Endowing Metal-Organic Coordination Materials with Chiroptical Activity by a Chiral Anion Strategy

Recently, chiral metal-organic coordination materials have emerged as promising candidates for a wide range of applications in chiroptoelectronics, chiral catalysis, and information encryption, etc. Notably, the chiroptical effect of coordination chromophores makes them appealing for applications such as photodetectors, OLEDs, 3D displays, and bioimaging. The direct synthesis of chiral coordination materials using chiral organic ligands or complexes with metal-centered chirality is very often tedious and costly. In the case of ionic coordination materials, the combination of chiral anions with cationic, achiral coordination compounds through noncovalent interactions may endow molecular materials with desirable chiroptical properties. The use of such a simple chiral strategy has been proven effective in inducing promising circular dichroism and/or circularly polarized luminescence signals. This concept article mainly delves into the latest advances in exploring the efficacy of such a chiral anion strategy for transforming achiral coordination materials into chromophores with superb photo- or electro-chiroptical properties. In particular, ionic small-molecular metal complexes, metal clusters, coordination supramolecular assemblies, and metal-organic frameworks containing chiral anions are discussed. A perspective on the future opportunities on the preparation of chiroptical materials with the chiral anion strategy is also presented.

Stimuli-responsive luminescence from polar cyano/isocyano-derived luminophores via structural tailoring and self-assembly

Polar cyano fragments and their isomeric isocyano counterparts have attracted great attention as stimuli-responsive luminescent materials in a wide range of fields including organic light-emitting diode devices, chemical fluorescent sensors, photoelectric semiconductors, anti-counterfeit products, etc., mainly because of their typical electron-deficient activity, noncovalent recognition ability, and variable coordination capacity. The electron-deficient and polar nature of these blocks have significant effects on the properties of the cyano/isocyano-based luminophore materials, especially concerning their condensed state-dependent electronic structures. Among them, donor-acceptor (D-A) derived unimolecular and co-assembled luminophores have attracted more attention because their large delocalized structures and noncovalent interaction recognition sites can rebuild the electronic transfer character in the aggregative state, thus endowing them with outstanding stimuli-responsive luminescent behavior via intermolecular and intramolecular charge transfer in polytropic morphologies. In this perspective paper, we give a brief introduction on stimuli-responsive organic and coordinated luminophores and the documented typical design concepts and applications in recent years. It is expected that this perspective article will not only summarize the recent developments of polar cyano/isocyano-derived luminophores and their coordination compounds via structural tailoring and self-assembly but also throw light on the future of the design of more sophisticated stimuli-responsive architectures and their versatile properties.

Self-assembled supramolecular artificial light-harvesting nanosystems: construction, modulation, and applications

Artificial light-harvesting systems, an elegant way to capture, transfer and utilize solar energy, have attracted great attention in recent years. As the primary step of natural photosynthesis, the principle of light-harvesting systems has been intensively investigated, which is further employed for artificial construction of such systems. Supramolecular self-assembly is one of the feasible methods for building artificial light-harvesting systems, which also offers an advantageous pathway for improving light-harvesting efficiency. Many artificial light-harvesting systems based on supramolecular self-assembly have been successfully constructed at the nanoscale with extremely high donor/acceptor ratios, energy transfer efficiency and the antenna effect, which manifests that self-assembled supramolecular nanosystems are indeed a viable way for constructing efficient light-harvesting systems. Non-covalent interactions of supramolecular self-assembly provide diverse approaches to improve the efficiency of artificial light-harvesting systems. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in artificial light-harvesting systems based on self-assembled supramolecular nanosystems. The construction, modulation, and applications of self-assembled supramolecular light-harvesting systems are presented, and the corresponding mechanisms, research prospects and challenges are also briefly highlighted and discussed.

