Tuning exciton diffusion, mobility and emission line width in CdSe nanoplatelets via lateral size

Controlling light emission from semiconductor nanoplatelets using surface chemistry

Semiconductor nanoplatelets are atomically flat nanocrystals which emit light with high spectral purity at wavelengths controlled by their thickness. Despite their technological potential, efforts to further sharpen the emission lines of nanoplatelets have generally failed for unknown reasons. Here, we demonstrate theoretically that the linewidth is controlled by surface chemistry-specifically, inhomogeneities in the ligand layer on the nanoplatelet surface lead to a spatially fluctuating potential that localizes excitons. This localization leads to increased scattering and optical broadening. Importantly, localization also reduces the rate of radiative emission. Our model explains the observed linewidth and predicts that a more uniform ligand layer will sharpen the lines and increase the emission rates. These findings demonstrate that light emission from nanoplatelets can be controlled by optimizing their surface chemistry, an important advantage for their eventual use in optical technologies.

Field-dependent THz transport nonlinearities in semiconductor nano structures

Charge transport nonlinearities in semiconductor quantum dots and nanorods are studied. Using a density matrix formalism, we retrieve the field-dependent nonlinear mobility and show the possibility of intra-pulse gain. We further demonstrate that the dynamics of master equations can be captured in an analytical formula for the field-dependent charge carrier mobility, e.g. for two-level systems. This equation extends the linear response theory based Kubo-Greenwood result to nonlinear processes at elevated field strength, easily reached in THz transport spectroscopy. With these tools we analyze the field strength, chirp, temperature and dephasing dependence of the charge carrier mobility in the model system of CdSe quantum dots and wires. Stark broadening and Rabi splitting result in strong alterations of the mobility spectra, pronounced at low temperatures. The mobility spectra are strongly temperature and pulse shape dependent in the nonlinear regime. The findings are of immediate interest e.g. for nonlinear THz generation, conversion and amplification in 6G technology and nano electronics. Our results further enable experimentalists to fit and understand measured charge transport nonlinearities with analytical expressions and to design nanosystems with engineered material properties.

Efficient 2D to 0D Energy Transfer in HgTe Nanoplatelet-Quantum Dot Heterostructures through High-Speed Exciton Diffusion

Large area absorbers with localized defect emission are of interest for energy concentration via the antenna effect. Transfer between 2D and 0D quantum-confined structures is advantageous as it affords maximal lateral area antennas with continuously tunable emission. We report the quantum efficiency of energy transfer in in situ grown HgTe nanoplatelet (NPL)/quantum dot (QD) heterostructures to be near unity (>85%), while energy transfer in separately synthesized and well separated solutions of HgTe NPLs to QDs only reaches 47 ± 11% at considerably higher QD concentrations. Using Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate an exciton diffusion constant of 1-10 cm2/s in HgTe NPLs, the same magnitude as that of 2D semiconductors. We also simulate in-solution energy transfer between NPLs and QDs, recovering an R-4 dependence consistent with 2D-0D near-field energy transfer even in randomly distributed NPL/QD mixtures. This highlights the advantage of NPLs 2D morphology and the efficiency of NPL/QD heterostructures and mixtures for energy harvesting.

Expanding the color palette of bicolor-emitting nanocrystals

Owing to their bright and tunable luminescence spectra, nanocrystals appear as a unique playground for light source design. Displays and lighting require white light sources that combine several narrow lines. As Kasha's rule prevents the emission of hot carriers, blends of multiple nanocrystal populations are currently the obvious strategy for broad-band source design. However, a few reports suggest that bicolor emission can also be obtained from a single particle even under weak excitation if a careful design of the exciton scattering mechanism sufficiently slows down its relaxation pathways. A key challenge remains to maintain quantum confinement for color tunability in the same structure, while simultaneously achieving a large size to leverage the critical, slower exciton diffusion or relaxation down to the ground state. Herein, we demonstrate that 2D nanoplatelets offer an original opportunity for the design of confined and large heterostructures. We demonstrate that bicolor emission is not limited to green-red pair and show that blue-yellow and purple-green emissions can be obtained from CdSe/CdTe/CdSe core/crown/crown and CdSe/CdS core/crown heterostructures, respectively.

