Exclusive Coordination between Melem and Silver(I) Ions: From Irregular Aggregates to Nanofibers to Crystal Cubes

There is growing focus on metal-free molecules and polymers owing to their potential applications in various energy and catalysis-related applications. Melem (2,5,8-triamino-s-heptazine, C6H6N10) has emerged as a metal-free material for solar-to-fuel conversion. However, its reactivity with metal ions or organic molecules has never been reported although it possesses multiple supramolecular interaction sites. In this work, we report on the synthesis of a novel metal-organic coordination framework (melem-Ag) by simply introducing Ag+ into the aqueous suspension of aggregated melem particles. Notably, as the reaction progresses, the melem disappears, and the morphology of the newly formed complex spontaneously evolves from nanofibers to single-crystalline blocks, which possess the same chemical structure, indicating that the morphology evolution is driven by Ostwald ripening. The structure of melem-Ag displays infinite nanocages of triangular pyramids consisting of melem molecules and Ag+, linked via Ag-N coordinate bonding and Ag-Ag argentophilic interactions. It is noteworthy that Ag+ is the only transition-metal cation that reacts with melem suspensions, even in the presence of other transition-metal cations (Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+). The coordination of Ag+ to melem results in metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), resulting in a quenched photoluminescence and enhanced light absorption. Exposing the melem-Ag crystals to UV light for varying time intervals results in the formation of colorful powders, which may be used for Ag-decorated photocatalysts.

Nature of cyanoargentate bridges defining spin crossover in new 2D Hofmann clathrate analogues

Chemical composition is leading among the numerous factors that determine the spin transition properties of coordination compounds. Classic dicyanometallic bridges {M(CN)2}- are commonly used to build Hofmann-like spin-crossover frameworks, but some extended bridges are also synthetically available. In this paper, we describe a successful synthesis of two very similar spin-crossover frameworks that differ in the cyanometallic bridges involved, namely [Fe(etpz)2{Ag(CN)2}2] (1) and {Fe(etpz)2[Ag2(CN)3][Ag(CN)2]} (2) (where etpz = 2-ethylpyrazine). Magnetic and Mössbauer studies demonstrated the occurrence of abrupt one-step high-spin (HS) ↔ low-spin (LS) transitions for both complexes. The spin transition temperatures are T1/2 ↓ = 233 K and T1/2 ↑ = 243 K for 1 and T1/2 ↓ = 188 K and T1/2 ↑ = 191 K for 2 with thermal hysteresis loops of 10 K for 1 and 3 K for 2. The bridging mononuclear [Ag(CN)2]- units and FeII cations assemble to form infinite 2D layers in the structure of 1. Interestingly, compound 2 forms 2D layers of FeII cations bridged by both binuclear [Ag2(CN)3]- and mononuclear [Ag(CN)2]- units. The structures of 1 and 2 comprise different types of intermolecular interactions including Ag⋯Ag and Ag⋯Netpz, which induce the creation of supramolecular 3D frameworks. The synergy between metallophilic interactions and the spin transition is also confirmed by the variation of Ag⋯Ag distances during spin crossover. The characterization of such analogues allowed us to analyze in detail the effect of the cyanometallic bridge on the structure of new frameworks and on the bistability in Hofmann-like complexes.

Aggregated coordination polymers of Ag+ with a cysteine derivative ligand containing an AIEgen

We investigated coordination polymers of Ag⁺ with a cysteine-based thiol ligand designed to contain a tetraphenylethylene AIEgen (L- and D-1). The coordination polymers, forming in a variety of protic and aprotic organic solvents, such as THF, CH₃CN and CH₃OH, were shown to undergo aggregation in H₂O/THF binary solvents at water volume fractions above 50%, where emission was substantially enhanced while the CD profile was reversed, yet the dependence of the CD signal on ee remained S-shaped for the polymers in the aprotic organic solvents THF and CH₃CN, in contrast to that in protic solvents CH₃OH and C₂H₅OH.

