Covalency-Driven Differences in the Hydrogenation Chemistry of Lanthanide- and Actinide-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs

The electronic organization of Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) allows them to activate strong bonds in mechanisms that are usually free of redox events at the Lewis acidic site. The unique 6d/5f manifold of uranium could serve as an interesting FLP acceptor site, but to date FLP-like catalysis with actinide ions is unknown. In this paper, the catalytic, FLP-like hydrogenation reactivity of trivalent uranium complexes is explored in the presence of base-stabilized silylenes. Comparison to isoelectronic, isostructural lanthanide and thorium complexes lends insight into the electronic factors governing dihydrogen activation. Mechanistic studies of the uranium- and lanthanide-catalyzed hydrogenations are presented, including discussion of likely intermediates. Computational modeling of the f-element complexes, combined with experimental comparison to p-block Lewis acids, elucidates the relevance of steric hindrance to productive reactivity with dihydrogen. Consideration of the complete experimental and theoretical evidence provides a clear picture of the electronic and steric factors governing dihydrogen activation by these FLPs.

Progress in Nonaqueous Molecular Uranium Chemistry: Where to Next?

There is long-standing interest in nonaqueous uranium chemistry because of fundamental questions about uranium's variable chemical bonding and the similarities of this pseudo-Group 6 element to its congener d-block elements molybdenum and tungsten. To provide historical context, with reference to a conference presentation slide presented around 1988 that advanced a defining collection of top targets, and the challenge, for synthetic actinide chemistry to realize in isolable complexes under normal experimental conditions, this Viewpoint surveys progress against those targets, including (i) CO and related π-acid ligand complexes, (ii) alkylidenes, carbynes, and carbidos, (iii) imidos and terminal nitrides, (iv) homoleptic polyalkyls, -alkoxides, and -aryloxides, (v) uranium-uranium bonds, and (vi) examples of topics that can be regarded as branching out in parallel from the leading targets. Having summarized advances from the past four decades, opportunities to build on that progress, and hence possible future directions for the field, are highlighted. The wealth and diversity of uranium chemistry that is described emphasizes the importance of ligand-metal complementarity in developing exciting new chemistry that builds our knowledge and understanding of elements in a relativistic regime.

Arene-, Chlorido-, and Imido-Uranium Bis- and Tris(boryloxide) Complexes

We introduce the boryloxide ligand {(HCNDipp)2BO}- (NBODipp, Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl) to actinide chemistry. Protonolysis of [U{N(SiMe3)2}3] with 3 equiv of NBODippH produced the uranium(III) tris(boryloxide) complex [U(NBODipp)3] (1). In contrast, treatment of UCl4 with 3 equiv of NBODippK in THF at room temperature or reflux conditions produced only [U(NBODipp)2(Cl)2(THF)2] (2) with 1 equiv of NBODippK remaining unreacted. However, refluxing the mixture of 2 and unreacted NBODippK in toluene instead of THF afforded the target complex [U(NBODipp)3(Cl)(THF)] (3). Two-electron oxidation of 1 with AdN3 (Ad = 1-adamantyl) afforded the uranium(V)-imido complex [U(NBODipp)3(NAd)] (4). The solid-state structure of 1 reveals a uranium-arene bonding motif, and structural, spectroscopic, and DFT calculations all suggest modest uranium-arene δ-back-bonding with approximately equal donation into the arene π4 and π5 δ-symmetry π* molecular orbitals. Complex 4 exhibits a short uranium(V)-imido distance, and computational modeling enabled its electronic structure to be compared to related uranium-imido and uranium-oxo complexes, revealing a substantial 5f-orbital crystal field splitting and extensive mixing of 5f |ml,ms⟩ states and mj projections. Complexes 1-4 have been variously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 1H NMR, IR, UV/vis/NIR, and EPR spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, elemental analysis, and CONDON, F-shell, DFT, NLMO, and QTAIM crystal field and quantum chemical calculations.

