Organic Compounds as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in HCl Solution: A Comprehensive Review

Most studies on the corrosion inhibition performance of organic molecules and (nano)materials were conducted within “carbon steel/1.0 M HCl” solution system using similar experimental and theoretical methods. As such, the numerous research findings in this system are sufficient to conduct comparative studies to select the best-suited inhibitor type that generally refers to a type of inhibitor with low concentration/high inhibition efficiency, nontoxic properties, and a simple and cost-economic synthesis process. Before data collection, to help readers have a clear understanding of some crucial elements for the evaluation of corrosion inhibition performance, we introduced the mainstay of corrosion inhibitors studies involved, including the corrosion and inhibition mechanism of carbon steel/HCl solution systems, evaluation methods of corrosion inhibition efficiency, adsorption isotherm models, adsorption thermodynamic parameters QC calculations, MD/MC simulations, and the main characterization techniques used. In the classification and statistical analysis section, organic compounds or (nano)materials as corrosion inhibitors were classified into six types according to their molecular structural characteristics, molecular size, and compound source, including drug molecules, ionic liquids, surfactants, plant extracts, polymers, and polymeric nanoparticles. We outlined the important conclusions obtained from recent literature and listed the evaluation methods, characterization techniques, and contrastable experimental data of these types of inhibitors when used for carbon steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solution. Finally, statistical analysis was only performed based on these data from carbon steel/1.0 M HCl solution system, from which some conclusions can contribute to reducing the workload of the acquisition of useful information and provide some reference directions for the development of new corrosion inhibitors.

Enhanced selective adsorption of lead(II) from complex wastewater by DTPA functionalized chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticles based on anion-synergism

Simultaneously removing heavy metal and dye from complex wastewater is of great significance to industrial wastewater treatment. Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent, DTPA-modified chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticle (FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA), was successfully prepared and used to enhance the Pb(II) selective adsorption from multi-metal wastewater based on anion-synergism. In the competitive experiment conducted in a multi-ion solution, the type of selective adsorption of metals was changed by the adsorbents before and after amidation, in which FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA exhibited an excellent selectively for capturing Pb(II), while FFO@Sil@Chi demonstrated highly selective adsorption of silver. More importantly, the selective adsorption of Pb(II)S by FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA was enhanced from 111.71 to 268.01 mg g^-1 when the coexisting MB concentrations ranged from 0 to 100 mg L^-1 at pH 6.0. In the Pb(II)-MB binary system, Pb(II) and MB exhibited a synergistic effect, in which the presence of MB strengthened the adsorption effect of Pb(II) due to the sulfonic acid groups in MB molecules that create new specific sites for Pb(II) adsorption, while MB adsorption was also enhanced by the presence of Pb(II). This work provides a new strategy for exploring novel adsorbents that can enhance the selective removal of heavy metal in complex wastewater based on anion-synergism.

Synthesis of 1,8-Naphthyridines by the Ionic Liquid-Catalyzed Friedlander Reaction and Application in Corrosion Inhibition

A several of basic ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized as green solvents and catalysts for the preparation of 1,8-naphthyridyl derivatives via the Friedlander reaction. [Bmmim][Im] exhibited remarkable catalytic activity to achieve the synthetic targets, and the reaction conditions were optimized. The model product 2,3-diphenyl-1,8-naphthyridine (1,8-Nap), with carboxyethylthiosuccinic acid (CETSA) to form an IL corrosion inhibitor ([1,8-Nap][CETSA]), and its corrosion inhibition performance for Q235 steel in 1 M HCl were researched by weight loss measurements, and the results showed that the inhibition efficiency was 96.95% when the concentration of [1,8-Nap][CETSA] was 1 mM at 35 °C. The electrochemical test verified that [1,8-Nap][CETSA] acted as a mixed-type inhibitor but mainly exhibited cathodic behavior. The inhibitor adsorbed on the metal surface was further proved by surface topography analysis.
