Sonochemical reaction to control the near-infrared photoluminescence properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Shielding Effects Provide a Dominant Mechanism in J-Aggregation-Induced Photoluminescence Enhancement of Carbon Nanotubes

The unique photophysical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit great potential for bioimaging applications. This led to extensive exploration of photosensitization methods to improve their faint shortwave infrared (SWIR) photoluminescence. Here, we report the mechanisms of SWCNT-assisted J-aggregation of cyanine dyes and the associated photoluminescence enhancement of SWCNTs in the SWIR spectral region. Surprisingly, we found that excitation energy transfer between the cyanine dyes and SWCNTs makes a negligible contribution to the overall photoluminescence enhancement. Instead, the shielding of SWCNTs from the surrounding water molecules through hydrogen bond-assisted macromolecular reorganization of ionic surfactants triggered by counterions and the physisorption of the dye molecules on the side walls of SWCNTs play a primary role in the photoluminescence enhancement of SWCNTs. We observed 2 orders of magnitude photoluminescence enhancement of SWCNTs by optimizing these factors. Our findings suggest that the proper shielding of SWCNTs is the critical factor for their photoluminescence enhancement, which has important implications for their application as imaging agents in biological settings.

Recent progress in controlling the photoluminescence properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes by oxidation and alkylation

The functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has received considerable attention in the last decade since highly efficient near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) has been observed to be red-shifted compared with the intrinsic PL peak of pristine SWCNTs. The PL wavelength has been manipulated using arylation reactions with aryldiazonium salts and aryl halides. Additionally, simple oxidation and alkylation reactions have proven effective in extensively adjusting the PL wavelength, with the resulting PL efficiency varying based on the chosen reaction techniques and molecular structures. This review discusses the latest developments in tailoring the PL attributes of SWCNTs by oxidation and alkylation processes. (6,5) SWCNTs exhibit intrinsic emission at 980 nm, and the PL wavelength can be controlled in the range of 1100-1320 nm by chemical modification. In addition, recent developments in chiral separation techniques have increased our understanding of the control of the PL wavelength, extending to the selection of excitation and emission wavelengths, by chemical modification of SWCNTs with different chiral indices.

Highly-Selective Harvesting of (6,4) SWCNTs Using the Aqueous Two-Phase Extraction Method and Nonionic Surfactants

Monochiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are indispensable for advancing the technology readiness level of nanocarbon-based concepts. In recent times, many separation techniques have been developed to obtain specific SWCNTs from raw unsorted materials to catalyze the development in this area. This work presents how the aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) method can be enhanced for the straightforward isolation of (6,4) SWCNTs in one step. Introducing nonionic surfactant into the typically employed mixture of anionic surfactants, which drive the partitioning, is essential to increasing the ATPE system's resolution. A thorough analysis of the parameter space by experiments and modeling reveals the underlying interactions between SWCNTs, surfactants, and phase-forming agents, which drive the partitioning. Based on new insight gained on this front, a separation mechanism is proposed. Notably, the developed method is highly robust, which is proven by isolating (6,4) SWCNTs from several raw SWCNT materials, including SWCNT waste generated over the years in the laboratory.

Doping of carbon nanotubes by halogenated solvents

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play a unique role in the area of flexible conductors as they have remarkably high electrical conductivity and bend easily without deformation. Consequently, CNTs are commonly deposited on substrates as conductive tracks/coatings. Halogenated solvents are often employed to facilitate the deposition process because they dry rapidly due to their high volatility. In this work, we report that halogenated solvents can dope CNTs considerably. The study showed that the use of dichloromethane, chloroform, or bromoform for the CNT deposition significantly impacts the chemical potential of the material, thereby modifying its charge transport characteristics. As a consequence, up to four-fold improvement in electrical conductivity is noted due to doping.

Enhancing near-infrared photoluminescence from single-walled carbon nanotubes by defect-engineering using benzoyl peroxide

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been modified with ester groups using typical organic radical chemistry. Consequently, traps for mobile excitons have been created, which enhanced the optical properties of the material. The proposed methodology combines the benefits of mainstream approaches to create luminescent defects in SWCNTs while it simultaneously avoids their limitations. A step change was achieved when the aqueous medium was abandoned. The selection of an appropriate organic solvent enabled much more facile modification of SWCNTs. The presented technique is quick and versatile as it can engage numerous reactants to tune the light emission capabilities of SWCNTs. Importantly, it can also utilize SWCNTs sorted by chirality using conjugated polymers to enhance their light emission capabilities. Such differentiation is conducted in organic solvents, so monochiral SWCNT can be directly functionalized using the demonstrated concept in the same medium without the need to redisperse the material in water.

Thermoelectric Properties of Thin Films from Sorted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) remain one of the most promising materials of our times. One of the goals is to implement semiconducting and metallic SWCNTs in photonics and microelectronics, respectively. In this work, we demonstrated how such materials could be obtained from the parent material by using the aqueous two-phase extraction method (ATPE) at a large scale. We also developed a dedicated process on how to harvest the SWCNTs from the polymer matrices used to form the biphasic system. The technique is beneficial as it isolates SWCNTs with high purity while simultaneously maintaining their surface intact. To validate the utility of the metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs obtained this way, we transformed them into thin free-standing films and characterized their thermoelectric properties.
