Large piezoelectric and thermal expansion coefficients with negative Poisson's ratio in strain-modulated tellurene

Engineering piezoelectricity at vdW interfaces of quasi-1D chains in 2D Tellurene

Low-dimensional piezoelectrics have drawn attention to the realization in nano-scale devices with high integration density. A unique branch of 2D Tellurene bilayers formed of weakly interacting quasi-1D chains via van der Waals forces is found to exhibit piezoelectricity due to the semiconducting band gap and spatial inversion asymmetry. Various bilayer stackings are systematically examined using density functional theory, revealing optimal piezoelectricity when dipole arrangements are identical in each layer. Negative piezoelectricity has been observed in two of the stackings AA' and AA″ while other two stackings exhibit the usual positive piezoelectric effect. The layer-dependent 2D piezoelectricity (∣e222D ∣) increases with an increasing number of layers in contrast to the odd-even effect observed in h-BN and MoS2. Notably, the piezoelectric effect is observed in even-layered structures due to the homogeneous stacking in multilayers. Strain is found to enhance in-plane piezoelectricity by 4.5 times (-66.25 × 10-10C m-1at -5.1% strain) due to the increasing difference in Born effective charges of positively and negatively charged Te-atoms under compressive biaxial strains. Moreover, out-of-plane piezoelectricity is induced by applying an external electric field, thus implying Tellurene is a promising candidate for piezoelectric sensors.

Biomass-derived cellulose nanofibers and iron oxide-based nanohybrids for thermal insulation application

In recent years, due to high energy consumption in the building sector and subsequent environmental issues, environment-friendly and cost-effective thermally insulating materials are in high demand to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Current commercially available thermal insulating materials (polystyrene) always pose a challenge due to their non-biodegradability and poor insulating performance. To this end, biomass-derived aerogels are attracting significant interest as renewable and sustainable insulating materials. In this work, we have developed a facile strategy for synthesizing cellulose nanofibers from biomass-derived wood pulp as a cost-effective starting material by TEMPO-oxidation, and further incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles to make a nanohybrid. Interestingly, in these nanohybrids, the functional attributes like mechanical strength and flammability were improved to a great extent and thus overcoming the limitations of the commercially available thermal insulating materials in terms of their stability and durability. Most importantly, these nanohybrids demonstrated very low thermal conductivity, as low as 0.024 W m-1 K-1, indicating the better insulating potential of these nanohybrids as compared to other conventional insulating materials.

Bonding, structure, and mechanical stability of 2D materials: the predictive power of the periodic table

This tutorial review describes the ongoing effort to convert main-group elements of the periodic table and their combinations into stable 2D materials, which is sometimes called modern 'alchemy'. Theory is successfully approaching this goal, whereas experimental verification is lagging far behind in the synergistic interplay between theory and experiment. The data collected here gives a clear picture of the bonding, structure, and mechanical performance of the main-group elements and their binary compounds. This ranges from group II elements, with two valence electrons, to group VI elements with six valence electrons, which form not only 1D structures but also, owing to their variable oxidation states, low-symmetry 2D networks. Outside of these main groups reviewed here, predominantly ionic bonding may be observed, for example in group II-VII compounds. Besides high-symmetry graphene with its shortest and strongest bonds and outstanding mechanical properties, low-symmetry 2D structures such as various borophene and tellurene phases with intriguing properties are receiving increasing attention. The comprehensive discussion of data also includes bonding and structure of few-layer assemblies, because the electronic properties, e.g., the band gap, of these heterostructures vary with interlayer layer separation and interaction energy. The available data allows the identification of general relationships between bonding, structure, and mechanical stability. This enables the extraction of periodic trends and fundamental rules governing the 2D world, which help to clear up deviating results and to estimate unknown properties. For example, the observed change of the bond length by a factor of two alters the cohesive energy by a factor of four and the extremely sensitive Young's modulus and ultimate strength by more than a factor of 60. Since the stiffness and strength decrease with increasing atom size on going down the columns of the periodic table, it is important to look for suitable allotropes of elements and binaries in the upper rows of the periodic table when mechanical stability and robustness are issues. On the other hand, the heavy compounds are of particular interest because of their low-symmetry structures with exotic electronic properties.
