Thermo-osmosis of a near-critical binary fluid mixture: A general formulation and universal flow direction

We consider a binary fluid mixture, which lies in the one-phase region near the demixing critical point, and study its transport through a capillary tube linking two large reservoirs. We assume that short-range interactions cause preferential adsorption of one component onto the tube's wall. The adsorption layer can become much thicker than the molecular size, which enables us to apply hydrodynamics based on a coarse-grained free-energy functional. For transport processes induced by gradients of the pressure, composition, and temperature along a cylindrical tube, we obtain the formulas of the Onsager coefficients to extend our previous results on isothermal transport, assuming the critical composition in the middle of each reservoir in the reference equilibrium state. Among the processes, we focus on thermo-osmosis-mass flow due to a temperature gradient. We explicitly derive a formula for the thermal force density, which is nonvanishing in the adsorption layer and causes thermo-osmosis. This formula for a near-critical binary fluid mixture is an extension of the conventional formula for a one-component fluid, expressed in terms of local excess enthalpy. We predict that the direction of thermo-osmotic flow of a mixture near the upper (lower) consolute point is the same as (opposite to) that of the temperature gradient, irrespective of which component is adsorbed on the wall. Our procedure would also be applied to dynamics of a soft material, whose mesoscopic inhomogeneity can be described by a coarse-grained free-energy functional.

Complex coupling between surface charge and thermo-osmotic phenomena

Thermo-osmotic flows, generated at liquid-solid interfaces by thermal gradients, can be used to produce electric currents from waste heat on charged surfaces. The two key parameters controlling the thermo-osmotic current are the surface charge and the interfacial enthalpy excess due to liquid-solid interactions. While it has been shown that the contribution from water to the enthalpy excess can be crucial, how this contribution is affected by surface charge remained to be understood. Here, we start by discussing how thermo-osmotic flows and induced electric currents are related to the interfacial enthalpy excess. We then use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of surface charge on the interfacial enthalpy excess, for different distributions of the surface charge, and two different wetting conditions. We observe that surface charge has a strong impact on enthalpy excess, and that the dependence of enthalpy excess on surface charge depends largely on its spatial distribution. In contrast, wetting has a very small impact on the charge-enthalpy coupling. We rationalize the results with simple analytical models, and explore their consequences for thermo-osmotic phenomena. Overall, this work provides guidelines to search for systems providing optimal waste heat recovery performance.

Thermo-Osmosis in Charged Nanochannels: Effects of Surface Charge and Ionic Strength

Thermo-osmosis refers to fluid migration due to the temperature gradient. The mechanistic understanding of thermo-osmosis in charged nano-porous media is still incomplete, while it is important for several environmental and energy applications, such as low-grade waste heat recovery, wastewater recovery, fuel cells, and nuclear waste storage. This paper presents results from a series of molecular dynamics simulations of thermo-osmosis in charged silica nanochannels that advance the understanding of the phenomenon. Simulations with pure water and water with dissolved NaCl are considered. First, the effect of surface charge on the sign and magnitude of the thermo-osmotic coefficient is quantified. This effect was found to be mainly linked to the structural modifications of an aqueous electrical double layer (EDL) caused by the nanoconfinement and surface charges. In addition, the results illustrate that the surface charges reduce the self-diffusivity and thermo-osmosis of interfacial liquid. The thermo-osmosis was found to change direction when the surface charge density exceeds -0.03C · m^-2. It was found that the thermo-osmotic flow and self-diffusivity increase with the concentration of NaCl. The fluxes of solvent and solute are decoupled by considering the Ludwig-Soret effect of NaCl ions to identify the main mechanisms controlling the behavior. In addition to the advance in microscopic quantification and mechanistic understanding of thermo-osmosis, the work provides approaches to investigate a broader category of coupled heat and mass transfer problems in nanoscale space.

