Modification of bismuth film and poly(L-hydroxyproline) onto a screen-printed graphene electrode: A step towards a non-enzymatic platform for determining L-hydroxyproline in human urine samples

A novel sensing material for L-hydroxyproline (Hyp) detection was developed by synthesizing a bismuth film (BiF) and poly(L-hydroxyproline) (Poly(Hyp)) on a screen-printed graphene electrode (SPGE). Initially, the BiF electrodeposition was produced on the SPGE surface, followed by the Poly(Hyp) electropolymerization, resulting in the obtained Poly(Hyp)/BiF/SPGE. The morphology of a sponge-like thin film of Poly(Hyp)/BiF on SPGE had uniform nanometer-sized cavities on the graphene surface, offering a large electroactive area for interaction with the target substance. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry was used to examine the sensing performance of the proposed sensor, which revealed that the Poly(Hyp)/BiF/SPGE had the highest response toward Hyp detection. This was attributed to BiF and Poly(Hyp) can facilitate the transfer of electrons at an electrode/solution interface, resulting in an effective sensor for the detection of Hyp. Under the optimal conditions, the quantification of the proposed sensor was found to be linearly related to Hyp concentrations in the range of 0.01-5.0 mM with a limit of detection of 9.2 μM. Moreover, the interference of other substances detected in biological fluids showed no effect based on the ±5% error, indicating good selectivity for Hyp detection. In real applications, the proposed assay successfully analyzed Hyp in human urine samples, yielding satisfactory results with recoveries in the acceptable range of 98%-102%. Therefore, this facilely synthesized approach could be a suitable candidate to obtain a material to fabricate a new sensor for the measurement of Hyp, an important biomarker in the human body.

Enhancing uric acid electrochemical detection with copper ion-activated mini protein mimicking uricase within ZIF-8: response surface methodology (RSM) optimization

This study aims to investigate the influence of copper(II) ions as a cofactor on the electrochemical performance of a biocomposite consisting of a mini protein mimicking uricase (mp20) and zeolitic immidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for the detection of uric acid. A central composite design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the independent investigation, including pH, deposition potential, and deposition time, while the current response resulting from the electrocatalytic oxidation of uric acid was used as the response. The statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a good correlation between the experimental and predicted data, with a residual standard error percentage (RSE%) of less than 2% for predicting optimal conditions. The synergistic effect of the nanoporous ZIF-8 host, Cu(II)-activated mp20, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer resulted in a highly sensitive biosensor with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.21 μM and a reproducibility of the response (RSD = 0.63%). The Cu(II)-activated mp20@ZIF-8/rGO/SPCE was highly selective in the presence of common interferents, and the fabricated layer exhibited remarkable stability with signal changes below 4.15% after 60 days. The biosensor's reliable performance was confirmed through real sample analyses of human serum and urine, with comparable recovery values to conventional HPLC.

Sensitive and selective determination of vitamin B2 in non-alcoholic beverage and milk samples at poly (glutamic acid)/zinc oxide nanoparticles modified carbon paste electrode

Background

The deficiency of vitamin B2 can lead to many health problems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a sensitive, selective and fast method for the determination of vitamin B2 in food samples. In this work, a sensitive, selective and low-cost electrochemical sensor was developed using poly (glutamic acid) and Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for vitamin B2 in non-alcoholic beverage and milk samples.

Methods

The modification of the electrode surface was carried out by electropolymerization of glutamic acid on ZnO NPs–carbon paste electrode (ZnO NPS–CPE). The prepared electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). CV and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of vitamin B2 at the modified electrode. The effect of various parameters such as amount of ZnO NPs, polymerization cycle, concentration of the monomer, pH, scan rate and accumulation time were optimized to obtain maximum sensitivity at the modified electrode.

Results

The developed sensor showed high electrocatalytic activity towards vitamin B2. Under the optimized conditions, the developed sensor showed a linear response in the range 0.005–10 µM with a low detection limit of (LOD) 0.0007 ± 0.00001 µM and high sensitivity of 21.53 µA/µM.

Conclusions

A reproducible, repeatable, stable and selective sensor was successfully applied for the quantification of vitamin B2 in beverage and milk samples with acceptable recoveries in the range of 88–101%.

