Alkynylphosphonium Pt(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Features of Photophysical Properties in Solution and in the Solid State

A series of heteroleptic bis-alkynyl-diimine mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with alkynylphosphonium and di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dtbpy) ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal XRD. The Pt(II) complexes obtained in the present study demonstrate triplet emission in solution, which originates from 3MLCT/3LC states where the nature of the π-conjugated linker in the alkynylphosphonium ligand manages the contributions of each transition, and this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations. Additionally, the presence of the phosphonium group connected to alkynyl through the π-conjugated linker enhances nonlinear optical properties of the Pt(II) complexes increasing two-photon absorption cross section up to 400 GM. In the solid state, the Pt(II) complexes demonstrate emission that is attributed to 3MMLCT transitions due to the presence of Pt-Pt metallophilic interactions, and the reversible assembly and disassembly of these interactions by grinding and solvent treatment are responsible for the mechanochromic luminescence. It has been experimentally shown that stimuli-responsive emission of the Pt(II) complexes is the result of a "monomer/dimer" transformation; this conclusion is confirmed by DFT calculations for discrete complexes and different dimers with or without Pt-Pt interactions.

Hypso- or bathochromic phosphorescent mechanochromic mononuclear Cu(I) complexes with a bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether auxiliary ligand

Six phosphorescence-emitting metal-organic mononuclear Cu(I) complexes, namely four quinoline-containing three-coordinate Cu(I) complexes and two N-heterocyclic carbene-containing four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes, have been successfully developed and fully characterized. All these Cu(I) complexes include the same bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether bidentate auxiliary ligand. Significantly, four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes 1 and 2 display typical aggregation-induced emission phenomena. Their solid samples of luminogenic complexes 1-6 emit a variety of different phosphorescence. Furthermore, solid-state phosphorescence of these Cu(I) complexes can be effectively manipulated by external mechanical force. Remarkably, luminophores 1, 2 and 5 exhibit blue-shifted mechanoluminochromism responses, while luminophores 3, 4 and 6 present red-shifted mechanoluminochromism characteristics. All of the observed mechano-responsive phosphorescence changes of solids 1-6 are reversible by the method of solvent fuming. Powder X-ray diffraction results confirm that the reversible mechanically induced phosphorescence changes of complexes 1-6 are due to the mutual transformation of ordered crystalline and metastable amorphous states.

Two New Red/Near-Infrared Ir(Ⅲ) Complexes with Reversible and Force-Induced Enhanced Mechanoluminescence

Two novel ionic red/near-infrared Ir(III) complexes (Ir1 and Ir2) were reasonably designed and prepared using 2-(1-isoquinolinyl)-9,10-anthraquinone as the main ligand and 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl and 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridyl as the auxiliary ligands, respectively. Both complexes showed bright phosphorescence in solution (peak at 618 nm with a shoulder at 670 nm). Interestingly, the phosphorescence peak of two Ir(III) complexes showed a blue-shift of about 36 nm after being ground. Simultaneously, both complexes exhibited mechanical force-induced enhanced emission, and the intensity of the luminescence for Ir1 and Ir2 increased by around two times compared to the one before being ground, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation were utilized to understand well the mechanism of this phenomenon and suggested that the destruction of the well-ordered crystalline nature and the decline in triplet-triplet annihilation maybe responsible for the pressure-induced blue-shift and the enhancement of the phosphorescence.

Anion-selective "Turn-on" two color phosphorescent probes based on "Pd-Pd" interaction of a series of cyclometallated Palladium (II) complexes induced by a self-assembly in aqueous solution

Herein, three pairs of cationic cyclometallated palladium (II) complexes with different types of C^N ligands, which is non-phosphorescent in aqueous solution, interestingly, they can be utilized as turn-on blue phosphorescent probes selectively for ClO^-, HSO₃^- and CO₃^2-, and turn-on green phosphorescent probe for HSO₃^- in aqueous solution. These different phosphorescent turn-on responses of Pd(II) complexes could be attributed to the degree of coordination and electrostatic interaction between them with specific anion. It suggests that the selectivity towards specific anion of these cyclometallated Pd(II) complexes can be further improved by rationally tuning the structure and enhancing aromaticity of C^N ligand. Our study reveals that these specific species of anions can effectively induce self-assembly of Pd(II) compounds with different C^N ligand based on PdPd interaction, the aggregation and morphology of palladium complex with anion in aqueous media was also investigated by various means of ¹H NMR, UV/Vis, fluorescence spectra, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that nanowires with increased length of diameters of Pd complexes can form in aqueous solution in presence of anions with different high concentration. Furthermore, the cellular uptake and location of Pd2a was also investigated by confocal imaging for the first time. DFT calculation of monomer and dimer of Pd2a was also performed, which is helpful to explain the turn on phosphorescent effect during self-assembly process.

