Abstract
The efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is currently limited by poor light adsorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, and ineffective surface reaction rate. Although heterojunctions with innovative morphologies and structures can strengthen built-in electric fields and maximize the separation of photogenerated charges. However, how to rational design of novel multidimensional structures to simultaneously improve the above three bottleneck problems is still a research imperative. Herein, a unique Cu2O─S@graphene oxide (GO)@Zn0.67Cd0.33S Three dimensional (3D) hollow heterostructure is designed and synthesized, which greatly extends the carrier lifetime and effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated charges. The H2 production rate reached 48.5 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible light after loading Ni2+ on the heterojunction surface, which is 97 times higher than that of pure Zn0.67Cd0.33S nanospheres. Furthermore, the H2 production rate can reach 77.3 mmol g-1 h-1 without cooling, verifying the effectiveness of the photothermal effect. Meanwhile, in situ characterization and density flooding theory calculations reveal the efficient charge transfer at the p-n 3D hollow heterojunction interface. This study not only reveals the detailed mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in depth but also rationalizes the construction of superior 3D hollow heterojunctions, thus providing a universal strategy for the materials-by-design of high-performance heterojunctions.

Abstract
The design of nanocomposites as a light-capturing system applied in photocatalytic water splitting is an emerging area of research. In our study, a simple in situ photodeposition method was proposed for the synthesis of CdS nanoflowers modified by nickel-based bifunctional, i.e., Ni/Ni(OH)2, cocatalysts. The introduction of cocatalysts has demonstrated a notable enhancement in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency of CdS. The quantity of cocatalysts supported on CdS played an important role in governing the light absorption capability and photocatalytic efficacy. Ni-CdS-10 showed the best photocatalytic activity of 30.51 mmol g-1 h-1, which was 1.8 times and 2.6 times higher activity than Pt-CdS-1 wt % and pure CdS, respectively. Mechanism studies with UV-vis DRS, photoluminescence, and Mott-Schottky plots revealed the intrinsic electric field created at the p-n Ni(OH)2/CdS junctions, which can effectively implement the transport and separation of photoinduced carriers. From linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and DFT calculation, both Ni(OH)2 and Ni can effectively decrease the Gibbs free energies of hydrogen adsorption and reduce the overpotential of hydrogen evolution. As a result, the efficiency of generating H2 through photocatalysis experienced significant improvement, and the participation of bifunctional cocatalysts further reduced the photocorrosion of CdS, enhanced stability, improved low price, and efficient photocatalyst production.

Abstract
Engineering the spatial separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers has been one of the most enduring research topics in the field of photocatalysis due to its crucial role in determining the performances of photocatalysts. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, Ti3C2Tx MXene is coupled with a typical heterojunction of TiO2@CdS through a co-assembly strategy to boost electron pumping towards improving the photocatalytic efficiency. In addition to the band alignment-mediated electron transfer in TiO2@CdS-Ti3C2Tx heterojunctions, the plasmon-induced electric field enhancement of Ti3C2Tx is found to cooperate with the electron-reservoir role of Ti3C2Tx to extract photoinduced electrons. The synergistic dual functions of Ti3C2Tx promote multichannel electron transfer in TiO2@CdS-Ti3C2Tx hybrids to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. These results intuitively show that there is a wide scope to manipulate the spatial separation and transfer of photoinduced electrons by cultivating the fertile ground of Ti3C2Tx toward boosting the efficiency of solar-to-chemical conversion.

Abstract
Solar driven water-to-hydrogen conversion is a promising technology for the typical sustainable production mode, so increasing efforts are being devoted to exploit high-performance photocatalytic materials. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) is widely used to prepare highly active photocatalysts owing to its merits of broadband-light harvesting and feasible band structure. However, the slow photo-carriers' migration in CdS body structure generally results in high-frequency carriers recombination, which leads to unsatisfied photoactivity. Metallic single-atom surface decoration is an effective method to build the strong metal-support interaction for promotion of photo-carriers' migration. Herein, a simple light-induced reduction procedure was proposed to decorate single-atomic Pt on the surface of CdS nanoparticles for highly photocatalytic HER activity. Research showed that the synergetic metal (Pt)-semiconductor (CdS) interaction significantly promoted the body-to-surface (BTS) photo-carriers' migration of CdS, thereby the high light-to-fuel conversion efficiency (AQY500 nm = 25.70%) and 13.5-fold greater simulated sunlight driven HER rate of bare CdS was achieved by this CdS-Pt nano-photocatalyst. Based on the photo-electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculations, the remarkably improved HER photoactivity can be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting, promoted BTS electron migration and reduced reaction energy barriers. This study provides a facile procedure to obtain CdS based photocatalyst with metallic single-atom sites for high-performance HER photocatalysis.

