Ligand accommodation causes the anti-centrosymmetric structure of Au13Cu4 clusters with near-infrared emission

Substituent effect in determining the total structure of an all-alkynyl-protected Ag98 nanocluster for methanol tolerant oxygen reduction reaction

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomically precise structures are desirable models for truly understanding their structure-property relationship. This study reports the synthesis and structural anatomy of a Ag98 NC protected solely by an alkynyl ligand, 2-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene (2-CF3PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH), which features a -CF3 substituent at the ortho position (ortho-CF3). 2-CF3PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH ligands are so exquisitely arranged on the surface of Ag98 that the steric hindrance caused by ortho-CF3 is minimized but its function as a hydrogen-bond (H-bond) acceptor (H⋯F) is maximized. Such a rule also applies to inter-cluster interactions which define the stacking sequence of Ag98 NCs. When supported on carbon black, Ag98 NCs demonstrate desirable oxygen reduction activity with robust long-term durability and excellent methanol tolerance, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Symmetry Breaking Enhancing the Activity of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction on an Icosahedron-Kernel Cluster by Cu Atoms Regulation

Recently, CO2 hydrogenation had a new breakthrough resulting from the design of catalysts to effectively activate linear CO2 with symmetry-breaking sites. However, understanding the relationship between symmetry-breaking sites and catalytic activity at the atomic level is still a great challenge. In this study, a set of gold-copper alloy Au13 Cux (x=0-4) nanoclusters were used as research objects to show the symmetry-controlled breaking structure on the surface of nanoclusters with the help of manipulability of the Cu atoms. Among them, Au13 Cu3 nanocluster displays the highest degree of symmetry-breaking on its crystal structure compared with the other nanoclusters in the family. Where the three copper atoms occupying the surface of the icosahedral kernel unevenly with one copper atom is coordinately unsaturated (CuS2 motif relative to CuS3 motif). As expected, Au13 Cu3 has an excellent hydrogenation activity of CO2 , in which the current density is as high as 70 mA cm-2 (-0.97 V) and the maximum FECO reaches 99 % at -0.58 V. Through the combination of crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the excellent catalytic activity of Au13 Cu3 is revealed to be indeed closely related to its asymmetric structure.

PtAg18 superatoms costabilized by phosphines and halides: synthesis, structure, and catalysis

Reported herein is the facial synthesis, molecular structure, and catalysis of a Pt/Ag nanocluster costabilized by organic ligands of phosphines and inorganic ligands of chlorides. The nanocluster with molecular formula of [PtAg18(dppp)6Cl8](SbF6)2 has been obtained facilely by the one pot method. The structure of the cluster could be anatomized as the stabilizaiton of PtAg12-centered icosahedral core by the metalloligand of dppp-Ag-Cl, in which Cl- not only caps the surface Ag atoms but also binds the core and surface motifs. Featuring eight free electrons in its structure, the cluster exhibits high stability. More interestingly, the exposure of surface metal sites endows the cluster with counterintutively  high catalytic activity in hydrogenation reactions.

Charge Transfer Surface-Enhanced Raman and Absorption Spectra of the Zwitterionic Form of Cysteine Adsorbed on M@Au12 (M = Au, Ag, Pt, and Pd) Nanoclusters

The effect of the core atom type of the M@Au₁₂ nanocluster (M = Au, Ag, Pt, and Pd) on the normal (NR) and charge-transfer surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CT-SERS) of the zwitterion form of l-cysteine (ZWCYS) adsorbed on two different sites (D1 and D2) of the nanocluster is investigated separately in the gas phase and water. Because SERS requires the calculation of the absorption spectrum, the effect of the core atom type on the absorption spectrum of M@Au₁₂ and its complex with the ZWCYS has also been investigated. The vibrational bands that show the intensity enhancement in the CT-SERS of the ZWCYS interacting with the D1 site of M@Au₁₂ nanocluster in water are O─C═O asymmetric stretching (M = Au and Ag), NH₂ bending (M = Ag), S-H stretching (M = Ag, Pt, and Pd), CH₂ bending (M = Pt), and CH₂ symmetric stretching (M = Pt and Pd). The ZWCYS at the D₂ site of the M@Au₁₂ nanocluster in water exhibits intensity enhancement for O─C═O asymmetric stretching (M = Pt), NH₃ wagging (M = Au), and S-H stretching (M = Pd). The intensity of the vibrational bands of ZWCYS does not increase for M = Ag but decreases for O─C═O asymmetric stretching, S-H stretching, CH₂ symmetric stretching, CH₂ asymmetric stretching, and especially NH₂ symmetric stretching.