Bis(acyl)phosphide Complexes of U(III)/U(IV): A Case of a Hidden Redox-Active Ligand

The recently reported tris(bis(2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl)-phosphide)uranium (UIII(trippBAP)3, 2) complex (Inorg. Chem. 2022, 61 (32), 12508-12517) demonstrated a silent 31P NMR spectrum. This complex was described as a U(III) complex with an organic radical ligand fragment. Moreover, the EPR spectrum of 2 was indicative of an organic radical in the ligand framework complexed to uranium, in contrast to that of UIV(mesBAP)4, 1. Herein, with the help of relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electronic structures of 1, 2, and U(mesBAP)3 (4) are examined in an effort to understand the unusual 31P NMR spectrum of 2. Results indicate the reduction of the carbonyl bonds and delocalization of the electrons over the ligands, indicative of U → L backbonding. Additionally, the reduced acyl carbons are found to exist as ketyl radicals [O═C• -] that are responsible for the silent 31P NMR spectra of 2. These findings demonstrate the redox noninnocent nature of BAP- in 2 and 4, causing uranium to exist in a formal oxidation state of +4.

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

Uranium versus Thorium: A Case Study on a Base-Free Terminal Uranium Imido Metallocene

The structure of and bonding in two base-free terminal actinide imido metallocenes, [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2An═N(p-tolyl) (An = U (1), Th (1')) are compared and connected to their individual reactivity. While structurally rather similar, the U(IV) derivative 1 is slightly more sterically crowded. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) studies imply that the 5f orbital contribution to the bonding within the individual actinide imido An═N(p-tolyl) moieties is significantly larger for 1 than for 1', which makes the bonds between the [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U2+ and [(p-tolyl)N]2- fragments more covalent. Therefore, steric and electronic factors impact the reactivity of these imido complexes. For example, complex 1 is inert toward internal alkynes, but it readily forms Lewis base adducts [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(L) (L = OPMe3 (6), dmap (9), PhCN (14), and 2,6-Me2PhNC (17)) with Me3PO, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap), nitrile, PhCN, or isonitrile 2,6-Me2PhNC. It may also react as a nucleophile or undergo a [2 + 2] cycloaddition with CS2, isothiocyanates, thio-ketones, ketones, lactides, and acyl nitriles, forming the four- or five-membered metallaheteroacycles, terminal sulfido, or oxido complexes, and cyanide amidate complexes, respectively. In contrast, after the addition of aldehyde p-tolylCHO, the tetranuclear complex [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]4[OCH(p-tolyl)CH(p-tolyl)O]2U4O4 (10) is isolated. However, while 1 is unreactive toward dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), an equilibrium exists in benzene solution between N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC), 1, and the four-membered metallaheterocycle [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(═NiPr)N(iPr)] (12). Furthermore, 1 may also engage in single- and two-electron transfer processes. It is singly oxidized by Ph3CN3, CuI, Ph2S2, and Ph2Se2, yielding the uranium(V) imido complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(X) (X = N3 (20), I (22), PhS (23), and PhSe (24)), or is doubly oxidized by organic azides (RN3) and 9-diazofluorene, forming the uranium(VI) bis-imido metallocenes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(=NR) (R = p-tolyl (18), mesityl (19)) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U=N(p-tolyl)[=NN=(9-C13H8)] (21), respectively.

Comparison of the structural, electrochemical, and spectroscopic properties of two cryptates of trivalent uranium

We describe a study of the influence of cryptand denticity on the structural, electronic, and electrochemical properties of UIII-containing cryptates. Two cryptands (2.2.2 and 2.2.1) are reported. The cryptand with the smaller denticity leads to negative electrochemical potentials and shorter bond lengths that are consistent with a better fit for UIII than the larger cryptand. These studies provide insight into the rational design of cryptand-based ligands for trivalent uranium.

Synthesis and Structure of [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2Th(bipy) and Its Reactivity toward Small Molecules

Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

N-Aryloxide-Amidinate Thorium Complexes

An N-aryloxide-amidine ligand (1), [ONNO] ligand, integrating phenoxide (PhO-) and amidine ligands through methylene linkers, was employed in actinide chemistry. Upon reaction of the deprotonated ligand with ThCl4(DME)2 in ether, the corresponding dimer complex 2 was obtained. Upon treatment of 2 with KCp* (Cp* = Cp(Me)5) in tetrahydrofuran, the corresponding {[ONNO]ThIVCp*(LiCl)}2 (4) was obtained. In complex 2, the two ArO- arms bonded from the same ligand to different ThIV centers. In contrast, both ArO- arms coordinated to the same metal center in 4. Notably, when a mixture of 2 and bipyridine was treated with one or two equiv of KC8, the [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl•̅ radical dimer complex (5) and [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl2- dianionic dimer species (6) were obtained, respectively.