Abstract
Metal selenide semiconductors have been rarely used for photocatalytic water splitting because of their poor stability and severe photocorrosion properties. Hence, designing stable metal selenides with suitable bandgap energies has considerable practical significance in photocatalytic H2 evolution. In this work, a novel series of ZnxCd1-xSe (x = 0 ∼ 1) with tunable band structure were fabricated through a simple solvothermal method. Impressively, the ZnSe exhibited a maximum H2 production rate of 1056 µmol g-1h-1, which was higher than that of CdSe and ZnxCd1-xSe solid solutions. Such visible-light photoactivity for water reduction to H2 was attained even after 6 cycling photocatalytic experiments. Moreover, the two-dimensional (2D) Ni2P nanosheets act as a high-efficiency cocatalyst integrated with ZnxCd1-xSe semiconductor to boost photocatalytic H2 generation performance. The optimal 8% Ni2P/ZnSe composites displayed excellent cycling stability and superior photocatalytic H2 evolution performance (4336 µmol g-1h-1), which was about 4.1 times that of pure ZnSe under visible light irradiation. Photoelectrochemical (PEC), photoluminescence (PL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements reveal that the improved photoactivity Ni2P/ZnSe photocatalysts were ascribed to the effective separation and migration of photoinduced carriers. The present work paves a pathway to explore the fabrication of ZnxCd1-xSe solid solutions and the hybridization of 2D transition metal phosphides nanosheets toward photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Designing low-cost, environment friendly, and highly active photocatalysts for water splitting is a promising path toward relieving energy issues. Herein, one-dimensional (1D) cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorods are uniformly anchored onto two-dimensional (2D) NiO nanosheets to achieve enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The optimized 2D/1D NiO/CdS photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable boosted hydrogen generation rate of 1,300 μmol h-1 g-1 under visible light, which is more than eight times higher than that of CdS nanorods. Moreover, the resultant 5% NiO/CdS composite displays excellent stability over four cycles for photocatalytic hydrogen production. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of the 2D/1D NiO/CdS heterojunction can be attributed to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers driven from the formation of p-n NiO/CdS heterojunction. This study paves a new way to develop 2D p-type NiO nanosheets-decorated n-type semiconductor photocatalysts for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Using photocatalysis to produce clean H2 energy has been considered as one of the ideal strategies to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this work, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used as a guide to determine the experimental scheme of surface modification of Cu2O with Cu3P. With Cu2O as the core and Cu3P as the shell, the precursor was constructed by electrostatic self-assembly at first. After secondary calcination, Cu97P3 was formed from the compact interface between Cu2O and Cu3P, thus the 3D hierarchical structure of Cu-O-P(Cu2O@Cu97P3@Cu3P) was successfully constructed. The generation of Cu97P3 significantly increases the photocatalytic H2 production of Cu2O@Cu97P3@Cu3P under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the composite with optimal ratio increased about 17 times as much as that of pure Cu2O. The separation and transportation efficiency of its photogenerated charges has been significantly improved. The 3D hierarchical core-shell structure is not only beneficial to strengthen the interface contact between different semiconductors but also to improve the transferability of photogenerated electrons. Through a series of experimental results, the strategy has proved to be successful that Cu3P was introduced onto the surface of the Cu2O octahedron to change the adsorption free energy of H atoms, reduce the overpotential of hydrogen evolution, and increase the active sites of hydrogen production. At the same time, the isolated interfaces are integrated by calcination to obtain Cu97P3 bridged substances derived from the interfaces. The presence of Cu97P3 establishes a new fast channel for electron flow between semiconductors, significantly accelerates the transfer of electrons, and ultimately improves the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This work provides new insights into the design and flexible synthesis of inexpensive copper-based nano-photocatalysts.