Interfacial thermal resonance in an SiC-SiC nanogap with various atomic surface terminations

Quasi-Casimir coupling can induce phonon heat transfer across a sub-nanometer vacuum gap between monoatomic solid walls without electromagnetic fields. However, it remains unclear how the atomic surface terminations in diatomic molecules contribute to phonon transmission across a nanogap. Herein, we study the thermal energy transport across an SiC-SiC nanogap with four pairs of atomic surface terminations using classical nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. In the case of identical atomic surface terminations, the net heat flux and thermal gap conductance are much greater than those in the nonidentical cases. Thermal resonance occurs between identical atomic terminated layers, whereas it vanishes between nonidentical ones. A notable heat transfer enhancement in the identical case of C-C is due to optical phonon transmission, with thermal resonance between the C-terminated layers. Our findings deepen the understanding of phonon heat transfer across a nanogap and provide insights into thermal management in nanoscale SiC power devices.

Recent advances and prospects in electrochemical coupling technologies for metal recovery from water

With the development of our society, the desire to recover valuable metal resources from metal-containing wastewaters or natural water bodies is becoming increasingly stronger nowadays. To overcome the limitations of single techniques, coupling technologies with synergistic effects are attracting increasing attention regarding metal resource recovery from water with particular interest in electrochemical coupling technologies in view of the advantages of electrochemical methods. This state-of-the-art review comprehensively presented the mechanisms and performance of electrochemical coupling systems for metal recovery from water. To give a clear overview of current research trends, technologies coupled with electrochemical processes can be categorized into six main types: electrochemical techniques, membrane modules, adsorption/extraction techniques, sonication technologies, energy supply techniques and others. The electrochemical coupling system has shown synergistic advantages (e.g., improving metal recovery efficiency, reducing energy consumption) over single technologies. We then discuss the remaining challenges, present corresponding solutions, and put forward future directions for current electrochemical coupled systems towards metal recovery. This review is conducive to broadening the potential applications of electrochemical coupling processes for metal recovery and sustainable water treatment.

Thermal diffusion of ionic species in charged nanochannels

Diffusion of ions due to temperature gradients (known as thermal diffusion) in charged nanochannels is of interest in several engineering fields, including energy recovery and environmental protection. This paper presents a fundamental investigation of the thermal diffusion of sodium chloride in charged silica nanochannels performed by molecular dynamics (MD). The results reveal the effects of nanoconfinement and surface charges on the sign and magnitude of the Soret coefficient. It is shown that the sign and magnitude of the Soret coefficient are controlled by the structural modifications of the interfacial solutions. These modifications include the ionic solvation and hydrogen bond structure induced by the nanoconfinement and surface charges. The results show that both nanoconfinement and surface charges can make the solutions more thermophilic. Furthermore, the thermal diffusion of solutions in boundary layers is significantly different from that of solutions in bulk fluid, contributing to the overall difference between the thermal diffusivity of pore fluid and that associated with bulk fluid. The findings provide further understanding of thermal diffusion in nano-porous systems. The proposed MD simulation methodology is applicable to a wider category of coupled heat and mass transfer problems in nanoscale spaces.

Controlling the Thermal Conductivity of Monolayer Graphene with Kirigami Structure

In this work, the thermal conductivity performance of graphene kirigami (GK) was systematically investigated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicate that the degree of defects (DD) on GK has a significant influence on thermal conductivity. Reducing the DD is the most effective way to decrease the thermal conductivity of GK. For zigzag-incised GK sheets, the change rate of thermal conductivity can reach up to 1.86 W/mK per 1% change in DD by tuning the incision length. The rate of changing thermal conductivity with DD can be slowed down by changing the width among incisions. Compared with the zigzag-incised GK sheets, heat transfer across the armchair-incised GK comes out more evenly, without significant steep and gentle stages along the heat transfer routes. More importantly, the GK structure can adjust the thermal conductivity by stretching, which the previously reported nanoporous graphene does not have. The change rate of thermal conductivity achieves about 0.17 W/mK with 1% stretching strain for simulated GK and can be further reduced at high tensile strain rates, benefiting the precise and variable control of the thermal conductivity of the monolayer graphene.

