Copper-Catalyzed Tandem Cyclization/Chalcogenation with Elemental S8/Se: Concise Synthesis of 3-(β-Hydroxychalcogen)benzofurans

A novel copper-catalyzed cyclization/chalcogenation of o-alkynylphenols with epoxides and elemental S8/Se was developed for the synthesis of a 3-chalcogen-benzofuran architecture in a domino process with no intermediate isolation or purification. Various sensitive functional groups were compatible at room temperature and furnished chalcogenation derivatives in moderate to good yields.

Me3SiBr-promoted cascade electrophilic thiocyanation/cyclization of ortho-alkynylanilines to synthesize indole derivatives

A Lewis acid-promoted electrophilic thiocyanation/cyclization of ortho-alkynylanilines for the synthesis of indole derivatives has been developed. The reaction utilizes Me3SiBr as the Lewis acid and N-thiocyanatosuccinimide as the thiocyanation reagent. A series of 2-aryl-3-thiocyanato indoles were prepared in moderate to high yields under mild conditions without metals and oxidants. It provides an efficient protocol for the construction of the indole skeleton and C-SCN and C-N bonds in one step as well.

Palladium-catalyzed bisthiolation of terminal alkynes for the assembly of diverse (Z)-1,2-bis(arylthio)alkene derivatives

An efficient and straightforward palladium-catalyzed three-component cascade bisthiolation of terminal alkynes and arylhydrazines with sodium thiosulfate (Na₂S₂O₃) as the sulfur source for the assembly of functionalized (Z)-1,2-bis(arylthio)alkene derivatives is described. Using 0.5 mol% IPr–Pd–Im–Cl₂ as the catalyst, a wide range of terminal alkynes and arylhydrazines are well tolerated, thus producing the desired products in good yields with good functional group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. Moreover, this protocol could be readily scaled up, showing potential applications in organic synthesis and material science.

Ag-Cu copromoted direct C2-H bond thiolation of azoles with Bunte salts as sulfur sources

A direct C2-H thiolation of azoles with Bunte salts was achieved under the combined action of copper and silver salts. This protocol could furnish various substituted 2-thioazoles in moderate to good yields. This method has a broad substrate scope and shows good functional group tolerance.

Metal-catalyzed C-S bond formation using sulfur surrogates

Sulfur-containing compounds are present in a wide range of biologically important natural products, drugs, catalysts, and ligands and they have wide applications in material chemistry. Transition metal-catalyzed C-S bond-forming reactions have successfully overcome the obstacles associated with traditional organosulfur compound syntheses such as stoichiometric use of metal-catalysts, catalyst-poisoning and harsh reaction conditions. One of the key demands in metal-catalyzed C-S bond-forming reactions is the use of an appropriate sulfur source due to its odor and availability. The unpleasant odor of many organic sulfur sources might be one of the reasons for the metal-catalyzed C-S bond-forming reactions being less explored compared to other metal-catalyzed C-heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Hence, employing an appropriate sulfur surrogate in the synthesis of organosulfur compounds in metal-catalyzed reactions is still of prime interest for chemists. This review explores the recent advances in C-S bond formation using transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and C-H bond functionalization using diverse and commercially available sulfur surrogates. Based on the different transition metal-catalysts, this review has been divided into three major classes namely (1) palladium-catalyzed C-S bond formation, (2) copper-catalyzed C-S bond formation, and (3) other metal-catalyzed C-S bond formation. This review is further arranged based on the different sulfur surrogates. Also, this review provides an insight into the growing opportunities in the construction of complex organosulfur scaffolds covering natural product synthesis and functional materials.

Palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxyarylthiolation of alkynone O-methyloximes with arylhydrazines and elemental sulfur

A novel and practical palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxyarylthiolation of alkynone O-methyloximes for the assembly of 4-sulfenylisoxazole derivatives using S8 and arylhydrazines as the S-aryl sources is accomplished. In the presence of 0.1 mol% of IPr-Pd-allyl-Cl as the catalyst and O2 (1 atm) as the sole oxidant, both alkynone O-methyloximes and arylhydrazines are suitable substrates, delivering diverse 4-sulfenyl isoxazoles in moderate to good yields with good functional group tolerance. Notably, the phenyl diazonium salt and sodium phenyl sulfinate are also suitable arylation reagents, providing an alternative synthetic strategy to access structurally diverse 4-sulfenyl isoxazoles.