Perplexing EPR Signals from 5f36d1 U(II) Complexes

Metal complexes with unpaired electrons in orbitals of different angular momentum quantum numbers (e.g., f and d orbitals) are unusual and opportunities to study the interactions among these electrons are rare. X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data were collected at <10 and 77 K on 10 U(II) complexes with 5f36d1 electron configurations and on some analogous Ce(II), Pr(II), and Nd(II) complexes with 4fn5d1 electron configurations. The U(II) compounds unexpectedly display similar two-line axial signals with g|| = 2.04 and g⊥ = 2.00 at 77 K. In contrast, U(II) complexes with 5f4 configurations are EPR-silent. Unlike U(II), the congenic 4f35d1 Nd(II) complex is EPR-silent. The Ce(II) complex with a 4f15d1 configuration is also EPR-silent, but a signal is observed for the Pr(II) complex, which has a 4f25d1 configuration. Whether or not an EPR signal is expected for these complexes depends on the coupling between f and d electrons. Since the coupling in U(II) systems is expected to be sufficiently strong to preclude an EPR signal from compounds with a 5f36d1 configuration, the results are viewed as unexplained phenomena. However, they do show that 5f36d1 U(II) samples can be differentiated from 5f4 U(II) complexes by EPR spectroscopy.

Reactivity of a Lewis base-supported uranium terminal imido metallocene towards small molecules

The Lewis base-supported uranium terminal imido metallocene [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(dmap) (1) readily reacts with various small molecules such as internal alkynes, isothiocyanates, thioketones, amidates, organic nitriles and imines, chlorosilanes, copper iodide, diphenyl disulfide, organic azides and diazoalkane derivatives. For example, treatment of 1 with PhCCCCPh and PhNCS forms metallaheterocycles originating from a [2 + 2] cycloaddition to yield [η5-1-(p-tolyl)NC(Ph)CHCC(Ph)CH2Si(Me)2-2,4-(Me3Si)2C5H2][η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]U (2) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(NPh)S](dmap) (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with the thioketone Ph2CS forms the known uranium sulfido complex [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2US(dmap) (4), which reacts with a second molecule of Ph2CS to give the disulfido compound [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U(S2CPh2) (5). The imido moiety also promotes deprotonation reactions as illustrated in the reactions with the amide PhCONH(p-tolyl), the nitrile PhCH2CN and the imine (p-tolyl)2CNH to form the bis-amidate [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[OC(Ph)N(p-tolyl)]2 (7), and the iminato complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(CH2Ph)NH](NCCHPh) (8) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[NH(p-tolyl)][NC(p-tolyl)2] (9), respectively. Addition of PhSiH2Cl to 1 yields [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U(Cl)[N(p-tolyl)SiH2Ph] (10). In contrast, the uranium(V) imido complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(I) (11) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(SPh) (12), may be isolated upon addition of CuI or Ph2S2 to 1, respectively. Uranium(VI) bis-imido metallocenes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(NR) (R = p-tolyl (13), mesityl (14)) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)[NN(9-C13H8)] (15) are accessible from 1 on exposure to RN3 (R = p-tolyl, mesityl) and 9-diazofluorene, respectively. Complexes 2, 3, 5, and 7-15 were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and, in addition, compounds 2, 3, 5, and 7-13 were structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Divergent Stabilities of Tetravalent Cerium, Uranium, and Neptunium Imidophosphorane Complexes

The study of the redox chemistry of mid-actinides (U-Pu) has historically relied on cerium as a model, due to the accessibility of trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states for these ions. Recently, dramatic shifts of lanthanide 4+/3+ non-aqueous redox couples have been established within a homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand framework. Herein we extend the chemistry of the imidophosphorane ligand (NPC=[N=Pt Bu(pyrr)2 ]- ; pyrr=pyrrolidinyl) to tetrahomoleptic NPC complexes of neptunium and cerium (1-M, 2-M, M=Np, Ce) and present comparative structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of these complexes. Large cathodic shifts in the M4+/3+ (M=Ce, U, Np) couples underpin the stabilization of higher metal oxidation states owing to the strongly donating nature of the NPC ligands, providing access to the U5+/4+ , U6+/5+ , and to an unprecedented, well-behaved Np5+/4+ redox couple. The differences in the chemical redox properties of the U vs. Ce and Np complexes are rationalized based on their redox potentials, degree of structural rearrangement upon reduction/oxidation, relative molecular orbital energies, and orbital composition analyses employing density functional theory.

