Abstract
Androgen production primarily occurs in Leydig cells located in the interstitial compartment of the testis. In aging males, testosterone is crucial for maintaining muscle mass and strength, bone density, sexual function, metabolic health, energy levels, cognitive function, as well as overall well-being. As men age, testosterone production by Leydig cells of the testes begins to decline at a rate of approximately 1% per year starting from their 30s. This review highlights recent findings concerning the use of natural polyphenolics compounds, such as flavonoids, resveratrol, and phenolic acids, to enhance testosterone production, thereby preventing age-related degenerative conditions associated with testosterone insufficiency. Interestingly, most of the natural polyphenolic antioxidants having beneficial effects on testosterone production tend to enhance the expression of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (Star) gene in Leydig cells. The STAR protein facilitates the entry of the steroid precursor cholesterol inside mitochondria, a rate-limiting step for androgen biosynthesis. Natural polyphenolic compounds can also improve the activities of steroidogenic enzymes, hypothalamus-pituitary gland axis signaling, and testosterone bioavailability. Thus, many polyphenolic compounds such as luteolin, quercetin, resveratrol, ferulic acid phenethyl ester or gigantol may be promising in delaying the initiation of late-onset hypogonadism accompanying aging in males.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Berries are a rich source of antioxidant polyphenols and other nutrients that are associated with good health. Allostatic load (AL) is an aggregate measure of chronic stress-induced physiological dysregulations across cardiovascular, metabolic, autonomic, and immune systems; the extent of these dysregulations, collectively or in each system, can be characterized by a composite score or a domain score assessed by integrated biomarkers. It was hypothesized that the anti-inflammatory and other effects of berries lower AL. The association was determined between berry consumption and AL composite and domain scores in the 2003-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Berry intake was measured using two 24 h dietary recalls collected from US adults in the 2003-2010 NHANES (n = 7684). The association with AL and its specific domains was examined using population weight-adjusted multivariable linear regression. RESULTS The mean AL composite scores for consumers of any berries (11.9), strawberries (11.6), and blueberries (11.6), respectively, were significantly lower than nonconsumers (12.3), after fully adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and dietary confounders. A significant dose-response relationship was determined between greater consumption of total berries, strawberries, and blueberries and lower mean AL composite scores (p-trend < 0.05, for all). Consistently, mean cardiovascular and metabolic domain scores remained significantly lower in the consumers of total berries (mean cardiovascular domain score: 4.73 versus 4.97 for nonconsumers; mean metabolic domain score: 2.97 versus 3.1), strawberries (4.73 versus 4.95; 2.99 versus 3.1), and blueberries (4.6 versus 4.95; 2.92 versus 3.11). Berry consumers also had significantly lower mean AL immune scores (1.52 versus 1.56) and lower mean AL autonomic scores (2.49 versus 2.57) than nonconsumers (initial sample: n = 15,620). CONCLUSIONS The current study indicates that consumption of berries lowers the AL composite scores and potentially reduces stress-related disease risks in the US adult population.

Abstract
There is mounting concern over the potential harms associated with ultra-processed foods, including poor mental health and antisocial behavior. Cutting-edge research provides an enhanced understanding of biophysiological mechanisms, including microbiome pathways, and invites a historical reexamination of earlier work that investigated the relationship between nutrition and criminal behavior. Here, in this perspective article, we explore how this emergent research casts new light and greater significance on previous key observations. Despite expanding interest in the field dubbed 'nutritional psychiatry', there has been relatively little attention paid to its relevancy within criminology and the criminal justice system. Since public health practitioners, allied mental health professionals, and policymakers play key roles throughout criminal justice systems, a holistic perspective on both historical and emergent research is critical. While there are many questions to be resolved, the available evidence suggests that nutrition might be an underappreciated factor in prevention and treatment along the criminal justice spectrum. The intersection of nutrition and biopsychosocial health requires transdisciplinary discussions of power structures, industry influence, and marketing issues associated with widespread food and social inequalities. Some of these discussions are already occurring under the banner of 'food crime'. Given the vast societal implications, it is our contention that the subject of nutrition in the multidisciplinary field of criminology-referred to here as nutritional criminology-deserves increased scrutiny. Through combining historical findings and cutting-edge research, we aim to increase awareness of this topic among the broad readership of the journal, with the hopes of generating new hypotheses and collaborations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 6-Gingerol (6-G) is the primary active phytocomponent of ginger and has been shown to regulate multiple targets against cancer and its treatment. Androgen receptors (ARs) remain critical in the progression of prostate cancer (PCa). This study focuses on investigating 6-G as a promising anti-cancerous agent that inhibits AR activity significantly. METHODS In this study, molecular docking simulation was done to investigate the binding affinity of 6-G and control drug Bicalutamide (BT) against oncogenic AR and tumor suppressor estrogen receptor β (ERβ). The crystal structure of AR and ERβ was retrieved from Protein Data Bank (PDB) and docked with 3D Pubchem structures of 6-G using iGEMDOCK and AutoDock. Further in vitro study was done to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-cancerous, apoptotic, and wound healing potential of 6-G. RESULTS The result displays that 6-G shows good binding affinity with AR and ERβ. Condensation of the nucleus, change in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and the ability to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) were done in human PCa PC-3 cells. Results from the MTT assay demonstrated that 6-G and control drug BT showed significant (p < 0.01) dose and time dependent inhibition of human PCa PC-3 cells. 6-G increased the ROS generation intracellularly and decreased the MMP, and cell migration in treated PCa PC-3 cells. 6-G treated cells showed fragmented, condensed chromatin and nuclear apoptotic bodies. CONCLUSIONS Thus, this study validates 6-G as a potential drug candidate against human PCa. However, further study of the anticancer potency of 6-G has to be done before its use for PCa treatment.