Polymorphism and Mechanochromism in 2-Phenylbenzothiazole Cyclometalated PtII Complexes with Chelating N∧O Ligands

New cyclometalated Pt^II complexes with 2-phenylbenzothiazole (pbt) and two different picolinate ligands [Pt(pbt)(R-pic-κN,O)] (R = H (1), OH (2)) were prepared. In contrast to 1, the OH substituent group on 2 allows modulation of the packing in the solid state through donor-acceptor H-bonding interactions with the CH₂Cl₂ solvent. Thus, three pseudopolymorphs of 2 with different aggregation degrees were isolated, including yellow 2-Y, orange-red 2-R (2·0.5CH₂Cl₂) and black 2-B (2·0.75CH₂Cl₂) with emissions at 540, 656, and 740 nm, respectively, in the solid state at 298 K. 2-R and 2-B can be transformed to the pristine solid 2. Studies of their crystal structures show that 1 and 2-Y stack in columns with only π···π stacking interactions, whereas 2-R displays strong aggregated 1D infinite chains based on Pt···Pt and π···π stacking interactions, consistent with the colors and the photophysical properties, measured in several media. Interestingly, 1 and 2 exhibit reversible mechanochromic behavior with high contrast in the color and color emission upon mechanical grinding due to a phase transition between a crystalline and an amorphous state, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies. Theoretical calculations indicate that Pt···Pt contacts are more relevant in the trimers and tetramers than in the dimers, particularly in their T₁ states, associated with a change from a ³IL/³MLCT transition in the monomer to ³MM(L+L')CT in the oligomers. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) theoretical studies indicate that the π···π stacking among chelates also exerts a strong influence in the metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition character.

Multicolor fluorescence switching material induced by force and acid

A novel D-A-D chromophore TBQM based on triphenylamine, acylhydrazone and dimethylamino was synthesized, and the emission properties of TBQM was studied in solutions as well as in aggregated state. TBQM showed obvious solvatochromism in different solutions. In addition, the reversible multicolor fluorescence switching properties under the stimulation of external forces and acid were also obtained. The fluorescence of TBQM changed from blue to bright blue, and finally to blue-green as the degree of grinding increased, which would recover after being fumigated by CH₂Cl₂. Meanwhile, TBQM could undergo twice protonation after fumigated by TFA. The fluorescence color changed from blue to bright blue, blue-green, and yellow-green until the fluorescence was quenched with the increasing of TFA fumigation time, which can be restored automatically or by TEA fumigation. Moreover, TBQM could be used as an advanced fluorescent anti-counterfeiting ink.

Recent Advances in Mechanochromism of Metal-Organic Compounds

Smart luminescent materials, which can respond to the changing of external environment (light, electricity, force, temperature, etc.), have always been one of the research hotspots. Mechanochromism refers to the materials whose emission color or intensity can be altered under the stimulation of external mechanical force. This kind of smart materials have been widely used in data storage, information encryption and sensors due to its simple operation, obvious and rapid response. The introduction of metal atoms in metal-organic compounds brings about fascinating metalophilic interactions and results in more interesting and surprising mechanochromic behaviors. In this mini-review, recent advances in mechanochromism of metal-organic compounds, including mono-, di-, multinuclear metal-organic complexes and metallic clusters are summarized. Varies mechanisms are discussed and some design strategies for metal-organic compounds with mechanochromism are also presented.

Chameleonic Photo- and Mechanoluminescence in Pyrazolate-Bridged NHC Cyclometalated Platinum Complexes

DFT investigations on the ground (GS) and the first triplet (T₁) excited state potential energy surfaces (PES) were performed on a new series of platinum-butterfly complexes, [{Pt(C^∧C*)(μ-Rpz)}₂] (Rpz: pz, 1; 4-Mepz, 2; 3,5-dmpz, 3; 3,5-dppz, 4), containing a cyclometalated NHC in their wings. The geometries of two close-lying local minima corresponding to butterfly spread conformers, 1s-4s, and butterfly folded ones, 1f-4f, with long and short Pt-Pt separations, respectively, were optimized in the GS and T₁ PES. A comparison of the GS and T₁ energy profiles revealed that an opposite trend is obtained in the relative stability of folded and spread conformers, the latter being more stabilized in their GS. Small ΔG (s/f) along with small-energy barriers in the GS support the coexistence of both kinds of conformers, which influence the photo- and mechanoluminescence of these complexes. In 5 wt % doped PMMA films in the air, these complexes exhibit intense sky-blue emissions (PLQY: 72.0-85.9%) upon excitation at λ ≤ 380 nm arising from ³IL/MLCT excited states, corresponding to the predominant 1s-4s conformers. Upon excitation at longer wavelengths (up to 450 nm), the minor 1f-4f conformers afford a blue emission as well, with PLQY still significant (40%-60%). In the solid state, the as-prepared powder of 4 exhibits a greenish-blue emission with QY ∼ 29%, mainly due to ³IL/³MLCT excited states of butterfly spread molecules, 4s. Mechanical grinding resulted in an enhanced and yellowish-green emission (QY ∼ 51%) due to the ³MMLCT excited states of butterfly folded molecules, 4f, in such a way that the mechanoluminescence has been associated with an intramolecular structural change induced by mechanical grinding.

