Abstract
Aqueous electrochromic batteries (ECBs) have recently garnered significant attention within the realm of renewable rechargeable technology due to their potential applicability in diverse multifunctional devices featuring visible-level indicator batteries. However, there exists an imperative to comprehend the underlying structural factors that contribute to achieving an elevated electrochemical performance. In this context, we have synthesized and compared WO3·H2O (HWO) specifically for heightened ECB application as against the performance of a standard anhydrous WO3 (AWO). To unravel the underlying cause, a density functional theory (DFT) investigation is carried out, disclosing a structural deformation of HWO, unlike AWO, due to Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the presence of interlayer water. It results in a fully compatible HWO ion host to devise a zinc-ion aqueous electrolyte electrochromic battery, exhibiting superior redox reactivity, optical modulation (50%), capacity (200 mAh/m2), and cyclic stability. To glean insights into the dynamic structural alterations during the intercalation and deintercalation processes of Zn2+, ex situ X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies are carried out. These investigations culminate in the determination that HWO films are better suited for the application than their AWO counterparts. This finding holds promise for advancing the applications of ECBs and represents a significant step forward in this field.

Abstract
Given the serious harm of toxic phenol to human health and the ecological environment, it is urgent to develop an efficient, low-cost and sensitive nanoenzyme-based method to monitor phenol. MOF-derived nanozyme has attracted wide interest due to its hollow polyhedra structure and porous micro-nano frameworks. However, it is still a great challenge to synthesize MOF-derived multimetal synergistic catalytic nanoenzymes in large quantities with low cost. Herein, we reported the synthetic strategy of porous hollow CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs with ZIF-67 as templates through a facile solvothermal reaction. The prepared trimetallic catalyst exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity to trigger the oxidative coupling reaction of 4-AAP and phenol in the presence of H2O2. The visual detection platform for phenol based on CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs is constructed, and satisfactory results are obtained. The Km value for CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs (0.21 mM) is lower than that of HRP (0.43 mM) with TMB as the chromogenic substrate. Because of the synergistic effect of peroxidase-like activity and citric acid functionalization, the built colorimetric sensor displayed a good linear response to phenol from 1 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.163 μM (3σ/slope). Additionally, the CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs-based visual detection platform possesses high-chemical stability and excellent reusability, which can greatly improve economic benefits in practical applications.

Abstract
Non-noble transition metal hydroxides have been widely used in electrochemical devices because of low cost and multiple redox states. In particular, self-supported porous transition metal hydroxides are used to improve the electrical conductivity, as well as achieving fast electron and mass transfer and a large effective surface area. Herein, we introduce facile synthesis of self-supported porous transition metal hydroxides using a poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) film. We used metal cyanide as a transition metal precursor capable of forming metal hydroxide anions in aqueous solution, which is the seed for transition metal hydroxides. To increase the coordination between P4VP and the transition metal cyanide precursors, we dissolved the precursors in buffer solutions with various pH. When the P4VP film was immersed in the precursor solution with lower pH, the metal cyanide precursors were sufficiently coordinated with the protonated nitrogen in P4VP. When reactive ion etching was performed on the precursor-containing P4VP film, the P4VP region without coordination was etched out and became pores. Then, the coordinated precursors were aggregated as metal hydroxide seeds and became the metal hydroxide backbone, resulting in the formation of porous transition metal hydroxide structures. We successfully fabricated various self-supported porous transition metal hydroxides (Ni(OH)2, Co(OH)2, and FeOOH). Finally, we prepared a pseudo-capacitor based on self-supported porous Ni(OH)2, which showed a good specific capacitance (780 F g-1 at 5 A g-1).

Abstract
Interface engineering of heterostructures has proven a promising strategy to effectively modulate their physicochemical properties and further improve the electrochemical performance for various applications. In this context related research of the newly proposed amorphous-crystalline heterostructures have lately surged since they combine the superior advantages of amorphous- and crystalline-phase structures, showing unusual atomic arrangements in heterointerfaces. Nonetheless, there has been much less efforts in systematic analysis and summary of the amorphous-crystalline heterostructures to examine their complicated interfacial interactions and elusory active sites. The critical structure-activity correlation and electrocatalytic mechanism remain rather elusive. In this review, the recent advances of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures in electrochemical energy conversion and storage fields are amply discussed and presented, along with remarks on the challenges and perspectives. Initially, the fundamental characteristics of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures are introduced to provide scientific viewpoints for structural understanding. Subsequently, the superiorities and current achievements of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures as highly efficient electrocatalysts/electrodes for hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, supercapacitor, lithium-ion battery, and lithium-sulfur battery applications are elaborated. At the end of this review, future outlooks and opportunities on amorphous-crystalline heterostructures are also put forward to promote their further development and application in the field of clean energy.

