. The alternate Mn-ZF sites are responsible for the rapid recovery because they can significantly increase the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the ZF crystal. 0.1 Mn doped ZnFe2O4 (ZFM1) thin film exhibits greatly enhanced gas sensing properties towards TMA, because of its high surface-to-volume ratio and rough surface with a small nanorod structure. The sensor's response to 10 ppm TMA was measured 13 weeks later for stability testing. The stability test results show that the coated ZFM1 film works well as a TMA gas sensor. This work shows that ZF thin films are effective in detecting TMA in the atmosphere.

PtPd NPs-functionalized metal-organic framework-derived α-Fe2O3 porous spindles for efficient low-temperature detection of triethylamine

In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have gradually become ideal materials for gas sensors due to their controllable composition, diverse structures and open metal sites. In this research, a simplified hydrothermal method was applied to successfully prepare MOF-derived α-Fe2O3 spindles, and an in situ reduction method was then utilized to deposit Pt, Pd and PtPd bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the α-Fe2O3 spindles. The effects of noble metals Pt, Pd and PtPd on the gas-sensing properties of Fe2O3 were systematically examined. The PtPd/α-Fe2O3 sensor has enhanced gas-sensing performance for triethylamine (TEA), especially at PtPd content of 1.5 wt% and mass ratio of Pt : Pd = 90 : 10, where the response of the sensor to 100 ppm TEA at a lower temperature of 150 °C is 442, which is 34 times higher than that of the original α-Fe2O3 (response of 13). Additionally, the sensor demonstrated improved response/recovery properties and very respectable selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability within 30 days and lower detection limit (500 ppb) at 150 °C. Combining the results of XPS and O2-TPD, the enhanced gas-sensing properties of PtPd bimetallic-modified α-Fe2O3 over monometallic (Pt or Pd) modified α-Fe2O3 were analyzed, which can be attributed to the chemical and electronic sensitization of noble metals and the synergistic effect of the PtPd bimetallic NPs, resulting in more surface defects and enhanced oxygen adsorption capacity of the sensing material. This work provided an effective gas-sensing material for the low-temperature detection and analysis of triethylamine gas.

Recent Progress in Spinel Ferrite (MFe2O4) Chemiresistive Based Gas Sensors

Gas-sensing technology has gained significant attention in recent years due to the increasing concern for environmental safety and human health caused by reactive gases. In particular, spinel ferrite (MFe2O4), a metal oxide semiconductor with a spinel structure, has emerged as a promising material for gas-sensing applications. This review article aims to provide an overview of the latest developments in spinel-ferrite-based gas sensors. It begins by discussing the gas-sensing mechanism of spinel ferrite sensors, which involves the interaction between the target gas molecules and the surface of the sensor material. The unique properties of spinel ferrite, such as its high surface area, tunable bandgap, and excellent stability, contribute to its gas-sensing capabilities. The article then delves into recent advancements in gas sensors based on spinel ferrite, focusing on various aspects such as microstructures, element doping, and heterostructure materials. The microstructure of spinel ferrite can be tailored to enhance the gas-sensing performance by controlling factors such as the grain size, porosity, and surface area. Element doping, such as incorporating transition metal ions, can further enhance the gas-sensing properties by modifying the electronic structure and surface chemistry of the sensor material. Additionally, the integration of spinel ferrite with other semiconductors in heterostructure configurations has shown potential for improving the selectivity and overall sensing performance. Furthermore, the article suggests that the combination of spinel ferrite and semiconductors can enhance the selectivity, stability, and sensing performance of gas sensors at room or low temperatures. This is particularly important for practical applications where real-time and accurate gas detection is crucial. In conclusion, this review highlights the potential of spinel-ferrite-based gas sensors and provides insights into the latest advancements in this field. The combination of spinel ferrite with other materials and the optimization of sensor parameters offer opportunities for the development of highly efficient and reliable gas-sensing devices for early detection and warning systems.

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Sensors for Triethylamine Detection: Sensing Performance and Improvements

Triethylamine (TEA) is an organic compound that is commonly used in industries, but its volatile, inflammable, corrosive, and toxic nature leads to explosions and tissue damage. A sensitive, accurate, and in situ monitoring of TEA is of great significance to production safety and human health. Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) are widely used as gas sensors for volatile organic compounds due to their high bandgap and unique microstructure. This review aims to provide insights into the further development of MOSs by generalizing existing MOSs for TEA detection and measures to improve their sensing performance. This review starts by proposing the basic gas-sensing characteristics of the sensor and two typical TEA sensing mechanisms. Then, recent developments to improve the sensing performance of TEA sensors are summarized from different aspects, such as the optimization of material morphology, the incorporation of other materials (metal elements, conducting polymers, etc.), the development of new materials (graphene, TMDs, etc.), the application of advanced fabrication devices, and the introduction of external stimulation. Finally, this review concludes with prospects for using the aforementioned methods in the fabrication of high-performance TEA gas sensors, as well as highlighting the significance and research challenges in this emerging field.

Semiconductor Gas Sensor for Triethylamine Detection

With the demanding detection of unique toxic gas, semiconductor gas sensors have attracted tremendous attention due to their intriguing features, such as, high sensitivity, online detection, portability, ease of use, and low cost. Triethylamine, a typical gas of volatile organic compounds, is an important raw material for industrial development, but it is also a hazard to human health. This review presents a concise compilation of the advances in triethylamine detection based on chemiresistive sensors. Specifically, the testing system and sensing parameters are described in detail. Besides, the sensing mechanism with characterizing tactics is analyzed. The research status based on various chemiresistive sensors is also surveyed. Finally, the conclusion and challenges, as well as some perspectives toward this area, are presented.

Hierarchical hollow BiFeO3 microcubes with enhanced acetone gas sensing performance

Metal oxide-based gas sensors have drawn tremendous research interests owing to their various compositions and selective and improved performance. However, the development of a targeted metal oxide with controlled microstructures via a facile preparation procedure is still a challenge. In this work, hierarchical BiFeO3 nano-microstructures are successfully developed through the post-modification of Bi3+ encapsulation with Fe-based Prussian blue microcubes followed by a sequential annealing strategy. The microstructures of the hierarchical BiFeO3 architectures can be effectively modulated by tuning various thermolysis temperatures. Among them, the hierarchical hollow BiFeO3 microcubes assembled from ultrathin nanosheets exhibit optimum acetone selective sensing performances with a gas response value (Ra/Rg) of 5.2 at 240 °C, rapid response/recovery times (10 s/9 s), and excellent long-term stability (for at least 30 days). The high and reproducible acetone-sensing properties are mainly attributed to the unique interior loose and porous structures with good permeability. The corresponding acetone sensing mechanism relying on the microstructure of BiFeO3 was also discussed. This work highlights the key role of morphological evolution in the fabrication of multi-functional multimetal oxides, and thus offers new opportunities for the rational design of novel gas sensing materials.
