Synthesis and characterization of metal-organic framework/biomass-derived CoSe/C@C hierarchical structures with excellent sodium storage performance

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Advanced Sodium Storage: Development and Anticipation

As a pioneering battery technology, even though sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are safe, non-flammable, and capable of exhibiting better temperature endurance performance than lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), because of lower energy density and larger ionic size, they are not amicable for large-scale applications. Generally, the electrochemical storage performance of a secondary battery can be improved by monitoring the composition and morphology of electrode materials. Because more is the intricacy of a nanostructured composite electrode material, more electrochemical storage applications would be expected. Despite the conventional methods suitable for practical production, the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) would offer enormous opportunities for next-generation battery applications by delicately systematizing the structure and composition at the molecular level to store sodium ions with larger sizes compared with lithium ions. Here, the review comprehensively discusses the progress of nanostructured MOFs and their derivatives applied as negative and positive electrode materials for effective sodium storage in SIBs. The commercialization goal has prompted the development of MOFs and their derivatives as electrode materials, before which the synthesis and mechanism for MOF-based SIB electrodes with improved sodium storage performance are systematically discussed. Finally, the existing challenges, possible perspectives, and future opportunities will be anticipated.

Ultrahigh areal capacity and long cycling stability of sodium metal anodes boosted using a 3D-printed sodiophilic MXene/rGO microlattice aerogel

Sodium metal has emerged as a highly promising anode material for sodium-based batteries, owing to its intrinsic advantages, including its high theoretical capacity, low working plateau and low cost. However, the uncontrolled formation of sodium dendrites accompanied by unrestricted volume expansion severely limits its application. To tackle these issues, we propose an approach to address these issues by adopting a three-dimensional (3D) structure of Ti3C2Tx/reduced graphene oxide (Ti3C2Tx/rGO) constructed by a direct-ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technique as the Na metal anode host electrode. The combination of the 3D-printed rGO skeleton offering artificial porous structures and the incorporation of sodiophilic Ti3C2Tx nanosheets provides abundant nucleation sites and promotes uniform sodium metal deposition. This specially designed architecture significantly enhances the Na metal cycling stability by effectively inhibiting dendrite formation. The experimental results show that the designed Ti3C2Tx/rGO electrode can achieve a high coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.91% after 1800 cycles (3600 h) at 2 mA cm-2 with 2 mA h cm-2. Notably, the adopted electrodes exhibit a long life span of more than 1400 h with a high CE over 99.93% when measured with an ultra-high capacity of 50 mA h cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, a 3D-printed full cell consisting of a Na@Ti3C2Tx/rGO anode and a 3D-printed Na3V2(PO4)3C-rGO (NVP@C-rGO) cathode was successfully demonstrated. This 3D-printed cell could provide a notable capacity of 85.3 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 500 cycles. The exceptional electrochemical performance achieved by the 3D-printed full cell paves the way for the development of practical sodium metal anodes.

Metal Selenides Anode Materials for Sodium Ion Batteries: Synthesis, Modification, and Application

The powerful and rapid development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in secondary batteries field makes lithium resources in short supply, leading to rising battery costs. Under the circumstances, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with low cost, inexhaustible sodium reserves, and analogous work principle to LIBs, have evolved as one of the most anticipated candidates for large-scale energy storage devices. Thereinto, the applicable electrode is a core element for the smooth development of SIBs. Among various anode materials, metal selenides (MSe_x ) with relatively high theoretical capacity and unique structures have aroused extensive interest. Regrettably, MSe_x suffers from large volume expansion and unwished side reactions, which result in poor electrochemistry performance. Thus, strategies such as carbon modification, structural design, voltage control as well as electrolyte and binder optimization are adopted to alleviate these issues. In this review, the synthesis methods and main reaction mechanisms of MSe_x are systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the major challenges of MSe_x and the corresponding available strategies are proposed. Furthermore, the recent research progress on layered and nonlayered MSe_x for application in SIBs is presented and discussed in detail. Finally, the future development focuses of MSe_x in the field of rechargeable ion batteries are highlighted.

Advanced MOFs@aerogel composites: Construction and application towards environmental remediation

Environmental pollution has drawn forth advanced materials and progressive techniques concentrating on sustainable development. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have aroused vast interest resulting from their excellent property in structure and function. Conversely, powdery MOFs in highly crystalline follow with fragility, poor processability and recoverability. Aerogels distinguished by the unique three-dimensional (3D) interconnected pore structures with high porosity and accessible surface area are promising carriers for MOFs. Given these, combining MOFs with aerogels at molecule level to obtain advanced composites is excepted to further enhance their performance with higher practicability. Herein, we focus on the latest studies on the MOFs@aerogel composites. The construction of MOFs@aerogel with different synthetic routes and drying methods are discussed. To explore the connection between structure and performance, pore structure engineering and quantitation of MOFs content are outlined. Furthermore, various types of MOFs@aerogel composites and their carbonized derivatives are reviewed, as well as the applications of MOFs@aerogel for environmental remediation referring to water purification and air clearing. More importantly, outlooks towards these emerging advanced composites have been presented from the perspective of practical application and future development.

MOF-Derived Long Spindle-like Carbon-Coated Ternary Transition-Metal-Oxide Composite for Lithium Storage

Fe₃O₄ is a promising alternative for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its poor cycle stability due to the large volume effect during cycling and poor conductivity hinders its application. Herein, we have successfully designed and prepared a carbon-coated ternary transition-metal-oxide composite (noted as (FeCoNi)₃O₄@C), which is derived from FeCoNi-MOF-74 (denoted as FeCoNi-211-24). (FeCoNi)₃O₄@C perfectly inherited the long spindle-shaped precursor structure, and (FeCoNi)₃O₄ particles grew in situ on the precursor surface. The ordered particles and the carbon-coated structure inhibited the agglomeration of particles, improving the material's cycle stability and conductivity. Therefore, the electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. Specifically, (FeCoNi)₃O₄@C-700 presented excellent initial discharge capacity (763.1 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1), high initial coulombic efficiency (73.8%), excellent rate capability, and cycle stability (634.6 mAh g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 after 505 cycles). This study provides a novel idea for developing anode materials for LIBs.

Cobalt Selenide Hollow Polyhedron Encapsulated in Graphene for High-Performance Lithium/Sodium Storage

Owing to the high specific capacities, high electrochemical activity, and various electronic properties, transition metal selenides are considered as promising anodes for lithium- and sodium-ion storage. However, poor electronic conductivity and huge volume expansion during cycling are still responsible for their restricted electrochemical performance. Herein, CoSe hollow polyhedron anchoring onto graphene (CoSe/G) is synthesized by self-assembly and subsequent selenization. In CoSe/G composites, the CoSe nanoparticles, obtained by in situ selenization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in high temperature, are distributed among graphene sheets, realizing N element doping, developing robust heterostructures with a chemical bond. The unique architecture ensures the cohesion of the structure and endorses the reaction kinetics for metal ions, identified by in situ and ex situ testing techniques, and kinetics analysis. Thus, the CoSe/G anodes achieve excellent cycling performance (1259 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 after 300 cycles for lithium storage; 214 mAh g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 after 600 cycles for sodium storage) and rate capability (732 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1 for lithium storage; 290 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1 for sodium storage). The improved electrochemical performance for alkali-ion storage provides new insights for the construction of MOFs derivatives toward high-performance storage devices.