Abstract
Fundamentally understanding the structure-property relationship is critical to design advanced electrocatalysts for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which remains a formidable challenge. Herein, by manipulating the regulable cations in spinel oxides, their geometrical-site-dependent catalytic activity for sulfur redox is investigated. Experimental and theoretical analyses validate that the modulation essence of cooperative catalysis of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is dominated by LiPSs adsorption competition between Co3+ tetrahedral (Td) and Mn3+ octahedral (Oh) sites on Mn3+ Oh -O-Co3+ Td backbones. Specifically, high-spin Co3+ Td with stronger Co-S covalency anchors LiPSs persistently, while electron delocalized Mn3+ Oh with adsorptive orbital (dz 2 ) functions better in catalyzing specialized LiPSs conversion. This work inaugurates a universal strategy for sculpting geometrical configuration to achieve charge, spin, and orbital topological regulation in electrocatalysts for Li-S batteries.

Abstract
Room-temperature synthesized 3D hierarchical cobalt vanadate (Co3V2O8) nanosheet arrays on Ni foam for use as supercapacitor electrode is presented. In a 3 M KOH electrolyte, the electrode exhibits a capacitance of 109.9 mA h g-1 (878.9 F g-1) at a current density of 1 A g-1. The capacitance is enhanced to 198.1 mA h g-1 (1584.5 F g-1) at 1 A g-1 through the addition of 0.05 M redox-additive K3[Fe(CN)6] into the KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the Co3V2O8/activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor cell with the advanced electrolyte outperforms most reported Co3V2O8-based electrodes with a remarkable energy density of 55.5 W h kg-1 at an 800 W kg-1 power density. Combining a facile synthetic strategy and excellent electrochemical performance, the obtained Co3V2O8 exhibits potential for practical application.

Abstract
The ever-growing demand in modern power systems calls for the innovation in electrochemical energy storage devices so as to achieve both supercapacitor-like high power density and battery-like high energy density. Rational design of the micro/nanostructures of energy storage materials offers a pathway to finely tailor their electrochemical properties thereby enabling significant improvements in device performances and enormous strategies have been developed for synthesizing hierarchically structured active materials. Among all strategies, the direct conversion of precursor templates into target micro/nanostructures through physical and/or chemical processes is facile, controllable, and scalable. Yet the mechanistic understanding of the self-templating method is lacking and the synthetic versatility for constructing complex architectures is inadequately demonstrated. This review starts with the introduction of five main self-templating synthetic mechanisms and the corresponding constructed hierarchical micro/nanostructures. Subsequently, the structural merits provided by the well-defined architectures for energy storage are elaborately discussed. At last, a summary of current challenges and future development of the self-templating method for synthesizing high-performance electrode materials is also presented.

Abstract
Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are believed to be intriguing anode materials for Li+ storage because of their tunable composition, designable topologies, and tailorable porous structures, yet they suffer from severe capacity decay and inferior cycling stability due to the volume variation upon lithiation and high electrical resistance. Herein, we develop a universal strategy for synthesizing small PBA nanoparticles hosted on two-dimensional (2D) MXene or rGO (PBA/MX or PBA/rGO) via an in situ transformation from ultrathin layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets. 2D conductive nanosheets allow for fast electron transport and guarantee the full utilization of PBA even at high rates; at the meantime, PBA nanoparticles effectively prevent 2D materials from restacking and facilitate rapid ion diffusion. The optimized Ni0.8Mn0.2-PBA/MX as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) delivers a capacity of 442 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and an excellent cycling robustness in comparison with bare PBA bulk crystals. We believe that this study offers an alternative choice for rationally designing PBA-based electrode materials for energy storage.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with outstanding redox activity on flexible current collectors can serve as ideal cathode materials for flexible hybrid supercapacitors in wearable energy storage devices. Electrodeposition is a facile, time-saving, and economical technique to fabricate LDHs. The limited loading mass induced by insufficient mass transport and finite exposure of active sites, however, greatly hinders the improvement of areal capacity. Herein, magneto-electrodeposition (MED) under high magnetic fields up to 9 T is developed to fabricate NiCo-LDH on flexible carbon cloth (CC) as well as Ti3 C2 Tx functionalized CC. Owing to the magneto-hydrodynamic effect induced by magnetic-electric field coupling, the loading mass and exposure of active sites are significantly increased. Moreover, a 3D cross-linked nest-like microstructure is constructed. The MED-derived NiCo-LDH delivers an ultrahigh areal capacity of 3.12 C cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 and as-fabricated flexible hybrid supercapacitors show an excellent energy density with an outstanding cycling stability. This work provides a novel route to improve electrochemical performances of layered materials through MED technique.

