Evidence for and evaluation of fluorine-tellurium chalcogen bonding

In the field of noncovalent interactions, chalcogen bonding (ChB) involving the tellurium atom is currently attracting much attention in supramolecular chemistry and in catalysis. However, as a prerequisite for its application, the ChB should be studied in solution to assess its formation and, if possible, to evaluate its strength. In this context, new tellurium derivatives bearing CH2F and CF3 groups were designed to exhibit Te⋯F ChB and were synthesized in good to high yields. In both types of compounds, Te⋯F interactions were characterized in solution by combining 19F, 125Te and HOESY NMR techniques. These Te⋯F ChBs were shown to contribute to the overall JTe-F coupling constants (94-170 Hz) measured in the CH2F- and CF3-based tellurium derivatives. Finally, a variable temperature NMR study allowed us to approximate the energy of the Te⋯F ChB, from 3 kJ mol-1 for the compounds with weak Te σ-holes to 11 kJ mol-1 for Te σ-holes activated by the presence of strong electron withdrawing substituents.

Group 16 conjugated polymers based on furan, thiophene, selenophene, and tellurophene

Five-membered aromatic rings containing Group 16 elements (O, S, Se, and Te), also referred as chalcogenophenes, are ubiquitous building blocks for π-conjugated polymers (CPs). Among these, polythiophenes have been established as a model system to study the interplay between molecular structure, solid-state organization, and electronic performance. The judicious substitution of alternative heteroatoms into polythiophenes is a promising strategy for tuning their properties and improving the performance of derived organic electronic devices, thus leading to the recent abundance of CPs containing furan, selenophene, and tellurophene. In this review, we first discuss the current status of Kumada, Negishi, Murahashi, Suzuki-Miyaura, and direct arylation polymerizations, representing the best routes to access well-defined chalcogenophene-containing homopolymers and copolymers. The self-assembly, optical, solid-state, and electronic properties of these polymers and their influence on device performance are then summarized. In addition, we highlight post-polymerization modifications as effective methods to transform polychalcogenophene backbones or side chains in ways that are unobtainable by direct polymerization. Finally, the major challenges and future outlook in this field are presented.

Synthesis and optoelectronic properties of air-stable π-conjugated polymers containing both thiophene-2,5-diyl and fused titanacycle units

π-Conjugated poly(arylene ethynylene)s containing both thiophene-2,5-diyl and fused metallacycles units in their alternating sequence were synthesized and their optoelectronic features were studied by the UV-vis spectra.

An air-stable organometallic polymer containing titanafluorene moieties obtained by the Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling polycondensation

The synthesis of a polymer containing alternating titanafluorene and arylene ethynylene moieties is described. The polymerization of a 2,7-dibromo-9-titanafluorene derivative with 1,4-dioctyloxy-2,5-diethynylbenzene is carried out at 70 °C for 48 h in tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of palladium dichloride/4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene as a catalyst and diisopropylamine as a base to produce a dark red polymer. The polymer thus obtained is soluble in organic solvents and stable towards both air and moisture. In the UV-vis absorption spectrum of the polymer, the absorption maxima (λ_max) are observed at 321 nm and 395 nm, which are bathochromically shifted compared to those of a model compound of the repeating unit, a 2,7-bis(phenylethynyl)titanafluorene derivative (λ_max = 309 nm and 364 nm). The optical band gap (E_g) of the polymer is estimated to be 2.8 eV on the basis of the absorption onset, which is narrower than that of the model compound (3.1 eV).