A Comprehensive Study Concerning the Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Terminal Uranium Oxido, Sulfido, and Selenido Metallocenes

Terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes were synthesized, and their reactivity was comprehensively studied. Heating of an equimolar mixture of [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂UMe₂ (2) and [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U(NH-p-tolyl)₂ (3) in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap) in refluxing toluene forms [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (4), which is a useful precursor for the preparation of the terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═E(dmap) (E = O (5), S (6), Se (7)) employing a cycloaddition-elimination methodology with Ph₂C═E (E = O, S) or (p-MeOPh)₂CSe, respectively. Metallocenes 5-7 are inert toward alkynes, but they act as nucleophiles in the presence of alkylsilyl halides. The oxido and sulfido metallocenes 5 and 6 undergo [2 + 2] cycloadditions with isothiocyanate PhNCS or CS₂, while the selenido derivative 7 does not. The experimental studies are complemented by density functional theory (DFT) computations.

A versatile strategy for the formation of hydride-bridged actinide-iridium multimetallics

Reaction of the potassium pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridate tris-hydride K[IrCp*H₃] with UCl₄ and ThCl₄(DME)₂ led to the complete replacement of the halide ligands to generate multimetallic complexes U{(μ-H)₃IrCp*}₄ (1) and Th{[(μ-H₂)(H)IrCp*]₂[(μ-H)₃IrCp*]₂} (2), respectively. These analogues feature a significant discrepancy in hydride bonding modes; 1 contains twelve bridging hydrides while 2 contains ten bridging hydrides and two terminal, Ir-bound hydrides. Use of a U(iii) starting material, UI₃(1,4-dioxane)_1.5, resulted in the octanuclear complex {U[(μ²-H₃)IrCp*]₂[(μ³-H₂)IrCp*]}₂ (3). Computational studies indicate significant bonding character between U/Th and Ir in 1 and 2, with f-orbital involvement in the singly-occupied molecular orbitals of the uranium species 1. In addition, these studies attribute the variation in hydride bonding between 1 and 2 to differences in dispersion effects.

Synthesis of Trimethyltriazacyclohexane (Me3tach) Sandwich Complexes of Uranium, Neptunium, and Plutonium Triiodides: (Me3tach)2AnI3

1,3,5-Trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (Me₃tach) readily complexes uranium triiodide to form (Me₃tach)₂UI₃. The complex is soluble in THF and arenes and can function as a source of UI₃ to form organometallic U(III) complexes. When dissolved in pyridine (py), (Me₃tach)₂UI₃ forms (Me₃tach)UI₃(py)₂. A related complex with the larger 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (Me₃tacn) ligand, namely (Me₃tacn)UI₃(THF), was synthesized for comparison. Since X-ray quality crystals of (Me₃tach)₂UI₃ can be synthesized in high yield even with small-scale reactions, the system is ideal for extension to transuranium elements. Accordingly, the neptunium and plutonium complexes (Me₃tach)₂NpI₃ and (Me₃tach)₂PuI₃ were synthesized in an analogous manner from NpI₃(THF)₄ and PuI₃(THF)₄, respectively.

Unconventional Pathways to Carbide Phase Synthesis via Thermal Decomposition of UI4(1,4-dioxane)2

UI₄(1,4-dioxane)₂ was subjected to laser-based heating─a method that enables localized, fast heating (T > 2000 °C) and rapid cooling under controlled conditions (scan rate, power, atmosphere, etc.)─to understand its thermal decomposition. A predictive computational thermodynamic technique estimated the decomposition temperature of UI₄(1,4-dioxane)₂ to uranium (U) metal to be 2236 °C, a temperature achievable under laser irradiation. Dictated by the presence of reactive, gaseous byproducts, the thermal decomposition of UI₄(1,4-dioxane)₂ under furnace conditions up to 600 °C revealed the formation of UO₂, UI_x, and U(C_1-xO_x)_y, while under laser irradiation, UI₄(1,4-dioxane)₂ decomposed to UO₂, U(C_1-xO_x)_y, UC_2-zO_z, and UC. Despite the fast dynamics associated with laser irradiation, the central uranium atom reacted with the thermal decomposition products of the ligand (1,4-dioxane = C₄H₈O₂) instead of producing pure U metal. The results highlight the potential to co-develop uranium precursors with specific irradiation procedures to advance nuclear materials research by finding new pathways to produce uranium carbide.

