Cellulose paper support with dual-layered nano-microstructures for enhanced plasmonic photothermal heating and solar vapor generation

Antibacterial Janus cellulose/MXene paper with exceptional salt rejection for sustainable and durable solar-driven desalination

The scarcity of freshwater resources and increasing demand for drinking water have driven the development of durable and sustainable desalination technologies. Although MXene composites have shown promise due to their excellent photothermal conversion and high thermal conductivity, their high hydrophilicity often leads to salt precipitation and low durability. In this study, we present a novel Cellulose (CF)/MXene paper with a Janus hydrophobic/hydrophilic configuration for long-term and efficient solar-driven desalination. The paper features a dual-layer structure, with the upper hydrophobic layer composed of CF/MXene paper exhibiting convexness to serve as a photothermal layer with exceptional salt rejection properties. Simultaneously, the bottom porous layer made of CF acts as an efficient thermal insulation. This unique design effectively minimizes heat loss and facilitates efficient water transportation. The Janus CF/MXene paper demonstrates a high evaporation rate of 1.11 kg m-2h-1 and solar thermal conversion efficiency of 82.52 % under 1 sun irradiation. Importantly, even after 2500 h of operation in a simulated seawater environment, the paper maintains a stable evaporation rate without significant salt deposition and biodegradation due to an antibacterial rate exceeding 90 %. These findings highlight the potential of the Janus CF/MXene paper for scalable manufacturing and practical applications in solar-driven desalination.

CO2-laser-induced carbonization of calcium chloride-treated chitin nanopaper for applications in solar thermal heating

Remarkable progress has been made in the development of carbonized chitin nanofiber materials for various functional applications, including solar thermal heating, owing to their N- and O-doped carbon structures and sustainable nature. Carbonization is a fascinating process for the functionalization of chitin nanofiber materials. However, conventional carbonization techniques require harmful reagents, high-temperature treatment, and time-consuming processes. Although CO₂ laser irradiation has progressed as a facile and second-scale high-speed carbonization process, CO₂-laser-carbonized chitin nanofiber materials and their applications have not yet been explored. Herein, we demonstrate the CO₂-laser-induced carbonization of chitin nanofiber paper (denoted as chitin nanopaper) and investigate the solar thermal heating performance of the CO₂-laser-carbonized chitin nanopaper. While the original chitin nanopaper was inevitably burned out by CO₂ laser irradiation, CO₂-laser-induced carbonization of the chitin nanopaper was achieved by pretreatment with calcium chloride as a combustion inhibitor. The CO₂-laser-carbonized chitin nanopaper exhibits excellent solar thermal heating performance; its equilibrium surface temperature under 1 sun irradiation is 77.7 °C, which is higher than those of the commercial nanocarbon films and the conventionally carbonized bionanofiber papers. This study paves the way for the high-speed fabrication of carbonized chitin nanofiber materials and their application in solar thermal heating toward the effective utilization of solar energy as heat.

Flexible biomimetic materials with excellent photothermal performance and superhydrophobicity

Although thousands of superhydrophobic composites have been reported, it is still a challenge to develop eco-friendly superhydrophobic materials by a simple and low-cost strategy. Here, a paper-based superhydrophobic material was prepared by carbon fiber powders and polydimethylsiloxane through a facile spraying method. This obtained material has excellent liquid resistance and self-cleaning properties, whose contact angle reaches 155°. In addition, it possesses excellent photothermal conversion characteristics with a stable surface temperature of 73.4 °C and good water evaporation performance with an evaporation rate up to 1.08 kg/(m2·h) under one solar intensity (100 mW/cm2). Also, it has outstanding self-deicing performance, whose deicing time is 120 s earlier than that of the untreated surface under one solar intensity. An adaptability test shows this strategy of functional coatings can also be applied to other fiber substrates (coating paper, kraft paper, non-woven fabric, paulownia veneer, etc.). Overall, this superhydrophobic material has a promising application prospect in many fields such as waterproof packaging, deicing materials, water evaporation materials, etc.

