High-Performance Battery-Type Supercapacitors Based on Self-Oriented Growth of Nanorods/Nanospheres Composite Assembled on Self-Standing Conductive GO/CNF Frameworks

MnOx-based materials have limited capacity and poor conductivity over various voltages, hampering their potential for energy storage applications. This work proposes a novel approach to address these challenges. A self-oriented multiple-electronic structure of a 1D-MnO2-nanorod/2D-Mn2O3-nanosphere composite was assembled on 2D-graphene oxide nanosheet/1D-carbon nanofiber (GO/CNF) hybrids. Aided by K+ ions, the MnO2 nanorods were partially converted to Mn2O3 nanospheres, while the GO nanosheets were combined with CNF through hydrogen bonds resulting in a unique double binary 1D-2D mixed morphology of MnO2/Mn2O3-GO/CNF hybrid, having a novel mechanism of multiple Mn ion redox reactions facilitated by the interconnected 3D network. The morphology of the MnO2 nanorods was controlled by regulating the potassium ion content through a rinsing strategy. Interestingly, pure MnO2 nanorods undergo air-annealing to form a mixture of nanorods and nanospheres (MnO2/Mn2O3) with a distinct morphology indicating pseudocapacitive surface redox reactions involving Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+. In the presence of the GO/CNF framework, the charge storage properties of the MnO2/Mn2O3-GO/CNF composite electrode show dominant battery-type behavior because of the unique mesoporous structure with a crumpled morphology that provides relatively large voids and cavities with smaller diffusion paths to facilitate the accumulation/intercalation of charges at the inner electroactive sites for the diffusion-controlled process. The corresponding specific capacity of 800 C g-1 or 222.2 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and remarkable cycling stability (95%) over 5000 cycles at 3 A g-1 were considerably higher than those of the reported electrodes of similar materials. Moreover, a hybrid supercapacitor device is assembled using MnO2/Mn2O3-GO/CNF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, which exhibits a superior maximum energy density (∼25 Wh kg-1) and maximum power density (∼4.0 kW kg-1). Therefore, the as-synthesized composite highlights the development of highly active low-cost materials for next-generation energy storage applications.

A Redox Mediator-Free Highly Selective and Sensitive Electrochemical Aptasensor for Patulin Mycotoxin Detection in Apple Juice Using Ni-NiO Pseudocapacitive Nanomaterials

Pseudocapacitive nanomaterials have recently gained significant attention in electrochemical biosensors due to their rapid response, long cycle life, high surface area, biomolecule compatibility, and superior energy storage capabilities. In our study, we introduce the potential of using Ni-NiO nanofilm's pseudocapacitive traits as transducer signals in electrochemical aptasensors. Capitalizing on the innate affinity between histidine and nickel, we immobilized histidine-tagged streptavidin (HTS) onto Ni-NiO-modified electrodes. Additionally, we employed a biolayer interferometry-based SELEX to generate biotinylated patulin aptamers. These aptamers, when placed on Ni-NiO-HTS surfaces, make a suitable biosensing platform for rapid patulin mycotoxin detection in apple juice using electrochemical amperometry in microseconds. The novelty lies in optimizing pseudocapacitive nanomaterials structurally and electrochemically, offering the potential for redox mediator-free electrochemical aptasensors. Proof-of-concept is conducted by applying this surface for the ultrasensitive detection of a model analyte, patulin mycotoxin. The aptamer-functionalized bioelectrode showed an excellent linear response (10-106 fg/mL) and an impressive detection limit (1.65 fg/mL, +3σ of blank signal). Furthermore, reproducibility tests yielded a low relative standard deviation of 0.51%, indicating the good performance of the developed biosensor. Real sample analysis in freshly prepared apple juice revealed no significant difference (P < 0.05) in current intensity between spiked and real samples. The sensor interface maintained excellent stability for up to 2 weeks (signal retention 96.45%). The excellent selectivity, stability, and sensitivity of the electrochemical aptasensor exemplify the potential for using nickel-based pseudocapacitive nanomaterials for a wide variety of electrochemical sensing applications.

NiMoO4@NiMnCo2O4 Heterostructure: A Poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) Composite-Based Supercapacitor Powers an Electrochromic Device

The hierarchical heterostructure of NiMoO₄@NiMnCo₂O₄ (NMO@NMCO) with furry structures of NMCO juxtaposed with NMO nanowires are endowed with multiple electrochemically active and accessible sites for ion storage, thus delivering an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 2706 F g^-1, nearly two-fold times greater than that of sole NMCO. Electrodeposition of an overlayer of a highly robust and electrically conducting polymer, poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT), not only improves the energy storage performance but also assists the binary oxide cathode in retaining its structural integrity during redox cycling. Coupling with an anode of porous flaky carbon (FC) derived from groundnut shells results in an asymmetric supercapacitor of FC//PProDOT@NiMoO₄@NiMnCo₂O₄, which delivers an outstanding capacitance of 552 F g^-1, energy and power density ranges of 172-40 Wh kg^-1 and 0.75-10 kW kg^-1, respectively, and a remarkable cycle life of 50 000 cycles, with ∼97.8% capacitance retention, over an operational voltage window of 1.5 V. From an application perspective, the charged supercapacitor was connected to a complementary coloring reversible electrochromic device (ECD) of Prussian blue//PProDOT, and the ECD state transformed from a pale-blue to a deep blue hue, thus signaling the efficient utilization of energy stored in the supercapacitor. The energy-saving attribute of the ECD was realized in terms of an integrated visible-light modulation of 39% that accompanied the optical transition. Deployment of low-cost devices at homes and commercial spaces, capable of storing and saving energy, is the way forward, and this is one significant step in this direction.