Uranyl Analogue Complexes—Current Progress and Synthetic Challenges

Uranyl ions, {UO2}n+ (n = 1, 2), display trans, strongly covalent, and chemically robust U-O multiple bonds, where 6d, 5f, and 6p orbitals play important roles. The synthesis of isoelectronic analogues of uranyl has been of interest for quite some time, mainly with the purpose of unveiling covalence and 5f-orbital participation in bonding. Significant advances have occurred in the last two decades, initially marked by the synthesis of uranium(VI) bis(imido) complexes, the first analogues with a {RNUNR}2+ core, later followed by the synthesis of unique trans-{EUO}2+ (E = S, Se) complexes, and recently highlighted by the synthesis of the first complexes featuring a linear {NUN} moiety. This review covers the synthesis, structure, bonding, and reactivity of uranium complexes containing a linear {EUE}n+ core (n = 0, 1, 2), isoelectronic to uranyl ions, {OUO}n+ (n = 1, 2), incorporating σ- and π-donating ligands that can engage in uranium–ligand multiple bonding, where oxygen may be replaced by heavier chalcogenido, imido, nitride, and carbene ligands, or by a transition metal. It focuses on synthetic methods of well-defined molecular uranium species in the condensed phase but also references gas-phase and low-temperature-matrix experiments, as well as computational studies that may lead to valuable insights.

Mineralogical Properties of a Refractory Tantalum-Niobium Slag and the Effect of Roasting on the Leaching of Uranium-Thorium

In order to realize sustainable development, it is beneficial to explore an appropriate process to recover the radionuclides contained in tantalum-niobium slag. By micro-mineralogical analysis and roasting experiments, the effect of uranium-thorium leaching from a refractory tantalum-niobium slag is investigated. The uranium and thorium content in the slag is 2.26 × 10³ mg/kg and 7.84 × 10³ mg/kg, which have large recovery value. As the surface area and pore size of the slag are very small, the leaching agent cannot fully penetrate the particles. Various methods of characterization are used to analyze the mineralogical properties of roasted slag at different temperatures. The leaching ratio of U-Th is 90.84% and 96.62% at the optimum roasting temperature of 500 °C, which are about 39% and 27% higher than original samples. The oxidants Fe³⁺, O₂ and Mn can also promote the conversion of insoluble U(IV) to soluble U(VI). Roasting reduces the content of organic C and S, thereby preventing reduction of U(VI), and increasing pore size as well as specific surface area also promote radionuclide leaching. Thus, the roasting method at 500 °C can destroy the surface wrapping structure of radionuclides, reduce the internal density of minerals, and improve uranium-thorium leaching ratio significantly. It is of great practical significance to reduce the radioactive hazard of waste tantalum-niobium slag and to strengthen the sustainable utilization of resources by suitable process improvement techniques.

Intrinsic reactivity of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(η4-C4Ph2) in small molecule activation

The uranium metallacyclocumulene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(η⁴-C₄Ph₂) (3) was isolated from the reaction mixture containing [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1), potassium graphite (KC₈) and 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne (PhCC-CCPh) in good yield. The reactivity of 3 towards various small organic molecules was evaluated. For example, while complex 3 shows no reactivity towards alkynes and 2,2'-bipyridine, it may deliver the [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se) and Ph₃CN₃, or react as a nucleophile in the presence of carbodiimides, isothiocyanates, aldehydes, ketones, and pyridine derivatives, forming five-, seven- or nine-membered heterometallacycles. On the contrary, addition of Ph₂CS to 3 induces CS bond cleavage yielding the dithiolate complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[S₂(C₁₂H₅Ph₅)] (14). In contrast, the closely related, but sterically more encumbered uranium metallacyclocumulene [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U(η⁴-C₄Ph₂) (4) features a more limited reactivity which is restricted to mono- and double insertions with small unsaturated organic molecules such as isothiocyanates, ketones and nitriles.

Does Reduction-Induced Isomerization of a Uranium(III) Aryl Complex Proceed via C-H Oxidative Addition and Reductive Elimination across the Uranium(II/IV) Redox Couple?