Abstract
Gallic acid (GA) is known to be a natural phenolic compound with antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. This study aims to investigate the impact of GA against restraint stress-induced oxidative damage, anxiety-like behavior, neuronal loss, and spatial learning and memory impairment in male Wistar rats. The animals were divided into four groups (n = 8) and subjected to restraint stress for 4 h per day for 14 consecutive days or left undisturbed (control without inducing stress). In the treatment group, the animals were treated with 2 mL normal saline plus 100 mg/kg GA per day for 14 consecutive days (STR + GA group). The animals received the drug or normal saline by gavage 2 h before inducing restraint stress. ELISA assay measured oxidative stress factors. Elevated-plus maze and Morris water maze tests assessed anxiety-like behavior and spatial learning and memory, respectively. Also, neuronal density was determined using Nissl staining. Restraint stress significantly increased MDA and reduced the activities of GPX and SOD in the stressed rats, which were reserved by treatment with 100 mg/kg GA. Restraint stress markedly enhanced the anxiety-like behavior and spatial learning and memory impairment that were reserved by GA. In addition, treatment with GA reduced the neuronal loss in the stressed rats in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions. Taken together, our findings suggest that GA has the potential to be used as a good candidate to attenuate neurobehavioral disorders as well as neuronal loss in the hippocampus and PFC induced by restraint stress via reducing oxidative damage.

Abstract
Chronic stress is known to perturb serotonergic regulation in the brain, leading to mood, learning and memory impairments and increasing the risk of developing mood disorders. The influence of the gut microbiota on serotonergic regulation in the brain has received increased attention recently, justifying the investigation of the role of diet on the gut and the brain in mood disorders. Here, using a 4-week chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model in mice, we aimed to investigate the effects of a high-fat high-glycaemic index (HFD) and high-fibre fruit & vegetable "superfood" (SUP) modifications of a semi-pure AIN93M diet on behaviour, serotonin synthesis and metabolism pathway regulation in the brain and the gut, as well as the gut microbiota and the peripheral adrenal medullary system. CUMS induced anxiety-like behaviour, dysregulated the tryptophan and serotonin metabolic pathways in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and colon, and altered the composition of the gut microbiota. CUMS reduced the catecholamine synthetic capacity of the adrenal glands. Differential effects were found in these parameters in the HFD and SUP diet. Thus, dietary modifications may profoundly affect the multiple dynamic systems involved in mood disorders.

Abstract
We previously showed that social stress exposure in mature adult mice increased blood corticosterone concentrations at 2 days, disrupted hepatic lipid metabolism-related pathway at 30 days, and increased the risk of overweight with hepatic hypertrophy at 90 days. To further investigate the effects of aging on the physiological responses to social stress, we conducted a study using male BALB/c mice at the ages of 2 months (mature age), 14 months (middle age) and 26 months (old age), and exposed them to confrontation stress for 2 or 7 days. Blood corticosterone concentrations were increased at 2 days of stress, and then returned to baseline concentrations. This change was observed only at 2 months of age. We further examined the effect of aging on hepatic gene expression of fibroblast growth factor-21 (Fgf21) and found that its expression was significantly decreased after 7 days of stress at 14 months of age and after 2 days of stress at 26 months of age, indicating these decreasing effects became more pronounced with age. In conclusion, our study suggests that hepatic Fgf21 expression decrease under exposure to confrontation stress at middle or more age, indicating that stress response on Fgf21 related pathway might be more pronounced with age when exposed to stress.