A Review of State of the Art in Phosphine Ligated Gold Clusters and Application in Catalysis

Atomically precise gold clusters are highly desirable due to their well-defined structure which allows the study of structure-property relationships. In addition, they have potential in technological applications such as nanoscale catalysis. The structural, chemical, electronic, and optical properties of ligated gold clusters are strongly defined by the metal-ligand interaction and type of ligands. This critical feature renders gold-phosphine clusters unique and distinct from other ligand-protected gold clusters. The use of multidentate phosphines enables preparation of varying core sizes and exotic structures beyond regular polyhedrons. Weak gold-phosphorous (Au-P) bonding is advantageous for ligand exchange and removal for specific applications, such as catalysis, without agglomeration. The aim of this review is to provide a unified view of gold-phosphine clusters and to present an in-depth discussion on recent advances and key developments for these clusters. This review features the unique chemistry, structural, electronic, and optical properties of gold-phosphine clusters. Advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based spectroscopy, have unraveled substantial effects of Au-P interaction on the composition-, structure-, and size-dependent properties. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations that reveal insights into experimental findings are also discussed. Finally, a discussion of the application of gold-phosphine clusters in catalysis is presented.

Thiolate-Protected Metal Nanoclusters: Recent Development in Synthesis, Understanding of Reaction, and Application in Energy and Environmental Field

Metal nanoclusters (NCs), which are composed of about 250 or fewer metal atoms, possess great potential as novel functional materials. Fundamental research on metal NCs gradually started in the 1960s, and since 2000, thiolate (SR)-protected metal NCs have been the main metal NCs actively studied. The precise and systematic isolation of SR-protected metal NCs has been achieved in 2005. Since then, research on SR-protected metal NCs for both basic science and practical application has rapidly expanded. This review describes this recent progress in the field of SR-protected metal NCs in three areas: synthesis, understanding, and application. Specifically, the recent study of alloy NCs and connected structures composed of NCs is highlighted in the "synthesis" section, recent knowledge on the reactivity of NCs in solution is highlighted in the "understanding" section, and the applications of NCs in the energy and environmental field are highlighted in the "application" section. This review provides insight on the current state of research on SR-protected metal NCs and discusses the challenges to be overcome for further development in this field as well as the possibilities that these materials can contribute to solving the problems facing modern society.

Toward the creation of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts by controlled ligand desorption from atomically precise metal nanoclusters

Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters controlled by atomic accuracy (i. e. atomically precise metal NCs) have recently attracted considerable attention as active sites in heterogeneous catalysts. Using these atomically precise metal NCs, it becomes possible to create novel heterogeneous catalysts based on a size-specific electronic/geometrical structure of metal NCs and understand the mechanism of the catalytic reaction easily. However, to create high-performance heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs, it is often necessary to remove the ligands from the metal NCs. This review summarizes previous studies on the creation of heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs while focusing on the calcination as a ligand-elimination method. Through this summary, we intend to share state-of-art techniques and knowledge on (1) experimental conditions suitable for creating high-performance heterogeneous catalysts (e.g., support type, metal NC type, ligand type, and calcination temperature), (2) the mechanism of calcination, and (3) the mechanism of catalytic reaction over the created heterogeneous catalyst. We also discuss (4) issues that should be addressed in the future toward the creation of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs. The knowledge and issues described in this review are expected to lead to clear design guidelines for the creation of novel heterogeneous catalysts.

A mono-copper doped undeca-gold cluster with up-converted and anti-stokes emissions of fluorescence and phosphorescence

We have synthesized single crystals of a highly stable Cu-doped undeca-gold cluster protected by both triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and 2-pyridinethiol (-SPy) ligands, formulated as [Au11Cu1(PPh3)7(SPy)3]+. This cluster (Au11Cu1 NCs for short) has a metallic core of C3v Au@Au10 with the Cu atom capped on one of the nine triangular facets and it is triply-coordinated to three N atoms of the SPy ligands of which the sulfur atom simultaneously binds to three adjacent Au atoms via singly-coordinated S-Au bonds, respectively. The other seven gold atoms form a crown structure by a link of three orthogons with common sides and are protected by seven PPh3 ligands. Besides the well-organized coordination, this Au11Cu1 nanocluster is demonstrated to exhibit superatom stability of the metallic core within 8 valence electrons (assuming that the 3 electrophilic-SPy ligands capture 3 electrons from the metal center). More interestingly, this Au11Cu1 nanocluster shows interesting emissions in both ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) and near infrared (NIR) regions, and the emissions display novel anti-Stokes up-conversion lasing characteristics. TD-DFT calculated UV-vis and emission spectra well reproduce the experimental results, shedding light on the nature of excitation states and underlying mechanism of electronic transitions between diverse energy levels of such a monolayer-protected bimetallic cluster.

Surface engineering of linearly fused Au13 units using diphosphine and Cd doping

Herein, surface engineering was delicately performed to assemble two new Au-Cd alloy nanoclusters, including [Cd2Au17(S-c-C6H11)12(DPPP)2](BPh4) and Cd2Au29(TBBT)17(DPPF)2. Both the Au13 (in Cd2Au17) and Au25 (in Cd2Au29) cores were covered by two identical Au2Cd(SR)6 motifs and two diphosphine ligands. In addition, their optical properties were explored to give clues on the kernel- and surface-dependent electronic structures.