Reaction of the uranium(III) bis(amidinate) aryl complex {TerphC(NⁱPr)₂}₂U(Terph) (2, where Terph = 4,4″-di-tert-butyl-m-terphenyl-2'-yl) with a strong reductant enabled isolation of isomeric uranium(III) bis(amidinate) aryl product {TerphC(NⁱPr)₂}₂U(Terph*) (3, where Terph* = 4,4″-di-tert-butyl-m-terphenyl-4'-yl). In terms of connectivity, 3 differs from 2 only in the positions of the U-C and C-H bonds on the central aryl ring of the m-terphenyl-based ligand. A deuterium labeling study ruled out mechanisms for this isomerization involving intermolecular abstraction or deprotonation of the ligand C-H bonds activated during the reaction. Due to the complexity of this rapid, heterogeneous reaction, experimental studies could not further distinguish between two different intramolecular C-H activation mechanisms. However, high-level computational studies were consistent with a mechanism that included two sets of unimolecular, mononuclear C-H oxidative addition and reductive elimination steps involving uranium(II/IV).

Small-Molecule Activation Mediated by [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy)

The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC₈) to a mixture of [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph₂C═N)₂, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS₂, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph₂CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph₂CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)₂, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CS)] (16), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CO)] (18), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(N₂C₁₀H₇C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(I)(bipy) (15).

Cation assisted binding and cleavage of dinitrogen by uranium complexes

N2 binding affinity decreases markedly in a series of isostructural U(iii)–alkali ions complexes with increasing cation size. N2 binding is undetectable in the Cs analogue, but the first example of cesium-assisted N2 cleavage to bis-nitride was observed at ambient condition.

A Uranium(II) Arene Complex That Acts as a Uranium(I) Synthon

Two-electron reduction of the amidate-supported U(III) mono(arene) complex U(TDA)₃ (2) with KC₈ yields the anionic bis(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₂] (3) (TDA = N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)pivalamido). EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and calculations using DFT as well as multireference CASSCF methods all provide strong evidence that the electronic structure of 3 is best represented as a 5f⁴ U(II) metal center bound to a monoreduced arene ligand. Reactivity studies show 3 reacts as a U(I) synthon by behaving as a two-electron reductant toward I₂ to form the dinuclear U(III)-U(III) triiodide species [K[2.2.2]cryptand][(UI(TDA)₂)₂(μ-I)] (6) and as a three-electron reductant toward cycloheptatriene (CHT) to form the U(IV) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(η⁷-C₇H₇)(TDA)₂(THF)] (7). The reaction of 3 with cyclooctatetraene (COT) generates a mixture of the U(III) anion [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₄] (1-crypt) and U(COT)₂, while the addition of COT to complex 2 instead yields the dinuclear U(IV)-U(IV) inverse sandwich complex [U(TDA)₃]₂(μ-η⁸:η³-C₈H₈) (8). Two-electron reduction of the homoleptic Th(IV) amidate complex Th(TDA)₄ (4) with KC₈ gives the mono(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][Th(TDA)₃(THF)] (5). The C-C bond lengths and torsion angles in the bound arene of 5 suggest a direduced arene bound to a Th(IV) metal center; this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations.

Density Functional Theory Analysis of the Importance of Coordination Geometry for 5f36d1 versus 5f4 Electron Configurations in U(II) Complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on four known and seven hypothetical U(II) complexes indicate the importance of coordination geometry in favoring 5f³6d¹ versus 5f⁴ electronic ground states. The known [Cp″₃U]^-, [Cp^tet₃U]^-, and [U(NR₂)₃]^- [Cp″ = C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂, Cp^tet = C₅Me₄H, and R = SiMe₃] anions were found to have 5f³6d¹ ground states, while a 5f⁴ ground state was found for the known compound (NHAr^iPr₆)₂U. The UV-visible spectra of the known 5f³6d¹ compounds were simulated via time-dependent DFT and are in qualitative agreement with the experimental spectra. For the hypothetical U(II) compounds, the 5f³6d¹ configuration is predicted for [U(CHR₂)₃]^-, [U(H₃BH)₃]^-, [U(OAr')₄]^2-, and [(C₈H₈)U]^2- (OAr' = O-C₆H₂^tBu₂-2,6-Me-4). In the case of [U(bnz')₄]^2- (bnz' = CH₂-C₆H₄^tBu-4), a 5f³ configuration with a ligand-based radical was found as the ground state.