An application of miniaturized electrochemical sensing for determination of arsenic in herbal medicines

This study aimed to create a miniaturized electrochemical platform for detecting As(III) contamination in herbal medicines. To reduce the operational steps of modification and determination, only a single drop of mixed standard Au(III) and sample solution is proposed to perform the electrochemical measurements using a screen-printed graphene electrode (SPGE). Square wave anodic stripping voltammetry was employed to integrate the simultaneous modification and determination processes. To perform the measurement, As(III) and Au(III) migrate to the SPGE surface while the reduction potential is held at -0.5 V, forming an Au-As intermetallic alloy. Then, As is stripped off for the electrochemical determination of As(III). The total assay time is less than 3 min. Under suitable conditions, the electrochemical sensing system can detect As(III) at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 ppm, with a limit of quantification and limit of detection of 0.1 and 0.03 ppm, respectively. The applicability and accuracy of the proposed sensor were verified by determining As(III) in herbal medicinal samples, and they were found to be in line with the standard method (ICP-OES). The benefits of simple operation, rapid detection, portability, and low cost (<1 USD) make this a more powerful tool for routine monitoring and on-site analysis applications.

Development of an unmodified screen-printed graphene electrode for nonenzymatic histamine detection

The high requirement for food quality control has inspired the creation of high-performance sensing, cost-effectiveness, and ease to use. Therefore, the aim of this work is to develop nonenzymatic electrochemical platforms for direct detection of histamine using unmodified screen-printed graphene electrodes (SPGEs) for their applications such as evaluation of fish freshness. In alkaline media (0.2 M NaOH), unmodified SPGEs showed a very low oxidation potential of histamine at +0.58 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) avoiding perturbations from other biogenic amines. The developed method offers an excellent selectivity, sensitivity (a limit of detection (at 3SD/slope) of 0.62 mg L^-1) and wide working linear range (5-100 mg L^-1) for histamine detection. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied to detect histamine in canned fish samples with recovery values ranging from 90.72% to 101.21%. Therefore, this newly proposed method is promising as an alternative choice for the determination of histamine in fish samples and related food products.

Sensitive, simple and fast voltammetric determination of pesticides in juice samples by novel BODIPY-phthalocyanine-SWCNT hybrid platform

The present work describes the first synthesis of novel asymmetric zinc (II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) including three boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and one ethyloxy azido moieties. Moreover, single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) surface was functionalized by this ZnPc containing BODIPY; using the azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition (Click) reaction to obtain SWCNT-ZnPc hybrid material. Structural, thermal and morphological characterizations of both ZnPc and SWCNT-ZnPc hybrid were carried out in-depth by spectroscopic, thermal and microscopic techniques. In this study, the synthesized SWCNT-ZnPc material was decorated on composite glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by means of an easy and a practical drop cast method. The modified electrode was tested as a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor in various common pesticides such as methyl parathion, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos and spinosad. Electrochemical behavior of non-enzymatic electrode (GCE/SWCNT-ZnPc) was determined via cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The non-enzymatic sensor demonstrated high selectivity for methyl parathion in a wide linear range (2.45 nM-4.0 × 10^-8 M), low limit of detection value (1.49 nM) and high sensitivity (0.1847 μA nM^-1). Also, the developing non-enzymatic sensor exhibited good repeatability (RSD = 2.3% for 10 electrodes) and stability (85.30% for 30 days). Validation guidelines by HPLC and statistical analysis showed that the proposed voltammetric method were precise, accurate, sensitive, and can be used for the routine quality control of methyl parathion determination in juice samples.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Occurrence, Electroanalysis, Challenges, and Future Outlooks

The past several decades have seen increasing concern regarding the wide distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental matrices. Primary toxicological data show PAHs' persistent characteristics and possible toxicity effects. Because of this pressing global issue, electroanalytical methods have been introduced. These methods are effective for PAH determination in environmental waters, even outclassing sophisticated analytical techniques such as chromatography, conventional spectrophotometry, fluorescence, and capillary electrophoresis. Herein, the literature published on PAHs is reviewed and discussed with special regard to PAH occurrence. Moreover, the recent developments in electrochemical sensors for PAH determination and the challenges and future outlooks in this field, are also presented.
