Fabrication of eco-friendly chitosan functionalized few-layered WS2 nanocomposite implanted with ruthenium nanoparticles for in vitro antibacterial and anticancer activity: Synthesis, characterization, and pharmaceutical applications

The abundance of two-dimensional (2D) components has provided them with a broad material platform for building nano and atomic-level applications. So, 2D nanomaterials are unique because of their physicochemical properties. Over many years, graphene is a conventional 2D layered element that has significant attention in the scientific community. In recent years numerous new 2D nanomaterials other than graphene have been reported. The study of 2D nanomaterials is also in its infant stages, with the majority of research focusing on the explanation of special material properties, but very few articles are focusing on the biological applications of 2D nanomaterials. As a result, we focused on the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS₂ and WS₂, which were emerging and exciting groups of elements with display great opportunities in several fields, such as cancer nanomedicine. Herein, we synthesized biologically active CS/WS₂/Ru composite by liquid exfoliation approach. The CS/WS₂/Ru composites exhibit significant antibacterial action towards (S. aureus, and E. coli) bacteria. Also, the composite suggests synergetic anticancer action against MCF-7 cancer cells. These reports are possible to explore the innovative aspects of biological outcomes in carcinological applications.

Effect of Functionalization of Reduced Graphene Oxide Coatings with Nitrogen and Sulfur Groups on Their Anti-Corrosion Properties

Electrophoretic production of anticorrosion carbonaceous coatings on copper could be successfully performed by anodic oxidation of negatively charged graphene platelets suspended in an aqueous solution. The various platelets were synthesized by Hummer’s method followed by a hydrothermal reduction in the presence of NH₄SCN which was expected to substitute some parts of graphene structure with nitrogen and sulfur groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the graphene precursors, as well as the coatings, contained typical nitrogen groups, such as pyridinic and pyrrolic, and sulfur groups, such as thiol, thiophene, or C-SO₂. However, due to oxidation during deposition, the qualitative and quantitative composition of the graphene coatings changed relative to the composition of the precursors. In particular, the concentration of nitrogen and sulfur dropped and some thiophene groups were oxidized to C-SO₂. Studies showed the functionalized coatings had a uniform, defect-free, hydrophobic, more adhesive surface than nonmodified films. The corrosion measurements demonstrated that these coatings had better protective properties than the ones without these heteroatoms. This behavior can be assigned to the catalytic activity of nitrogen towards oxidation of C-SO₂ groups to C-SO₃H with oxygen.

Nanocomposites Prepared from Carbon Nanotubes and the Transition Metal Dichalcogenides WS2 and MoS2 via Surfactant-Assisted Dispersions as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reactions

Fuel cells are emerging devices as clean and renewable energy sources, provided their efficiency is increased. In this work, we prepared nanocomposites based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), namely WS₂ and MoS₂, and evaluated their performance as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), relevant to fuel cells. The one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) building blocks were initially exfoliated and non-covalently functionalized by surfactants of opposite charge in aqueous media (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide, TTAB, for the nanotubes and sodium cholate, SC, for the dichalcogenides), and thereafter, the three-dimensional (3D) MoS₂@MWNT and WS₂@MWNT composites were assembled via surfactant-mediated electrostatic interactions. The nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and structural differences were found. WS₂@MWNT and MoS₂@MWNT show moderate ORR performance with potential onsets of 0.71 and 0.73 V vs. RHE respectively, and diffusion-limiting current densities of -1.87 and -2.74 mA·cm^-2, respectively. Both materials present, however, better tolerance to methanol crossover when compared to Pt/C and good stability. Regarding OER performance, MoS₂@MWNT exhibits promising results, with η₁₀ and j_max of 0.55 V and 17.96 mA·cm^-2, respectively. The fabrication method presented here is cost-effective, robust and versatile, opening the doors for the optimization of electrocatalysts' performance.