THz mobility and polarizability: impact of transformation and dephasing on the spectral response of excitons in a 2D semiconductor

We introduce a response theory based transformation for excitonic polarizability into mobility, which allows an in-depth analysis of optical pump-THz probe conductivity experiments, and compare the results with those of a conventional oscillator model. THz spectroscopy is of high interest e.g. for investigations in high bandwidth and low noise nanoelectronics or solar energy harvesting nanomaterials. In contrast to simple ω scaling of estimated static polarizability, suggested in the literature, an appropriate transformation of the spectral response into mobility can be achieved in principle forward and backward due to the presence of dephasing, as we show for the exemplary system of CdSe nanoplatelets. Common analysis approaches capture the excitonic properties only under specific conditions, and do not apply in many cases. We demonstrate that a thermal distribution of excitons and transitions between higher states in general have to be considered and that dephasing has to be taken into account for a proper transformation at all temperatures. The presented in-depth understanding of the exciton mobility in nanoparticles can help improve e.g. solar hydrogen generation, charge extraction efficiencies of solar cells, or light emission performance of LEDs.

Inverse size-dependent Stokes shift in strongly quantum confined CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoplates

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are used as bright chromatic fluorophores for energy-efficient displays. We focus here on the size-dependent Stokes shift for CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals. The Stokes shift, i.e., the difference between the wavelengths of absorption and emission maxima, is crucial for display application, as it controls the degree to which light is reabsorbed by the emitting material reducing the energetic efficiency. One major impediment to the industrial adoption of NCs is that slight deviations in manufacturing conditions may result in a wide dispersion of the product's properties. A data-driven analysis of over 2000 reactions comparing two data sets, one produced via standard colloidal synthesis and the other via high-throughput automated synthesis is discussed. We show that differences in the reaction conditions of colloidal CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals yield nanocrystals with opposite Stokes shift size-dependent trends. These match the morphologies of two-dimensional nanoplatelets (NPLs) and nanocrystal cubes. The Stokes shift size dependence trend of NPLs and nanocubes is non-monotonic indicating different physics is at play for the two nanocrystal morphologies. For nanocrystals with cubic shape, with the increase of edge length, there is a significant decrease in Stokes shift values. However, for NPLs with the increase of thickness (1-4 ML), Stokes shift values will increase. The study emphasizes the transition from a spectroscopic point of view and relates the two Stokes shift trends to 2D and 0D exciton dimensionalities for the two morphologies. Our findings highlight the importance of CsPbBr₃ nanocrystal morphology for Stokes shift prediction.

Electron-Hole Binding Governs Carrier Transport in Halide Perovskite Nanocrystal Thin Films

Two-dimensional halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) have exceptional light-emitting properties, including wide spectral tunability, ultrafast radiative decays, high quantum yields (QY), and oriented emission. Due to the high binding energies of electron-hole pairs, excitons are generally considered the dominant species responsible for carrier transfer in NPL films. To realize efficient devices, it is imperative to understand how exciton transport progresses therein. We employ spatially and temporally resolved optical microscopy to map exciton diffusion in perovskite nanocrystal (NC) thin films between 15 °C and 55 °C. At room temperature (RT), we find the diffusion length to be inversely correlated to the thickness of the nanocrystals (NCs). With increasing temperatures, exciton diffusion declines for all NC films, but at different rates. This leads to specific temperature turnover points, at which thinner NPLs exhibit higher diffusion lengths. We attribute this anomalous diffusion behavior to the coexistence of excitons and free electron hole-pairs inside the individual NCs within our temperature range. The organic ligand shell surrounding the NCs prevents charge transfer. Accordingly, any time an electron-hole pair spends in the unbound state reduces the FRET-mediated inter-NC transfer rates and, consequently, the overall diffusion. These results clarify how exciton diffusion progresses in strongly confined halide perovskite NC films, emphasizing critical considerations for optoelectronic devices.

Population dependence of THz charge carrier mobility and non-Drude-like behavior in short semiconductor nanowires

We investigate THz radiation absorption by charge carriers, focusing on the mobility in nanorods and wires. We show that for short rods the mobility is limited by the high spacing of the charge carrier energy levels, while for longer wires (greater 25 nm) finite dephasing results in considerably higher low frequency mobility. Analyzing the length, temperature and population dependence, we demonstrate that, apart from the temperature dependent dephasing, the mobility becomes strongly charge carrier population dependent. The latter results in no simple linear relationship between carrier density and conductivity. Additionally their thermal distribution determines the mobility, measured in experiments. We further show that Drude or Plasmon models apply only for long wires at elevated temperatures, while for short length quantization results in considerable alterations. In contrast to those phenomenological models, i.e. a negative imaginary part of the frequency-dependent conductivity in a nanosystem can be understood microscopically. Based on the results, we develop guidelines to analyze 1D terahertz conductivity spectra. Our approach provides also a new tool to optimize the mobility by nanowire length as well as to analyze the dephasing, not by conventional wave mixing techniques, but by coherent optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy.
