Recent Progress and Future Prospects of Laccase Immobilization on MOF Supports for Industrial Applications

Laccase is a multicopper oxidoreductase enzyme that can oxidize organics such as phenolic compounds. Laccases appear to be unstable at room temperature, and their conformation often changes in a strongly acidic or alkaline environment, making them less effective. Therefore, rationally linking enzymes with supports can effectively improve the stability and reusability of native enzymes and add important industrial value. However, in the process of immobilization, many factors may lead to a decrease in enzymatic activity. Therefore, the selection of a suitable support can ensure the activity and economic utilization of immobilized catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous and simple hybrid support materials. Moreover, the characteristics of the metal ion ligand of MOFs can enable a potential synergistic effect with the metal ions of the active center of metalloenzymes, enhancing the catalytic activity of such enzymes. Therefore, in addition to summarizing the biological characteristics and enzymatic properties of laccase, this article reviews laccase immobilization using MOF supports, as well as the application prospects of immobilized laccase in many fields.

Preparation of Superhydrophilic/Underwater Superoleophobic and Superhydrophobic Stainless Steel Meshes Used for Oil/Water Separation

Robust membrane materials with high efficiency have attracted extensive attention in oil/water separation. In this work, carbon particles via candle combustion were firstly adsorbed on the surface of stainless steel meshes (SSMs), which formed a thin hydrophobic coating, and a rough structure was then constructed through chemical vapor deposition and high temperature calcination, with the resultant SSM surface wrapped with uniform silica coating possessing the characteristic of superoleophobicity underwater. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the modified SSMs. The prepared SSMs were superhydrophilic in air, and they had superoleophobicity underwater (157.4°). The separation efficiency of five oil/water mixtures was above 98.8%, and the separation flux was 46,300 L·m^-2·h^-1. After it was immersed in 1 mol/L NaOH, 1 mol/L HCl and 3.5 wt% NaCl for 24 h, respectively, the efficiency was still above 97.3%. Further immersion in the solution of dopamine and octadecylamine resulted in the transformation of superhydrophililc/superoleophobicity-underwater SSMs to superhydrophobic SSMs, and the resultant SSMs with reverse surface wettability was also used for the oil/water separation with good separation efficiency and separation flux.

Underwater Superoleophobic and Underoil Superhydrophilic Copper Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (HKUST-1) Mesh for Self-Cleaning and On-Demand Emulsion Separation

Surfaces with underoil superhydrophilic (UOSHL) and underwater superoleophobic (UWOHB) have great potential for on-demand emulsion separation. However, the fabrication of underoil superhydrophilic based on wetting thermodynamic principles is quite challenging. Several previous studies have shown that some sarcocarps are able to spontaneously absorb water to moisturize themselves and have a unique UOSHL ability. By mimicking this unique ability of the sarcocarp, an outstanding UWOHB and UOSHL membrane was prepared. We choose 2300 mesh stainless steel mesh (SSM) as the substrate, then grow Cu and Cu(OH)₂ on SSM by a simple electrochemical method, and finally grow HKUST-1 crystals via a fast in situ growth method. The whole preparation process is simple, low cost, and does not require complex and long-term hydrothermal reactions. By growing HKUST-1 crystals, the prepared surface successfully achieved the required UOSHL and UWOHB properties. When the water droplets come into contact with the membrane under n-hexane, it will diffuse and can completely spread out in 2 s. The as-prepared membrane exhibits outstanding anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties for rapeseed oil and crude oil with high viscosity underwater due to the special wetting. By prewetting the surface with an appropriate amount of the dispersion medium, it can rapidly and efficiently on-demand separate different emulsions. The separation efficiencies of water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions are above 99.00 and 97.00%. With their outstanding performance in self-cleaning, on-demand emulsion separation, low cost, and fast preparation, the as-prepared UOSHL and UWOHB HKUST-1 meshes show excellent potential for treating oily wastewater in practical applications.

One-Step Preparation of Robust Superhydrophobic Foam for Oil/Water Separation by Pulse Electrodeposition

Frequent leakage and pollution of oily wastewater seriously affect the world's ecosystem safety and economic development, which prompts us to urgently develop a highly effective, low-cost, wear-resistant, chemically stable, and environmentally friendly new functional material for oil/water separation. In this paper, a robust superhydrophobic material was successfully electrodeposited on the porous copper foam substrates in myristic acid (CH₃(CH₂)₁₂COOH) and lanthanum chloride (LaCl₃·6H₂O) electrodeposition solution under a continuous pumping circulation and rotation condition. Moreover, SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and XPS technologies were utilized to characterize the surface morphology and chemical composition information. The superhydrophobic property was evaluated by optical contact angle instrument and high-speed camera. It turned out that the micro/nanostructures were mainly composed of lanthanum myristate, and static CA of superhydrophobic copper foam (SCF) was up to 165.2° with SA ≈ 2°. Besides, the SCF exhibited a better performance with good anticorrosion, excellent chemical stability, and outstanding mechanical stability. Furthermore, the SCF can achieve up to 98.6% oil/water separation efficiency. More importantly, by employing this novel processing method, it can effectively save time and provide a promising potential way to make denser and thicker foams for continuous oil/water separation and may be easily applied to other conductive metal matrix materials.

Fabrication of a micro/nanoscaled hierarchical structure surface on brass with anti-icing and self-cleaning properties