Luminescence Enhancement and Temperature Sensing Properties of Hybrid Bismuth Halides Achieved via Tuning Organic Cations

Bismuth-halide-based inorganic-organic hybrid materials (Bi-IOHMs) are desirable in luminescence-related applications due to their advantages such as low toxicity and chemical stability. Herein, two Bi-IOHMs of [Bpy][BiCl₄(Phen)] (1, Bpy = N-butylpyridinium, Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and [PP14][BiCl₄(Phen)]·0.25H₂O (2, PP14 = N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium), containing different ionic liquid cations and same anionic units, have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group of P2₁/c and P2₁, respectively. They both possess zero-dimensional ionic structures and exhibit phosphorescence at room temperature upon excitation of UV light (375 nm for 1, 390 nm for 2), with microsecond lifetime (24.13 μs for 1 and 95.37 μs for 2). Hirshfeld surface analysis has been utilized to visually exhibit the different packing motifs and intermolecular interactions in 1 and 2. The variation in ionic liquids makes compound 2 have a more rigid supramolecular structure than 1, resulting in a significant enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), that is, 0.68% for 1 and 33.24% for 2. In addition, the ratio of the emission intensities for compounds 1 and 2 shows a correlation with temperature. This work provides new insight into luminescence enhancement and temperature sensing applications involving Bi-IOHMs.

Polymeric Nanoparticles with Embedded Eu(III) Complexes as Molecular Probes for Temperature Sensing

Three novel luminescent Eu(III) complexes, Eu1-Eu3, have been synthesized and characterized with CHN analysis, mass-spectrometry and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The complexes display strong emission in dichloromethane solution upon excitation at 405 and 800 nm with a quantum yield from 18.3 to 31.6%, excited-state lifetimes in the range of 243-1016 ms at 20 °C, and lifetime temperature sensitivity of 0.9%/K (Eu1), 1.9%/K (Eu2), and 1.7%/K (Eu3). The chromophores were embedded into biocompatible latex nanoparticles (NPs_Eu1-NPs_Eu3) that prevented emission quenching and kept the photophysical characteristics of emitters unchanged with the highest temperature sensitivity of 1.3%/K (NPs_Eu2). For this probe cytotoxicity, internalization dynamics and localization in CHO-K1 cells were studied together with lifetime vs. temperature calibration in aqueous solution, phosphate buffer, and in a mixture of growth media and fetal bovine serum. The obtained data were then averaged to give the calibration curve, which was further used for temperature estimation in biological samples. The probe was stable in physiological media and displayed good reproducibility in cycling experiments between 20 and 40 °C. PLIM experiments with thermostated CHO-K1 cells incubated with NPs_Eu2 indicated that the probe could be used for temperature estimation in cells including the assessment of temperature variations upon chemical shock (sample treatment with mitochondrial uncoupling reagent).

Self-assembled Fluorescent Nanoparticles with Tunable LCST Behavior in Water

The development of stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials in water based on organic molecule has drawn significant interest. Herein, we designed and synthesized an amphiphilic molecule M containing a fixed tetraphenylethylene moiety (FTPE) as hydrophobic part and tri(ethylene glycol) (TEG) chains as hydrophilic part. Notably, the FTPE moiety is aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active, while the TEG chains are thermo-responsive. M can self-assemble into fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) in water, which showed lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. Moreover, its clouding point can be reversibly tuned upon the concentration variation. Interestingly, the NPs can be acted as a fluorescence thermometer in aqueous media owing to their unique AIE and LCST behaviors. Our work herein not only provides an integration strategy to construct stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials but also shows great potential in biological applications including bioimaging and biosensors.

Fluorescence Switching for Temperature Sensing in Water

A water-soluble thermochromic molecular switch with spectrally resolved fluorescence in its two interconvertible states can be assembled in three synthetic steps by integrating a fluorescent coumarin chromophore, a hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) chain, and a switchable oxazole heterocycle in the same covalent skeleton. Measurements of its two emissions in separate detection channels of a fluorescence microscope permit the noninvasive and ratiometric sensing of temperature at the micrometer level with millisecond response in aqueous solutions and within hydrogel matrices. The ratiometric optical output of this fluorescent molecular switch overcomes the limitations of single-wavelength fluorescent probes and enables noninvasive temperature mapping at length scales that are not accessible to conventional thermometers based on physical contact.