Abstract
Ionic conductive double network (DN) sensors have attracted increasing attention in wearable electronic devices. However, their low mechanical and sensing properties as well as poor moisture retention and freezing resistance restrict severely their applications. Herein, we synthesized a fully physical cross-linked poly (N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide)/agar/ethylene glycol (PHA/Agar/EG) ionic conductive DN hydrogel exhibiting high strength and toughness, fast self-recovery, good fatigue resistance and good self-healing. Agar could form a physical network via reversible sol-gel transition, and interact with physical cross-linked poly (N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) and sodium chloride (NaCl) via hydrogen bonds and salting-out effect, respectively. Meanwhile, ethylene glycol and NaCl improved the mechanical properties, long-lasting moisture retention and anti-freezing ability. The PHA/Agar/EG gel-based flexible sensor possessed excellent long-lasting and fatigue resistant sensing properties, and could monitor various human activities stably and sensitively. Therefore, this work would provide a simple and promising strategy to fabricate flexible sensors with integrated high performances for smart wearable devices.

Abstract
Flexible power supply systems for future wearable electronics desperately require high areal capacity (Ca) and robust cycling reliability due to the limited surface area of the human body. Transition metal sulfides are preferred as cathode materials for their improved conductivity and rich redox centers, yet their practical applications are severely hindered by the sluggish charge transport kinetics and unavoidable capacity decay due to the phase transformation during charge/discharge processes. Herein, we develop a site-selective transformation strategy for preparing tripod-like NiCo-sulfides@carbon (T-NCS@C) arrays on carbon cloth. The mass loading of active materials is balanced with charge (electron and ion) transport efficiency. The optimized T-NCS@C delivers a superior Ca of 494 μA h/cm2 (corresponding to 235 mA h/g) at 3 mA/cm2. Due to the protection of the carbon layer that is derived from transformed metal-organic framework (MOF) sheath, the T-NCS@C displays excellent stability with 92% retention over 5000 charge/discharge cycles. The flexible full cell adopting Fe2O3 as the anode and T-NCS@C as the cathode exhibits an improved Ea (areal energy density) of 389 μW h/cm2 at a Pa (areal power density) of 4.22 mW/cm2 together with robust cycling reliability.

Abstract
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), particularly molybdenum diselenides (MoSe2), have the merits of their unique two-dimensional (2D) layered structures, large interlayer spacing (∼0.64 nm), good electrical conductivities, and high theoretical capacities when applied in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as anode materials. However, MoSe2 remains suffering from inferior stability as well as unsatisfactory rate capability because of the unavoidable volume expansion and sluggish charge transport during lithiation-delithiation cycles. Herein, we develop a simultaneous reduction-intercalation strategy to synthesize expanded MoSe2 (e-MoSe2) with an interlayer spacing of 0.98 nm and a rich 1T phase (53.7%) by rationally selecting the safe precursors of ethylenediamine (NH2C2H4NH2), selenium dioxide (SeO2), and sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4). It is noteworthy that NH2C2H4NH2 can effectively reduce SeO2 and MoO42- forming MoSe2 nanosheets; in the meantime, the generated ammonium (NH4+) efficiently intercalates between MoSe2 layers, leading to charge transfer, thus stabilizing 1T phases. The obtained e-MoSe2 exhibits high capacities of 778.99 and 611.40 mAh g-1 at 0.2 and 1 C, respectively, together with excellent cycling stability (retaining >90% initial capacity at 0.2 C over 100 charge-discharge cycles). It is believed that the material design strategy proposed in this paper provides a favorable reference for the synthesis of other transition metal selenides with improved electrochemical performance for battery applications.

Abstract
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries as power supply systems possessing a theoretical energy density of as high as 2600 Wh kg-1 are considered promising alternatives toward the currently used lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the insulation characteristic and huge volume change of sulfur, the generation of dissolvable lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) during charge/discharge, and the uncontrollable dendrite formation of Li metal anodes render Li-S batteries serious cycling issues with rapid capacity decay. To address these challenges, extensive efforts are devoted to designing cathode/anode hosts and/or modifying separators by incorporating functional materials with the features of improved conductivity, lithiophilic, physical/chemical capture ability toward LiPSs, and/or efficient catalytic conversion of LiPSs. Among all candidates, molybdenum-based (Mo-based) materials are highly preferred for their tunable crystal structure, adjustable composition, variable valence of Mo centers, and strong interactions with soluble LiPSs. Herein, the latest advances in design and application of Mo-based materials for Li-S batteries are comprehensively reviewed, covering molybdenum oxides, molybdenum dichalcogenides, molybdenum nitrides, molybdenum carbides, molybdenum phosphides, and molybdenum metal. In the end, the existing challenges in this research field are elaborately discussed.
