Smart colloidal photonic crystal sensors

Smart colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) with stimuli-responsive periodic micro/nano-structures, photonic bandgaps, and structural colors have shown unique advantages (high sensitivity, visual readout, wireless characteristics, etc.) in sensing by outputting diverse structural colors and reflection signals. In this review, smart PC sensors are summarized according to their fabrications, structures, sensing mechanisms, and applications. The fabrications of colloidal PCs are mainly by self-assembling the well-defined nanoparticles into the periodical structure (supersaturation-, polymerization-, evaporation-, shear-, interaction-, and field-induced self-assembly process). Their structures can be divided into two groups: closely packed and non-closely packed nano-structures. The sensing mechanisms can be explained by Bragg's law, including the change in the effective refractive index, lattice constant, and the order degree. The sensing applications are detailly introduced according to the analytes of the target, including solvents, vapors, humidity, mechanical force, temperature, electrical field, magnetic field, pH, ions/molecules, and so on. Finally, the corresponding challenges and the future potential prospects of artificial smart colloidal PCs in the sensing field are discussed.

Tunable structural colors in all-dielectric photonic crystals using energetic ion beams

The modulation of structural color through various methods has attracted considerable attention. Herein, a new modulation method for the structural colors in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PCs) using energetic ion beams is proposed. One type of periodic PC and two different defective PCs were experimentally investigated. Under carbon-ion irradiation, the color variation primarily originated from the blue shift of the optical spectra. The varying degrees of both the reflection and transmission structural colors mainly depended on the carbon-ion fluences. Such nanostructures are promising for tunable color filters and double-sided chromatic displays based on PCs.

Colloidal Self-Assembly Approaches to Smart Nanostructured Materials

Colloidal self-assembly refers to a solution-processed assembly of nanometer-/micrometer-sized, well-dispersed particles into secondary structures, whose collective properties are controlled by not only nanoparticle property but also the superstructure symmetry, orientation, phase, and dimension. This combination of characteristics makes colloidal superstructures highly susceptible to remote stimuli or local environmental changes, representing a prominent platform for developing stimuli-responsive materials and smart devices. Chemists are achieving even more delicate control over their active responses to various practical stimuli, setting the stage ready for fully exploiting the potential of this unique set of materials. This review addresses the assembly of colloids into stimuli-responsive or smart nanostructured materials. We first delineate the colloidal self-assembly driven by forces of different length scales. A set of concepts and equations are outlined for controlling the colloidal crystal growth, appreciating the importance of particle connectivity in creating responsive superstructures. We then present working mechanisms and practical strategies for engineering smart colloidal assemblies. The concepts underpinning separation and connectivity control are systematically introduced, allowing active tuning and precise prediction of the colloidal crystal properties in response to external stimuli. Various exciting applications of these unique materials are summarized with a specific focus on the structure-property correlation in smart materials and functional devices. We conclude this review with a summary of existing challenges in colloidal self-assembly of smart materials and provide a perspective on their further advances to the next generation.

Artificial Chameleon Skin with Super-Sensitive Thermal and Mechanochromic Response

Both the nonclose-packed structure and the large refractive index contrast of guanine nanocrystals and cytosols in iridophores play a vital role in the dynamic camouflage of chameleons, including the bright skin color and color tuning sensitivity to external stimulus. Here, the nonclose-packed photonic crystals consisting of ZnS nanospheres and polymers, which have similar refractive indices with guanine nanocrystals and cytosols, respectively, are constructed by a two-step filling strategy. ZnS@SiO₂ nanospheres are self-assembled to build intermediate close-packed photonic crystals followed by filling polymers in their interstices. The nonclose-packed photonic crystal is successfully achieved when the silica portion is etched by HF solution and refilled by polymers. Excitingly, the stimulus response of the designed photonic crystal is as sensitive as the skin of chameleons due to the similar contrast of refractive indices and nonclose-packed structure. The reflection peak of the structure can blue-shift more than 200 nm as the temperature increases from 30 to 55 °C or under 20% compressional strain. This work not only builds the nonclose-packed photonic crystals by introducing a two-step filling strategy but also proves that high refractive contrast in photonic crystals is an effective strategy to achieve ultrasensitivity, which is highly desirable for various applications.

High-purity reflective color filters based on thin film cavities embedded with an ultrathin Ge2Sb2Te5 absorption layer

A thin film cavity formed by stacking metal-insulator-metal (MIM) continuous layers is of significant interest as a lithography-free and scalable color-filtering structure. Such a cavity can selectively transmit a certain frequency range of incident light, thus producing vivid transmission colors. However, the generation of reflection colors with high purity and reflectivity is a challenge because a cavity in reflection mode resonantly absorbs a narrow range of wavelengths and reflects the remaining spectrum. This study shows that highly pure and reflective colors can be obtained by embedding an ultrathin Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ layer within the cavity. Because the MIM structure exhibits a nonuniform intensity distribution across the insulator layer, the approach is to place the Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ layer in a high-intensity region within the insulator and thereby create another absorption band in addition to the cavity resonance mode. When combined with the refractive-index engineering of the metal layer, this approach leads to red, green, and blue colors having a bandwidth of ∼100 nm and a reflection efficiency of 90%. The results of the study may be effectively utilized in numerous applications, including reflective color filters, colorimetric sensors, and surface decorations.
