Mechanism orienting structure construction of electrodes for aqueous electrochemical energy storage systems: a review

Element screening of metal sites in Fe-based Prussian blue framework materials for ammonium ion battery applications: a first-principles study

Prussian blue framework materials are expected to be the next generation of electrode materials for commercial batteries because their three-dimensional framework structures facilitate the rapid transport and storage of ions and a variety of redox processes. This work compared the calculations of the model before and after the dispersion correction, and the model considering the effect of van der Waals force was more stable. In addition, the distances between H, C and N atoms were within the range of van der Waals force. Thus it was confirmed that NH4+ was adsorbed on the Ax site in the Prussian blue framework material (AxMa[Mb(CN)6]) by van der Waals interaction, and the charge transfer was mainly achieved by the interaction between the H atom in NH4+ and the N atom in the Prussian blue framework. On this basis, the properties of NH4+ batteries were theoretically screened for the Fe-based Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with different Ma elements (Ma = Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, V or Zn). Considering the regulating effect of different metal elements on the electronic structures of PBAs, MgFe and ZnFe PBAs as the electrode materials of NH4+ batteries are expected to show excellent electrochemical energy storage performance in organic electrolytes.

Advancements in silicon carbide-based supercapacitors: materials, performance, and emerging applications

Silicon carbide (SiC) nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates for supercapacitor electrodes due to their unique properties, which encompass a broad electrochemical stability range, exceptional mechanical strength, and resistance to extreme conditions. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in SiC nanomaterials for supercapacitors. It encompasses diverse synthesis methods for SiC nanomaterials, including solid-state, gas-phase, and liquid-phase synthesis techniques, while also discussing the advantages and challenges associated with each method. Furthermore, this review places a particular emphasis on the electrochemical performance of SiC-based supercapacitors, highlighting the pivotal role of SiC nanostructures and porous architectures in enhancing specific capacitance and cycling stability. A deep dive into SiC-based composite materials, such as SiC/carbon composites and SiC/metal oxide hybrids, is also included, showcasing their potential to elevate energy density and cycling stability. Finally, the paper outlines prospective research directions aimed at surmounting existing challenges and fully harnessing SiC's potential in the development of next-generation supercapacitors.

Confinement-Controlled Water Engenders Unusually High Electrochemical Capacitance

The electrodynamics of nanoconfined water have been shown to change dramatically compared to bulk water, opening room for safe electrochemical systems. We demonstrate a nanofluidic "water-only" battery that exploits anomalously high electrolytic properties of pure water at firm confinement. The device consists of a membrane electrode assembly of carbon-based nanomaterials, forming continuously interconnected water-filled nanochannels between the separator and electrodes. The efficiency of the cell in the 1-100 nm pore size range shows a maximum energy density at 3 nm, challenging the region of the current metal-ion batteries. Our results establish the electrodynamic fundamentals of nanoconfined water and pave the way for low-cost and inherently safe energy storage solutions that are much needed in the renewable energy sector.

A two-dimensional conductive polymer/V2O5 composite with rapid zinc-ion storage kinetics for high-power aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Vanadium oxides represent a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) owing to their abundant valences and versatile cation-storage capacities. However, the sluggish Zn²⁺ diffusion kinetics in the V₂O₅ framework and poor intrinsic conductivity result in inferior rate capability and unsatisfactory cycling performance of the V₂O₅ cathode, and thus limits its commercial-scale deployment. Herein, a unique conducting polymer intercalation strategy is developed to optimize the ion/electron transport simultaneously based on the rational design of the composite structure and morphology. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) intercalated V₂O₅ not only remarkably enlarges the interlayer distance for facile Zn²⁺ diffusion, but also diminishes the electron transport resistance by the π-conjugated structure of PEDOT. Additionally, the two-dimensional (2D) morphology enables shorter ion diffusion paths as well as a larger number of exposed sites for Zn²⁺ insertion. As a result, the PEDOT-intercalated V₂O₅ (PEDOT/V₂O₅) exhibits a good high-rate performance (154 mA h g^-1 at an ultrahigh current density of 50 A g^-1) and a long-term cycling life (maintains 170 mA h g^-1 even after 2500 cycles at 30 A g^-1). This universal strategy provides a design principle for constructing efficient Zn²⁺ and electron transport pathways within cathode materials, holding great potential for the development of high-performance and durable ZIB cathodes.

In Situ Construction of ZnO/Ni2S3 Composite on Ni Foam by Combing Potentiostatic Deposition with Cyclic Voltammetric Electrodeposition

The ZnO/Ni2S3 composite has been designed and in situ synthesized on Ni foam substrate by two steps of electrodeposition. ZnO was achieved on Ni foam by a traditional potentiostatic deposition, followed by cyclic voltammetric (CV) electrodeposition, to generate Ni2S3, where the introduction of ZnO provides abundant active sites for the subsequent Ni2S3 electrodeposition. The amount of deposit during CV electrodeposition can be adjusted by setting the number of sweep segment and scan rate, and the electrochemical characteristics of the products can be readily optimized. The synergistic effect between the ZnO as backbones and the deposited Ni2S3 as the shell enhances the electrochemical properties of the sample significantly, including a highly specific capacitance of 2.19 F cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2, good coulombic efficiency of 98%, and long-term cyclic stability at 82.35% (4000 cycles).
