Tuning and tracking the growth of gold nanoparticles synthesized using binary surfactant mixtures

Product Metrics for the Manufacturability of Single-Crystal Gold Nanorods via Reaction Engineering

Colloidal gold nanorods (AuNRs) are integral to a diverse array of technologies, ranging from plasmonic imaging, therapeutics, and sensors to large-area coatings, catalysts, filters, and optical attenuators. Different lab-scale strategies are available to fabricate AuNRs with a broad range of physiochemical properties; however, this is achieved at the cost of synthetic robustness and scalability, which limit broad adoption in these technologies. To address this, Product Metrics (Structural Precision, Shape Yield, and Reagent Utilization), measurable with UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, are defined to evaluate the efficiency of AuNR production. The dependency of these metrics on reaction formulation (reagent concentrations, pH, and T) is established and used to develop a two-step method based on optimizing symmetry breaking of seed particles, followed by the controlled extension of AuNR length and volume. Reagent concentrations and their relative molar ratios with respect to HAuCl4 are adjusted for each step to optimize these adversarial processes. Based on these correlations, we successfully demonstrate the production of highly concentrated AuNRs with targeted volume and aspect ratio while reducing particle impurities and shape dispersity to less than 4 and 10%, respectively, by employing a rationalized formulation that maximizes both product quality and Reagent Utilization. This results in a product density of 1.6 mg/mL, which is 20 times higher than that of conventional literature methods, with commensurate reduction in environmental waste products.

Optimizing the shape anisotropy of gold nanoparticles for enhanced light harvesting and photocatalytic applications

Hybrid nanoparticles (NP) of bismutite nanodisks (BSC ND) with gold nanoparticles (Au NP) of different aspect ratios (AR), such as spheres, rods and etched rods were synthesized via a facile sonochemical method. To better control the shapes of Au NP deposited on the substrate, these were pre-synthesized prior to the deposition using a modified seed mediated growth method by altering the pH and supersaturation of the growth solution. The shift in the peak position and shape of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption band associated with fine-tuning of the shape of Au NP, led to enhanced light harvesting capabilities of the hybrid. Introducing shape anisotropy in the NP brought about narrowing of bandgap and lowering of PL intensity in the hybrids, suggesting better electronic contact of the NP with BSC, and effective suppression of recombination effects. Hybrids of BSC with Au nanorods showed 14% improved degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye compared to the hybrids with nanospheres. With this study, we provide a novel promising strategy to maximize the light harvesting capacity of semiconductors by tailoring the AR of Au NP, for improved solar to chemical energy conversion.

A colorimetric alkaline phosphatase biosensor based on p-aminophenol-mediated growth of silver nanoparticles

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme that catalyzes the dephosphorylation of proteins, nucleic acids, and biomolecules. It is a potential biomarker for diverse diseases such as breast cancer, osteopenia, and hepatobiliary. Herein, we developed a colorimetric sensor for the ALP assay based on its enzymatic activity to dephosphorylate the p-aminophenol phosphate (pAPP) into pAP. In a solution containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Ag⁺ ions prepared using a low concentration of NaBH₄, pAP mediates the growth of AgNPs by reducing the concentration of Ag⁺ ions to enhance the intensity of localized surface plasmon resonance as the pAPP cannot induce a reduction of the remaining Ag⁺ due to the masking of the hydroxyl with phosphate. The quantitative assay of the ALP was demonstrated via the colorimetric detection of the pAP-mediated growth of AgNPs in the presence of an ALP. The highly sensitive enzymatic growth of AgNPs provided a wider dynamic linear range of 0.5-225 U/L with a lower limit of detection of 0.24 U/L than that previously reported. The use of pAP resulted in excellent selectivity of the sensor for the ALP assay in human serum, yielding a high recovery rate and a high precision of 99.2 ± 1.5 % for the standard addition method.
