A poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)/carbon micro-sphere-bismuth nanoflake composite and multifunctional Co-doped graphene for a benchmark photo-supercapacitor

Molecular imprinting electrochemical sensor based on hollow spherical PProDOT-2CH2OH and chitosan-derived carbon materials for highly sensitive detection of chloramphenicol

The misuse of chloramphenicol (CAP) has jeopardized environmental safety. It is critical to create an effective and sensitive CAP detection technique. In this paper, a composite of chitosan (CS)-derived carbon material modified hollow spherical hydroxylated poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT-2CH2OH) was designed, which innovatively used o-phenylenediamine and p-aminobenzoic acid as bi-functional monomers to prepare molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) sensors for highly sensitive analysis and determination of CAP. It was found that the hollow spherical structure of PProDOT-2CH2OH significantly enhanced the rapid electron migration. When combined with the CS-derived carbon material, which has multi-functional sites, it improved the electrical activity and stability of the sensor. It also provided more active centers for the MIP layer to specifically recognize CAP. Therefore, this MIP sensor had a wide linear response (0.0001 ∼ 125 μM), a low limit of detection (LOD, 6.6 pM), excellent selectivity and stability. In addition, studies showed that the sensor has potential practical value. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Chloramphenicol (CAP) is one of the most widely used antibiotics with the highest dosage due to its low price and broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Due to its incomplete metabolism in living organisms and its difficulty in degrading in the environment, contamination caused by it can pose a threat to public health. In this study, a novel molecularly imprinted sensor (MIP/PC2C1/GCE) was designed to provide a new idea for rapid and precise removal of CAP by adsorption. The detection of CAP in pharmaceutical, water quality, and food fields was realized.

Multifunctional Wearable Electronic Based on Fabric Modified by PPy/NiCoAl-LDH for Energy Storage, Electromagnetic Interference Shielding, and Photothermal Conversion

With the rapid advancement of electronic technology, traditional textiles are challenged to keep up with the demands of wearable electronics. It is anticipated that multifunctional textile-based electronics incorporating energy storage, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and photothermal conversion are expected to alleviate this problem. Herein, a multifunctional cotton fabric with hierarchical array structure (PPy/NiCoAl-LDH/Cotton) is fabricated by the introduction of NiCoAl-layered double hydroxide (NiCoAl-LDH) nanosheet arrays on cotton fibers, followed by polymerization and growth of continuous dense polypyrrole (PPy) conductive layers. The multifunctional cotton fabric shows a high specific areal capacitance of 754.72 mF cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2 and maintains a long cycling life (80.95% retention after 1000 cycles). The symmetrical supercapacitor assembled with this fabric achieves an energy density of 20.83 Wh cm-2 and a power density of 0.23 mWcm-2. Moreover, the excellent electromagnetic interference shielding (38.83 dB), photothermal conversion (70.2 °C at 1000 mW cm-2), flexibility and durability are also possess by the multifunctional cotton fabric. Such a multifunctional cotton fabric has great potential for using in new energy, smart electronics, and thermal management applications.

MOF/graphene oxide based composites in smart supercapacitors: a comprehensive review on the electrochemical evaluation and material development for advanced energy storage devices

The surge in interest surrounding energy storage solutions, driven by the demand for electric vehicles and the global energy crisis, has spotlighted the effectiveness of carbon-based supercapacitors in meeting high-power requirements. Concurrently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained attention as a template for their integration with graphene oxide (GO) in composite materials which have emerged as a promising avenue for developing high-power supercapacitors, elevating smart supercapacitor efficiency, cyclic stability, and durability, providing crucial insights for overcoming contemporary energy storage obstacles. The identified combination leverages the strengths of both materials, showcasing significant potential for advancing energy storage technologies in a sustainable and efficient manner. In this research, an in-depth review has been presented, in which properties, rationale and integration of MOF/GO composites have been critically examined. Various fabrication techniques have been thoroughly analyzed, emphasizing the specific attributes of MOFs, such as high surface area and modifiable porosity, in tandem with the conductive and stabilizing features of graphene oxide. Electrochemical characterizations and physicochemical mechanisms underlying MOF/GO composites have been examined, emphasizing their synergistic interaction, leading to superior electrical conductivity, mechanical robustness, and energy storage capacity. The article concludes by identifying future research directions, emphasizing sustainable production, material optimization, and integration strategies to address the persistent challenges in the field of energy storage. In essence, this research article aims to offer a concise and insightful resource for researchers engaged in overcoming the pressing energy storage issues of our time through the exploration of MOF/GO composites in smart supercapacitors.