Realization of Distinct Mechano- and Piezochromic Behaviors via Alkoxy Chain Length-Modulated Phosphorescent Properties and Multidimensional Self-Assembly Structures of Dinuclear Platinum(II) Complexes

In this work, through the introduction of different lengths of alkoxy chains to the dinuclear cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, the apparent color, solubility, luminescence properties, and self-assembly behaviors have been remarkably modulated. In the solid state, the luminescence properties have been found to arise from emission origins that switch between the ³MMLCT excited state in the red solids and the ³IL excited state in the yellow state, depending on the alkoxy chain lengths. The luminescence of the yellow solids is found to show obvious bathochromic shifts under mechanical grinding and decreased intensity under controllable hydrostatic pressure. However, the emission of the red solids exhibits both a bathochromic shift and reduced intensity due to the isotropic compression-induced shortening of the Pt···Pt and π-π distances. By combining the data obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR), and X-ray single crystal structure, a better understanding of the relationship between molecular aggregation and photophysical properties has been realized, suggesting that the length of the alkoxy chains plays an important role in governing the supramolecular assemblies.

Trinuclear Organometallic Pt-Ir-Pt Complexes: Insights into Photophysical Properties, Amino Acid Binding and Protein Sensing

The rational synthesis of trinuclear emissive organometallic complexes with two equivalent platinum(II) centres appended to the ancillary substituted 2,2'-bipyridyl ligand of the cyclometalated iridium(III) centre is reported here. The alkynyl-platinum moiety and cyclometalated iridium(III) centres have been separated through a non-conjugated CH₂ -O-CH₂ linkage. The emission titration with amino acids reveals that the complexes sense free amino acids. The luminescence sensing of BSA is thus attributed to the amino acid sensing ability of the complexes and confirmed by emission anisotropy and Far-UV CD spectral study. The decrease in α-helix in the CD spectra signifies the changes in the secondary structure of protein in presence of the complexes.

Mechanochromic luminescence properties of fluoro-substituted pinene-containing cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes with multiple triplet excited states

The structure-mechanochromism relationship is explored with respect to packing patterns and corresponding intermolecular interactions that are affected by the number and location of -F. The distinct and reversible mechanochormic luminescence (Δλem up to ca. 90 nm) of yellow solids (-)-1-Yg, (-)-2-Yg, and (-)-3-Yg was displayed with a simultaneous crystal-to-amorphous transformation. The change of multiple triplet excited states accounted for the mechanochormic luminescence, and a switch from the 3π,π* monomer to the excimer/3MMLCT occurred in the grinding process. The mechanical force led to perturbation in the molecular packing, and aggregates with effective PtPt and π-π interactions were formed in the amorphous phase, leading to the variation of excited states. The mechanochromic luminescence could be reverted by dropping in CH2Cl2 and could be cycled multiple times without perceivable performance degradation. This work gives a reference for designing mechanochromic luminescent materials toward multicolor and multicomponent responses.

Persistent room-temperature phosphorescence or high-contrast phosphorescent mechanochromism: polymorphism-dependent different emission characteristics from a single gold(I) complex

Luminophores with persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (p-RTP) or effective phosphorescent mechanochromism features have significant potential applications in the field of optoelectronic materials. Until now, p-RTP and remarkable phosphorescent mechanochromism phenomena have been observed in some luminescent molecules with different molecular structures. However, separately realizing p-RTP and high-contrast phosphorescent mechanochromism in different polymorphs from a single luminophore is still a valuable and challenging topic. In this work, two polymorphs 1B and 1YG of a new gold(i) complex with blue and yellow-green luminescence, respectively, are reported. Interestingly, 1B exhibits high-contrast phosphorescent mechanochromic behavior, while 1YG exhibits a persistent room-temperature phosphorescence effect. This is the first example of simultaneously obtaining double-purpose crystalline materials with a high-contrast phosphorescent mechanochromism or persistent room-temperature phosphorescence feature from a single luminophore.

Luminescent terpyridine appended geminal bisazide and bistriazoles: multinuclear Pt(II) complexes and AIPE-based DNA detection with the naked eye

We report square planar Pt(ii) complexes as luminescent biosensors for DNA detection in solution. The sensing is attributed to the aggregation induced bright red photoluminescence (AIPE) of the complexes in the presence of DNA that can be seen with the naked eye using only a 360 nm light source. Terpyridine appended luminescent geminal bistriazoles (L1-L4, from geminal bisazide A through azide-alkyne 'click' cycloaddition) with versatile chelating sites were explored for metal coordination and reaction with Pt(dmso)2Cl2 yielding tetranuclear and dinuclear complexes of Pt(ii) with different N∩N ligand environments. Thermally stable gem-bisazide and bistriazoles are hardly reported in the literature and this is the first report of terpyridine appended geminal bisazide and bistriazoles.