Thermoplasmonics in Solar Energy Conversion: Materials, Nanostructured Designs, and Applications

The indispensable requirement for sustainable development of human society has forced almost all countries to seek highly efficient and cost-effective ways to harvest and convert solar energy. Though continuous progress has advanced, it remains a daunting challenge to achieve full-spectrum solar absorption and maximize the conversion efficiency of sunlight. Recently, thermoplasmonics has emerged as a promising solution, which involves several beneficial effects including enhanced light absorption and scattering, generation and relaxation of hot carriers, as well as localized/collective heating, offering tremendous opportunities for optimized energy conversion. Besides, all these functionalities can be tailored via elaborated designs of materials and nanostructures. Here, first the fundamental physics governing thermoplasmonics is presented and then the strategies for both material selection and nanostructured designs toward more efficient energy conversion are summarized. Based on this, recent progress in thermoplasmonic applications including solar evaporation, photothermal chemistry, and thermophotovoltaic is reviewed. Finally, the corresponding challenges and prospects are discussed.

Au-Ag Alloy Nanocorals with Optimal Broadband Absorption for Sunlight-Driven Thermoplasmonic Applications

Noble metal nanoparticles are efficient converters of light into heat but typically cover a limited spectral range or have intense light scattering, resulting in unsuited for broadband thermoplasmonic applications and sunlight-driven heat generation. Here, Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles were deliberately molded with an irregular nanocoral (NC) shape to obtain broadband plasmon absorption from the visible to the near-infrared yet at a lower cost compared to pure Au nanostructures. The Au-Ag NCs are produced through a green and scalable methodology that relies on pulsed laser fragmentation in a liquid, without chemicals or capping molecules, leaving the particles surface free for conjugation with thiolated molecules and enabling full processability and easy inclusion in various matrixes. Numerical calculations showed that panchromism, i.e., the occurrence of a broadband absorption from the visible to the near-infrared region, is due to the special morphology of Au-Ag alloy NCs and consists of a purely absorptive behavior superior to monometallic Au or Ag NCs. The thermoplasmonic properties were assessed by multiwavelength light-to-heat conversion experiments and exploited for the realization of a cellulose-based solar-steam generation device with low-cost, simple design but competitive performances. Overall, here it is shown how laser light can be used to harvest solar light. Besides, the optimized broadband plasmon absorption, the green synthetic procedure, and the other set of positive features for thermoplasmonic applications of Au-Ag NCs will contribute to the development of environmentally friendly devices of practical utility in a sustainable world.

Nanocellulose Paper Semiconductor with a 3D Network Structure and Its Nano-Micro-Macro Trans-Scale Design

Semiconducting nanomaterials with 3D network structures exhibit various fascinating properties such as electrical conduction, high permeability, and large surface areas, which are beneficial for adsorption, separation, and sensing applications. However, research on these materials is substantially restricted by the limited trans-scalability of their structural design and tunability of electrical conductivity. To overcome this challenge, a pyrolyzed cellulose nanofiber paper (CNP) semiconductor with a 3D network structure is proposed. Its nano-micro-macro trans-scale structural design is achieved by a combination of iodine-mediated morphology-retaining pyrolysis with spatially controlled drying of a cellulose nanofiber dispersion and paper-crafting techniques, such as microembossing, origami, and kirigami. The electrical conduction of this semiconductor is widely and systematically tuned, via the temperature-controlled progressive pyrolysis of CNP, from insulating (1012 Ω cm) to quasimetallic (10-2 Ω cm), which considerably exceeds that attained in other previously reported nanomaterials with 3D networks. The pyrolyzed CNP semiconductor provides not only the tailorable functionality for applications ranging from water-vapor-selective sensors to enzymatic biofuel cell electrodes but also the designability of macroscopic device configurations for stretchable and wearable applications. This study provides a pathway to realize structurally and functionally designable semiconducting nanomaterials and all-nanocellulose semiconducting technology for diverse electronics.