Superior cyclability of high surface area vanadium nitride in salt electrolytes

High surface area vanadium nitrides (VNs) have been extensively studied as materials for aqueous supercapacitors due to the high initial capacitance in alkaline media at low scan rates. However, low capacitance retention and safety limit their implementation. The use of neutral aqueous salt solutions has the potential to mitigate both of these concerns, but is limited in analysis. Hence, we report on the synthesis and characterization of high surface area VN as a supercapacitor material in a wide variety of aqueous chlorides and sulfates using Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Li⁺ ions. We observe the following trend in the salt electrolytes: Mg²⁺ > Li⁺ > K⁺ > Na⁺ > Ca²⁺. Mg²⁺ systems provide the best performance at higher scan rates with areal capacitances of 294 μF cm^-2 in 1 M MgSO₄ over a 1.35 V operating window at 2000 mV s^-1. Furthermore, VN in 1 M MgSO₄ maintained a 36% capacitance retention from 2 to 2000 mV s^-1 compared to 7% in 1 M KOH. Capacitance in 1 M MgSO₄ and 1 M MgCl₂ increased to 121% and 110% of their original values after 500 cycles and maintained capacitances of 589 and 508 μF cm^-2 at 50 mV s^-1 after 1000 cycles, respectively. In contrast, in 1 M KOH the capacitance decreases to 37% of its original value, reaching only 29 F g^-1 at 50 mV s^-1 after 1000 cycles. The superior performance of the Mg system is attributed to a reversible surface 2 e^- transfer pseudocapacitive mechanism between Mg²⁺ and VN_xO_y. These findings can be used to further the field of aqueous supercapacitors to build safer and more stable energy storage systems that can charge quicker compared to KOH systems.

NiCo Metal-Organic Framework and Porous Carbon Interlayer-Based Supercapacitors Integrated with a Solar Cell for a Stand-Alone Power Supply System

Nickel cobalt-metal-organic framework (NiCo-MOF), with a semihollow spherical morphology composed of rhombic dodecahedron nanostructures, was synthesized using a scalable and facile wet chemical route. Such a structure endowed the material with open pores, which enabled rapid ion ingress and egress, and the high effective surface area of the MOF allowed the uptake and release of a large number of electrolyte ions during charge-discharge. By combining this NiCo-MOF cathode with a highly porous carbon (PC) anode (derived from the naturally grown and abundantly available bio-waste, namely, palm kernel shells), the resulting PC//NiCo-MOF supercapacitor using an aqueous potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte delivered a capacitance of 134 F g^-1, energy and power densities of 24 Wh kg^-1 and 0.8 kW kg^-1 at 1 A g^-1, respectively, over an operational voltage window of 1.6 V. By employing thin interlayers of PC coated over a Whatman filter paper (PC@FP), the modified supercapacitor configuration of PC/PC@FP//PC@FP/NiCo-MOF delivered greatly enhanced performance. This cell delivered a capacitance of 520 F g^-1 and an energy density of 92 Wh kg^-1, improved by nearly 4-fold, compared to the analogous supercapacitor without the interlayers (at the same power and current densities and voltage window), thus evidencing the role of the cost-effective, electrically conducting porous carbon interlayers in amplifying the supercapacitor's energy storage capabilities. Further, illumination of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using a three-series configuration and the photocharging of this supercapacitor with a solution-processed solar cell are also demonstrated. The latter confirms its ability to function as a stand-alone power supply system for electronic/computing devices, which can even operate under medium lighting conditions.
