Abstract
In this Letter, we disclose the development and exploitation of umpolung reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysts in generating tetracyclic indole derivatives with the introduction of a cycloheptane ring forming event. The NHC-catalyzed intramolecular vinylogous Stetter, Stetter, benzoin, and formal cross-dehydrogenative coupling transformations have been executed, enabling the construction of 3,4-cycloheptannulated indole derivatives in good to excellent yields. The developed protocols utilize an inexpensive catalyst and feature operational simplicity, atom economy, gram-scale syntheses, and postsynthetic availability.

Abstract
An amidoarylcarbonylation reaction of aromatic aldehydes and olefins with Katritzky pyridinium salts by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed radical relay to construct C-C and C-N bonds with good functional group tolerance is developed for the synthesis of β-acylamino ketones. This gentle and efficient approach offers a valuable style for the synthesis of β-acylamino ketones. Mechanistic studies revealed that a radical addition/coupling/elimination cascade process was involved in this reaction.

Abstract
More than 60 years have passed since the discovery of hexaarylbiimidazole (HABI), which exhibits a characteristic photochromism that produces colored lophyl radicals through a radical dissociation reaction induced by light irradiation and reverts to its original state through a radical recombination reaction in the dark. Lophyl radicals are relatively stable among organic radicals, have low reactivity with oxygen, and have a very slow radical recombination reaction rate. HABI has been used industrially as a photoinitiator to date. However, the guidelines for molecular design to accelerate the thermal reverse reaction of HABI are still unknown and remain a challenge. We found that suppressing the rotation of the phenyl groups attached to the 4- and 5-positions of the imidazole ring of HABI is effective in accelerating the radical recombination reaction. The simple molecular design strategy to accelerate the thermal reverse reaction of HABI is expected to improve the performance of photoinitiators and photoresponsive materials that utilize HABI as a photoresponsive unit.

Abstract
Herein we demonstrate a novel organocatalytic method to access multifunctionalized naphthalenes via an NHC-catalyzed reaction of ynones and o-formyl-tethered Michael acceptors. The presented method proceeds through an intermolecular Stetter reaction-cyclization-aromatization cascade and represents a rare example of organocatalytic benzannulation for the synthesis of substituted arenes by using ynone as a two-carbon synthon. The current method has broad substrate scope; postsynthetic transformations and gram-scale syntheses highlight the practicality of the displayed methodology.

Abstract
Herein, we have described a novel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed synthesis of N-substituted isoindolinone acetates. The presented transformation proceeds through NHC-catalyzed tandem imine umpolung-intramolecular aza-Michael addition followed by oxidation, while molecular oxygen in air acts as a sole oxidant. Atom efficiency, operational simplicity, large-scale syntheses, and mild reaction conditions are the salient features of this method. Mechanistic studies were indicative of the necessity of molecular oxygen in air as oxidant for the conversion of imine to amide.

Abstract
Strategies for the sustainable synthesis of redox-active organic polymers could lead to next-generation organic electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and electro-swing chemical separations. Among redox-active moieties, benzils or aromatic 1,2-diones are particularly attractive due to their high theoretical gravimetric capacities and fast charge/discharge rates. Herein, we demonstrate that the cyanide-catalyzed polymerization of simple dialdehyde monomers unexpectedly leads to insoluble redox-active benzil-linked polymers instead of the expected benzoin polymers, as supported by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization. Mechanistic studies suggest that cyanide-mediated benzoin oxidation occurs by hydride transfer to the solvent, and that the insolubility of the benzil-linked polymers protects them from subsequent cyanolysis. The thiophene-based polymer poly(BTDA) is an intriguing organic electrode material that demonstrates two reversible one-electron reductions with monovalent cations such as Li+ and Na+ but one two-electron reduction with divalent Mg2+. As such, the tandem benzoin-oxidation polymerization reported herein represents a sustainable method for the synthesis of highly tunable and redox-active organic materials.

Abstract
In this Letter, we disclose a simple and effective method to access a variety of phenanthro[9,10-b]furan and 1H-dibenzo[e,g]indole derivatives based on the design of a carbene-catalyzed intramolecular Stetter reaction followed by a Paal-Knorr reaction in one-pot. These compounds are a class of π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives containing an oxygen/nitrogen atom. The practical utility of the developed transformation was demonstrated on the gram scales and postsynthetic transformations thereof.

Abstract
Bicyclic triazolium scaffolds are widely employed in N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis. While the incorporation of a fused ring was initially for synthetic utility in accessing chiral, modular triazolyl scaffolds, recent results highlight the potential for impact upon reaction outcome with the underpinning origins unclear. The common first step to all triazolium-catalyzed transformations is C(3)-H deprotonation to form the triazolylidene NHC. Herein, we report an analysis of the impact of size of the fused (5-, 6-, and 7-membered, n = 1, 2, and 3, respectively) ring on the C(3) proton transfer reactions of a series of bicyclic triazolium salts. Rate constants for the deuteroxide-catalyzed C(3)-H/D-exchange of triazolium salts, kDO, were significantly influenced by the size of the adjacent fused ring, with the kinetic acidity trend, or protofugalities, following the order kDO (n = 1) > kDO (n = 2) ≈ kDO (n = 3). Detailed analyses of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data for 20 triazolium salts (including 16 new structures) and of computational data for the corresponding triazolylidene NHCs provide insight on structural effects of alteration of fused ring size. In particular, changes in internal triazolyl NCN angle and positioning of the most proximal CH2 with variation in fused ring size are proposed to influence the experimental protofugality order.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose an NHC-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of unactivated aldimines for the synthesis of amides via umpolung of imines proceeding through an aza-Breslow intermediate. We have developed an eco-friendly method for the conversion of imines to amides by using molecular oxygen in air as the sole oxidant and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as a green solvent under mild reaction conditions. Broad substrate scope, high yields and gram scale syntheses expand the practicality of the developed method. A general NHC-catalyzed conversion of imines to amides proceeding through umpolung–oxidation under aerobic conditions in green solvent is reported.![]()

Abstract
Organocatalysts are abundantly used for various transformations, particularly to obtain highly enantio- and diastereomeric pure products by controlling the stereochemistry. These applications of organocatalysts have been the topic of several reviews. Organocatalysts have emerged as one of the very essential areas of research due to their mild reaction conditions, cost-effective nature, non-toxicity, and environmentally benign approach that obviates the need for transition metal catalysts and other toxic reagents. Various types of organocatalysts including amine catalysts, Brønsted acids, and Lewis bases such as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysts, cinchona alkaloids, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), and hydrogen bond-donating catalysts, have gained renewed interest because of their regioselectivity. In this review, we present recent advances in regiodivergent reactions that are governed by organocatalysts. Additionally, we briefly discuss the reaction pathways of achieving regiodivergent products by changes in conditions such as solvents, additives, or the temperature.
