Scalable Synthesis of Multi-Metal Electrocatalyst Powders and Electrodes and their Application for Oxygen Evolution and Water Splitting

Multi-metal electrocatalysts provide nearly unlimited catalytic possibilities arising from synergistic element interactions. We propose a polymer/metal precursor spraying technique that can easily be adapted to produce a large variety of compositional different multi-metal catalyst materials. To demonstrate this, 11 catalysts were synthesized, characterized, and investigated for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Further investigation of the most active OER catalyst, namely CoNiFeMoCr, revealed a polycrystalline structure, and operando Raman measurements indicate that multiple active sites are participating in the reaction. Moreover, Ni foam-supported CoNiFeMoCr electrodes were developed and applied for water splitting in flow-through electrolysis cells with electrolyte gaps and in zero-gap membrane electrode assembly (MEA) configurations. The proposed alkaline MEA-type electrolyzers reached up to 3 A cm^-2 , and 24 h measurements demonstrated no loss of current density of 1 A cm^-2 .

Noble-Metal-Based Hollow Mesoporous Nanoparticles: Synthesis Strategies and Applications

As second-generation mesoporous materials, mesoporous noble metals (NMs) are of significant interest for their wide applications in catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and biotherapy owing to their structural and metallic features. The introduction of interior hollow cavity into NM-based mesoporous nanoparticles (MNs), which subtly integrate hierarchical hollow and mesoporous structure into one nanoparticle, produces a new type of hollow MNs (HMNs). Benefiting from their higher active surface, better electron/mass transfer, optimum electronic structure, and nanoconfinement space, NM-based HMNs exhibit their high efficiency in enhancing catalytic activity and stability and tuning catalytic selectivity. In this review, recent progress in the design, synthesis, and catalytic applications of NM-based HMNs is summarized, including the findings of the groups. Five main strategies for synthesizing NM-based HMNs, namely silica-assisted surfactant-templated nucleation, surfactant-templated sequential nucleation, soft "dual"-template, Kirkendall effect in synergistic template, and galvanic-replacement-assisted surfactant template, are described in detail. In addition, the applications in ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis and hydrogenation reactions are discussed to highlight the high activity, enhanced stability, and optimal selectivity of NM-based HMNs in (electro)catalysis. Finally, the further outlook that may lead the directions of synthesis and applications of NM-based HMNs is prospected.

Core-shell Pd-P@Pt-Ni nanoparticles with enhanced activity and durability as anode electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction

Pd–P@Pt–Ni core–shell nanoparticles, which consisted of a Pd–P alloy as a core and Pt–Ni thin layer as a shell, were explored as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction. The crystallographic information and the electronic properties were fully investigated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the methanol electrooxidation reaction, the particles showed high catalytic activity and strong resistance to the poisoning carbonaceous species in comparison with those of commercial Pt/C and the as-prepared Pt/C catalysts. The excellent durability was demonstrated by electrochemically active surface area loss and chronoamperometric measurements. These results would be due to the enhanced catalytic properties of Pt by the double synergistic effects from the core part and the nickel species in the shell part.

The Pd–P@Pt–Ni core–shell nanoparticles consist of an amorphous core and a low-crystalline shell. They exhibit the excellent catalytic properties in MOR owing to the double synergistic effects from the core and the nickel species in the shell.
