Turning food waste into value-added carbon dots for sustainable food packaging application: A review

Carbon dots (CDs) are a recent addition to the nanocarbon family, encompassing both crystalline and amorphous phases. They have sparked significant research interest due to their unique electrical and optical properties, remarkable biocompatibility, outstanding mechanical characteristics, customizable surface chemistry, and negligible cytotoxicity. Their current applications are mainly limited to flexible photonic and biomedical devices, but they have also garnered attention for their potential use in intelligent packaging. The conversion of food waste into CDs further contributes to the concept of the circular economy. It provides a comprehensive overview of emerging green technologies, energy-saving reactions, and cost-effective starting materials involved in the synthesis of CDs. It also highlights the unique properties of biomass-derived CDs, focusing on their structural performance, cellular toxicity, and functional characteristics. The application of CDs in the food industry, including food packaging, is summarized in a concise manner. This paper sheds light on the current challenges and prospects of utilizing CDs in the packaging industry. It aims to provide researchers with a roadmap to tailor the properties of CDs to suit specific applications in the food industry, particularly in food packaging.

A Hydrotalcite-Based PET Composites with Enhanced Properties for Liquid Milk Packaging Applications

In the present work, the two-phase mixture (HTLc) of hydrotalcite and its oxide were used to improve the barrier properties, UV resistance and antimicrobial activity of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) for their application in liquid milk packaging. Firstly, CaZnAl-CO₃-LDHs with a two-dimensional layered structure were synthesized by hydrothermal method. CaZnAl-CO₃-LDHs precursors were characterized by XRD, TEM, ICP and dynamic light scattering. A series of PET/HTLc composite films were then prepared, characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM, and a possible mechanism of the composite films with hydrotalcite was proposed. Barrier properties to water vapor and oxygen have been studied in PET nanocomposites, as well as their antibacterial efficacy by the colony technique and their mechanical properties after exposure to UV irradiation for 24 h. By the presence of 1.5 wt% HTLc in the PET composite film, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was reduced by 95.27%, the water vapor transmission rate was reduced by 72.58% and the inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was 83.19% and 52.75%. Moreover, a simulation of the migration process in dairy products was used to prove the relative safety. This research first proposes a safe technique for fabricating hydrotalcite-based polymer composites with a high gas barrier, UV resistance and effective antibacterial activity.

Carbon Dots for Killing Microorganisms: An Update since 2019

Frequent bacterial/fungal infections and occurrence of antibiotic resistance pose increasing threats to the public and thus require the development of new antibacterial/antifungal agents and strategies. Carbon dots (CDs) have been well demonstrated to be promising and potent antimicrobial nanomaterials and serve as potential alternatives to conventional antibiotics. In recent years, great efforts have been made by many researchers to develop new carbon dot-based antimicrobial agents to combat microbial infections. Here, as an update to our previous relevant review (C 2019, 5, 33), we summarize the recent achievements in the utilization of CDs for microbial inactivation. We review four kinds of antimicrobial CDs including nitrogen-doped CDs, metal-containing CDs, antibiotic-conjugated CDs, and photoresponsive CDs in terms of their starting materials, synthetic route, surface functionalization, antimicrobial ability, and the related antimicrobial mechanism if available. In addition, we summarize the emerging applications of CD-related antimicrobial materials in medical and industry fields. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges of antimicrobial CDs and the future research directions that are worth exploring. We believe that this review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in antimicrobial CDs and may inspire the development of new CDs with desirable antimicrobial activities.

Antibacterial and corrosion protection properties of SA-CuZnO@ODA-GO composite in circulating cooling water

The suitable temperature of circulating cooling water is conducive to the reproduction of bacteria, which will cause corrosion to the pipe and form slime on its surface. Therefore, the sterilization of circulating cooling water is an essential step. In this work, a new type of SA-CuZnO@ODA-GO composite antibacterial material with hydrophobic properties was prepared by ultrasonic treatment method. The composite was characterized and analyzed by SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, and FT-IR. Then, the CuZnO@ODA-GO@PU hydrophobic and antibacterial coating was prepared. The antibacterial properties and mechanism of the composite were investigated by gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and gram-negative bacteria E. coli. The result shows that the best antibacterial rate of SA-CuZnO@ODA-GO composite antibacterial material is up to 99.10%. As for the SA-CuZnO@ODA-GO@PU composite antibacterial coating, the corrosion resistance of the antibacterial coating is up to 99.99%. The anticorrosion property is due to the hydrophobic modification of the composite, which can insulate the steel sheet from water. Secondly, due to the rigidity of the SA-CuZnO@ODA-GO, it combines with epoxy resin to form a compact structure.