Discrete Singular Metallophilic Interaction in Stable Large 12-Membered Binuclear Silver and Gold Metallamacrocycles of Amido-Functionalized Imidazole and 1,2,4-Triazole-Derived N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Metallophilic interactions were observed in four pairs of 12-membered metallamacrocyclic silver and gold complexes of imidazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), [1-(R¹)-3-N-(2,6-di-(R²)-phenylacetamido)-imidazol-2-ylidene]₂M₂ [R¹ = p-MeC₆H₄, R² = Me, M = Ag (1b) and Au (1c); R¹ = Me, R² = i-Pr, M = Ag (2b) and Au (2c); R¹ = Et, R² = i-Pr, M = Ag (3b) and Au (3c)], and a 1,2,4-triazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), [1-(i-Pr)-4-N-(2,6-di-(i-Pr)-phenylacetamido)-1,2,4-triazol-2-ylidene]₂M₂ [M = Ag (4b) and Au (4c)]. The X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and computational studies indicate the presence of metallophilic interactions in these complexes, which are significantly influenced by the sterics and the electronics of the N-amido substituents of the NHC ligands. The argentophilic interaction in the silver 1b-4b complexes was stronger than the aurophilic interaction in the gold 1c-4c complexes, with the metallophilic interaction decreasing in the order 4b > 1b > 1c > 4c > 3b > 3c > 2b > 2c. The 1b-4b complexes were synthesized from the corresponding amido-functionalized imidazolium chloride 1a-3a and the 1,2,4-triazolium chloride 4a salts upon treatment with Ag₂O. The reaction of 1b-4b complexes with (Me₂S)AuCl gave the gold 1c-4c complexes.

Diantimony Complexes [CpR 2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2 -Sb2 )] (CpR =C5 H5 , C5 H4 t Bu) as Unexpected Ligands Stabilizing Silver(I)n (n=1-4) Monomers, Dimers and Chains

Synthesis and reactivity of transition metal compounds bearing "naked" pnictogen atoms is an active research area with remarkable bonding patterns observed in the formed compounds. Within this field, intense investigations on the coordination behavior of complexes possessing P_n and As_n (2≤n≤5) moieties have been conducted. However, studies on heavier analogues have been ignored so far due to arduous challenges related to low yields and moderate air stability. Herein, we present the first in-depth study addressing the reactivity of organometallic complexes containing Sb-donor atoms with several Ag^I salts. These reactions afforded twelve unprecedented aggregates as monomers, dimers as well as three- and four-membered chains of Ag^I ions claimed in the literature to be inaccessible. Interatomic distances as well as computational evidence obtained with help of several different methods suggest the presence of Ag⋅⋅⋅Ag interactions in all complexes containing more than one Ag^I ion.

A croconate-directed supramolecular self-healable Cd(II)-metallogel with dispersed 2D-nanosheets of hexagonal boron nitride: a comparative outcome of the charge-transport phenomena and non-linear rectifying behaviour of semiconducting diodes

The use of croconic acid disodium salt (CADS) as an organic gelator with Cd(II) salt to obtain an efficient soft-scaffold supramolecular self-healable metallogel (Cd-CADS) in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) media was investigated following an ultrasonication technique. The experimentally scrutinized rheological values of the fabricated metallogel not only revealed the visco-elastic property and mechanical stiffness, but also exposed the self-healable behaviour of the gel material. Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) were incorporated within the gel network to obtain a 2D nanosheet dispersed metallogel of Cd(II) croconate (h-BN@Cd-CADS). The microstructural investigations of the original gel network and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) 2D nanosheet dispersed gel-network were performed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and established the interconnecting rod-like fibrous type morphological patterns and inter-connected hexagonal type rod-shaped architecture pattern, respectively. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was used to visualize the morphological distinction of the Cd-CADS metallogel with the h-BN 2D nanosheets. The infrared spectral (FT-IR) outputs helped to identify the formation pathway to construct the semi-solid self-healing flexible metallogel and h-BN 2D nanosheet dispersed metallogel nanocomposite, respectively. Fascinating electronic-charge transportation was revealed in the as-fabricated Cd-CADS and h-BN@Cd-CADS metallogel-based devices. Furthermore, h-BN 2D-nanosheet-directed modulation of the non-linear rectifying feature of the supramolecular Cd-CADS-metallogel was observed, with the h-BN@Cd-CADS metallogel showing a greater rectifying property, implying that it has a higher conductivity compared to the Cd-CADS metallogel.

Keep it tight: a crucial role of bridging phosphine ligands in the design and optical properties of multinuclear coinage metal complexes

Copper subgroup metal ions in the +1 oxidation state are classical candidates for aggregation via non-covalent metal-metal interactions, which are supported by a number of bridging ligands. The bridging phosphines, soft donors with a relatively labile coordination to coinage metals, serve as convenient and essential components of the ligand environment that allow for efficient self-assembly of discrete polynuclear aggregates. Simultaneously, accessible and rich modification of the organic spacer of such P-donors has been used to generate many fascinating structures with attractive photoluminescent behavior. In this work we consider the development of di- and polynuclear complexes of M(i) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) and their photophysical properties, focusing on the effect of phosphine bridging ligands, their flexibility and denticity.