Charge Regulation and pH Effects on Thermo-Osmotic Conversion

Thermo-osmotic energy conversion using waste heat is one of the approaches to harvesting sustainable energy and reducing associated environmental impacts simultaneously. In principle, ions transport through a charged nanopore membrane under the effect of a thermal gradient, inducing a different voltage between two sides of the membrane. Recent publications mainly reported novel materials for enhancing the thermoelectric voltage in response to temperature difference, the so-called Seebeck coefficient. However, the effect of the surface charge distribution along nanopores on thermo-osmotic conversion has not been discussed yet. In this paper, a numerical simulation based on the Nernst-Planck-Poisson equations, Navier-Stokes equations, and heat transfer equations is carried out to consider the effect of surface charge-regulation density and pH of KCl solutions on the Seebeck coefficient. The results show that the highest ionic Seebeck coefficient of -0.64 mV/K is obtained at 10^-4 M KCl solution and pH 9. The pH level and pore structure also reveal a strong effect on the thermo-osmotic performance. Moreover, the pH level at one reservoir is varied from 5 to 9, while the pH of 5 is fixed at the other reservoir to investigate the pH effect on the thermos-osmosis ion transport. The results confirm the feasibility that using the pH can enhance the thermo-osmotic conversion for harvesting osmotic power from low-grade heat energy.

Fluid flow at interfaces driven by thermal gradients

Thermal forces drive several nonequilibrium phenomena able to set a fluid in motion without pressure gradients. Although the most celebrated effect is thermophoresis, also known as Ludwig-Soret effect, probably the simplest example where thermal forces are at play is thermo-osmosis: The motion of a confined fluid exclusively due to the presence of a temperature gradient. We present a concise but complete derivation of the microscopic theory of thermo-osmosis based on linear response theory. This approach is applied to a simple fluid confined in a slab geometry, mimicking the flow through a pore in a membrane separating two fluid reservoirs at different temperatures. We consider both the case of an open channel, where the fluid can flow freely, and that of a closed channel, where mass transport is inhibited and a pressure drop sets in at the boundaries. Quantitative results require the evaluation of generalized transport coefficients, but a preliminary check on a specific prediction of the theory has been successfully performed via nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations.

Simultaneous thermoosmotic and thermoelectric responses in nanoconfined electrolyte solutions: Effects of nanopore structures and membrane properties

HYPOTHESIS

Nanofluidic systems provide an emerging and efficient platform for thermoelectric conversion and fluid pumping with low-grade heat energy. As a basis of their performance enhancement, the effects of the structures and properties of the nanofluidic systems on the thermoelectric response (TER) and the thermoosmotic response (TOR) are yet to be explored.

METHODS

The simultaneous TER and TOR of electrolyte solutions in nanofluidic membrane pores on which an axial temperature gradient is exerted are investigated numerically and semi-analytically. A semi-analytical model is developed with the consideration of finite membrane thermal conductivity and the reservoir/entrance effect.

FINDINGS

The increase in the access resistance due to the nanopore-reservoir interfaces accounts for the decrease of short circuit current at the low concentration regime. The decrease in the thermal conductivity ratio can enhance the TER and TOR. The maximum power density occurring at the nanopore radius twice the Debye length ranges from several to dozens of mW K^-2 m^-2 and is an order of magnitude higher than typical thermo-supercapacitors. The surface charge polarity can heavily affect the sign and magnitude of the short-circuit current, the Seebeck coefficient and the open-circuit thermoosmotic coefficient, but has less effect on the short-circuit thermoosmotic coefficient. Furthermore, the membrane thickness makes different impacts on TER and TOR for zero and finite membrane thermal conductivity.