Abstract
Background: Based on evidence there are accepted links among early nutrition, epigenetic processes, and cognitive performance. Almond as a nutritious food could exert neuroprotective effects and improve anxiety, learning, and memory.Methods: In the current study, female rats were fed with a diet containing 5% (w/w) almonds during the mating period (two days) and gestation period (21 consecutive days). Then, the effect of the almond diet on short-term memory (Y maze), anxiety (elevated plus maze), and stress adaptation (forced swimming test) were investigated in the adult male offspring. The hippocampus (HIP), prefrontal cortex (PFC), and amygdala (AMY) of offspring were collected, and the level of cyclic AMP response element-binding proteins (CREB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was assessed by western blotting. Also, Monoamine oxidases (MAO)-A and B activity were evaluated via enzymatic assays.Results: Our results indicated that prenatal almond consumption improved memory, made a modest reduction in anxiety-like behavior, and increased stress adaptation in adult male offspring. Also, molecular assessments showed an increased level of CREB phosphorylation and BDNF in the HIP and PFC of the almond group, while the activity of MAO-A and MAO-B was inhibited by almond consumption in mentioned areas.Discussion: These findings introduce almonds as a beneficial diet during pregnancy, for improving short-term memory, stress adaptation, and cognitive performance in adult offspring.

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a result of the progression of chronic kidney diseases (CKD), a global health problem with a high cost of treatment and no ideal therapy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the pharmacological efficacy of the total flavonoids in Epimedium koreanum Nakai (TFE), a dietary supplement, against CRF and to determine the mechanism of actions. An adenine-induced CRF rat model and a TGF-β1 induced human kidney proximal tubule epithelial (HK-2) cell based in vitro renal fibrosis model were established and used to evaluate TFE's efficacy. Renal hemodynamics, biochemical indexes, inflammatory cytokines, histopathology and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were determined to evaluate the efficacy of TFE on CRF. NMR-based metabolomics, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, immunofluorescence (IF) staining, quantitative real time-PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blotting were conducted to determine the mechanism. The results showed that TFE had a significant effect on CRF at 150 mg kg-1 d-1 and could significantly alleviate renal fibrosis in the animal model. Twelve potential biomarkers, which mainly involve energy metabolism pathways, for CRF were identified using the metabolomics approach. The mechanism study suggested that TFE regulated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and AMPK/silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1)/nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Furthermore, the effect of TFE was inhibited by compound C in the in vitro experiment, which also confirmed the above conclusion.

Abstract
Chronic stress is a potential problem associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. Bee pollen, a powerful antioxidant, has many therapeutic effects. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of one of the Anatolian bee pollens on depression/anxiety. 24 male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups as control, stress, and bee pollen + stress. Bee pollen (200 mg/kg/day) was given to rats exposed to physical stress for 10 days. Open field test (OFT) and forced swimming test (FST) were applied to monitor the behavioral changes of the rats. After behavioral tests, the rats were euthanized. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured by ELISA to evaluate neurological and biochemical changes in rat hippocampal tissue. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels in the brain were evaluated. According to the behavioral test results, bee pollen reduced anxiety-like behavior but did not affect depression-like behavior. We also found that bee pollen suppressed neuroinflammation while reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in hippocampal tissues. Moreover, bee pollen significantly increased the level of BDNF in the hippocampus. In conclusion, bee pollen reduced oxidative damage and neuroinflammation caused by immobilization stress in rat brain tissue. Therefore, we suggest that bee pollen may be an effective natural compound in alleviating the negative effects caused by immobilization stress.

Abstract
Introduction Heat stress caused by high temperatures has important adverse effects on the safety and health status of humans and animals, and dietary interventions to alleviate heat stress in daily life are highly feasible. Methods In this study, the components of mung bean that have heat stress-regulating effects were characterized by in vitro antioxidant indicators and heat stress cell models. Results As a result, 15 target monomeric polyphenol fractions were identified based on untargeted analysis on an ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with high field quadrupole orbit high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QE-HF-HRMS) platform and available reports. The results of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging showed that mung bean polyphenols (crude extract) and 15 monomeric polyphenols had better antioxidant activity, followed by oil and mung bean peptides, while protein and polysaccharides had relatively poor antioxidant activity. Qualitative and quantitative assays for 20 polyphenols (15 polyphenols and 5 isomers) were then established based on platform targets. Vitexin, orientin, and caffeic acid were identified as monomeric polyphenols for heat stress control in mung beans based on their content. Finally, mild (39°C), moderate (41°C), and severe (43°C) heat stress models were successfully constructed based on mouse intestinal epithelial Mode-k cells and human colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell lines, all with an optimal heat stress modeling time of 6 h. Screening of mung bean fractions using HSP70 mRNA content, a key indicator of heat stress. As a result, HSP70 mRNA content was significantly up-regulated by different levels of heat stress in both cell models. The addition of mung bean polyphenols (crude extract), vitexin, orientin, and caffeic acid resulted in significant down-regulation of HSP70 mRNA content, and the higher the level of heat stress, the more significant the regulation effect, with orientin having the best effect. Mung bean proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, oils and mung bean soup resulted in increased or no change in HSP70 mRNA levels after most heat stresses. Discussion The polyphenols were shown to be the main heat stress regulating components in mung bean. The results of the validation experiments confirm that the above three monomeric polyphenols may be the main heat stress regulating substances in mung bean. The role of polyphenols in the regulation of heat stress is closely linked to their antioxidant properties.