Temperature-robust and ratiometric G-quadruplex proximate DNAzyme assay for robustly monitoring of uranium pollution and its microbial biosorbents screening

Uranium pollution in environment and food chain is a serious threat to public security and human health. Herein, we proposed a temperature-robust, ratiometric, and label-free bioassay based on G-quadruplex proximate DNAzyme (G4DNAzyme), accommodating us to precisely monitor uranium pollution and biosorption. The proximity of split G-quadruplex probes was proposed to sense UO₂²⁺-activated DNAzyme activity, thus eliminating the use of chemically labeled nucleic acid probes. And the simultaneous monitoring of G-quadruplex and double-stranded structures of DNAzyme probes contributed to a ratiometric and robust detection of UO₂²⁺. Particularly, the separation of enzymatic digestion and fluorescence monitoring endued a robust and highly responsive detection of UO₂²⁺ upon the temperature of enzymatic digestion process ranged from 18° to 41 °C. Consequently, G4DNAzyme assay allowed a robust, label-free and ratiometric quantification of uranium. We demonstrated the feasibility of G4DNAzyme assay for estimating uranium pollution in water and aquatic product samples. Ultimately, G4DNAzyme assay was adopted to serve as the platform to screen bacterial species and conditions for uranium biosorption, promising its roles in uranium associated biosafety control.

Amidinate Supporting Ligands Influence Molecularity in Formation of Uranium Nitrides

Uranium nitride complexes are attractive targets for chemists as molecular models for the bonding, reactivity, and magnetic properties of next-generation nuclear fuels, but these molecules are uncommon and can be difficult to isolate due to their high reactivity. Here, we describe the synthesis of three new multinuclear uranium nitride complexes, [U(BCMA)₂]₂(μ-N)(μ-κ¹:κ¹-BCMA) (7), [(U(BIMA)₂)₂(μ-N)(μ-NⁱPr)(K₂(μ-η³:η³-CH₂CHNⁱPr)]₂ (8), and [U(BIMA)₂]₂(μ-N)(μ-κ¹:κ¹-BIMA) (9) (BCMA = N,N-bis(cyclohexyl)methylamidinate, BIMA = N,N-bis(iso-propyl)methylamidinate), from U(III) and U(IV) amidinate precursors. By varying the amidinate ligand substituents and azide source, we were able to influence the composition and size of these nitride complexes. ¹⁵N isotopic labeling experiments confirmed the bridging nitride moieties in 7-9 were formed via two-electron reduction of azide. The tetra-uranium cluster 8 was isolated in 99% yield via reductive cleavage of the amidinate ligands; this unusual molecule contains nitrogen-based ligands with formal 1-, 2-, and 3- charges. Additionally, chemical oxidation of the U(IV) precursor U(N₃)(BCMA)₃ yielded the cationic U(V) species [U(N₃)(BCMA)₃][OTf]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed a U(IV) oxidation state for the uranium centers in the three nitride-bridged complexes and provided a comparison of magnetic behavior in the structurally related U(III)-U(IV)-U(V) series U(BCMA)₃, U(N₃)(BCMA)₃, and [U(N₃)(BCMA)₃][OTf]. At 240 K, the magnetic moments in this series decreased with increasing oxidation state, i.e., U(III) > U(IV) > U(V); this trend follows the decreasing number of 5f valence electrons along this series.

Single metal four-electron reduction by U(ii) and masked "U(ii)" compounds

The redox chemistry of uranium is dominated by single electron transfer reactions while single metal four-electron transfers remain unknown in f-element chemistry. Here we show that the oxo bridged diuranium(iii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-O)], 1, effects the two-electron reduction of diphenylacetylene and the four-electron reduction of azobenzene through a masked U(ii) intermediate affording a stable metallacyclopropene complex of uranium(iv), [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(η ²-C₂Ph₂){N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 3, and a bis(imido)uranium(vi) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(NPh)₂{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 4, respectively. The same reactivity is observed for the previously reported U(ii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 2. Computational studies indicate that the four-electron reduction of azobenzene occurs at a single U(ii) centre via two consecutive two-electron transfers and involves the formation of a U(iv) hydrazide intermediate. The isolation of the cis-hydrazide intermediate [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(N₂Ph₂){N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 5, corroborated the mechanism proposed for the formation of the U(vi) bis(imido) complex. The reduction of azobenzene by U(ii) provided the first example of a "clear-cut" single metal four-electron transfer in f-element chemistry.