Influence of the electronic effect of an ancillary ligand on MMCT and LMCT in localized cyanide-bridged complexes containing non-innocent ligands

For bimetallic MV complexes with non-innocent ligands, the MMCT energy in the localized system decreases significantly while the LMCT energy in the delocalized moiety increases slightly as the electronic effect of ancillary ligands is enhanced.

Structural characterization and luminescence properties of trigonal Cu(i) iodine/bromine complexes comprising cation–π interactions

Trigonal copper(i) complexes comprising cation–π interactions achieve satisfactory photoluminescence properties.

Thermo-active Smart Electrospun Nanofibers

The recent burst of research on smart materials is a clear evidence of the growing interest of the scientific community, industry, and society in the field. The exploitation of the great potential of stimuli-responsive materials for sensing, actuation, logic, and control applications is favored and supported by new manufacturing technologies, such as electrospinning, that allows to endow smart materials with micro- and nano-structuration, thus opening up additional and unprecedented prospects. In this wide and lively scenario, this article systematically reviews the current advances in the development of thermo-active electrospun fibers and textiles, sorting them, according to their response to the thermal stimulus. Hence, several platforms including thermo-responsive systems, shape memory polymers, thermo-optically responsive systems, phase change materials, thermoelectric materials, and pyroelectric materials, have been described and critically discussed. The difference in active species and outputs of the aforementioned categories has been highlighted, evidencing the transversal nature of temperature stimulus. Moreover, the potential of novel thermo-active materials has been pointed out, revealing how their development could take to utmost interesting achievements. This article is protected by copyright. Multistimulus Response of Two Tautomeric Zn(II) Complexes and Their White-Light Emission Based on Different Mechanisms

A triphenylamine (TPA)-based 2H-quinazoline Zn(II) complex (Q-TPA-Zn) exhibiting dual fluorescence and phosphorescence emission in the solid state was designed and prepared. It possesses mechanochromic luminescence and thermochromic luminescence properties. In the solid state, the white afterglow luminescence could be observed at 77 K (CIE_xy: 0.27, 0.33) while cyan luminescence could be observed at 297 K. After thermolysis at 300 °C, Q-TPA-Zn could be transformed into Schiff base complex S-TPA-Zn with white fluorescence in the powder state (CIE_xy: 0.32, 0.38), in methanol (CIE_xy: 0.32, 0.39), and in dimethylformamide (CIE_xy: 0.26, 0.32) at room temperature. This arises from dual emission of normal* emission and tautomeric* emission induced by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the benzimidazole NH group to the Schiff base N atom. Q-TPA-Zn could also be transformed into its isomeric form, S-TPA-Zn, through photochemical ring-opening reaction upon irradiation under 365 nm in the solution, exhibiting high-contrast photochromic luminescence. Interestingly, S-TPA-Zn could further be transformed into its zwitterionic isomer after continuous irradiation. The same ring-opening reaction could also take place for the orgainc compound Q-TPA via heating or 365 nm irradiation. The ring-opening reaction mechanism and ESIPT emission were interpreted via theoretical calculation.

A photoluminescent thermometer made from a thermoresponsive tetranuclear gold complex and phosphor N630

Reaction of [(3-bdppmapy)(AuCl)₂] with NaHmba (3-bdppmapy = N,N'-bis-(diphenylphosphanylmethyl-3-aminopytidine, H₂mba = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) resulted in a new tetranuclear Au/P/S complex [(3-bdppmapy)₂(AuHmba)₃(AuCl)] (1). Upon excitation at 370 nm, 1 exhibited solid state, room temperature, green fluorescent emission (QY = 4.7%, τ = 2.58 ns) which was significantly enanced at lower temperatures due to strengthening of the Au-Au interaction. Different ratios of 1 with phosphor N630 in PMMA were used to make thermochromic photoluminescent films and fibres that could be fabricated into an optical thermometer sensitive over temperature ranges 80-300 K and 300-370 K.

Advancement in functionalized luminescent frameworks and their prospective applications as inkjet-printed sensors and anti-counterfeit materials

Supramolecular luminescent frameworks with conjugated architectures exhibits interesting photophysical properties with phenomenal chemical and thermal stability. This has instigated global researchers towards its extensive application in toxic analyte detection and the formulation of anti-counterfeit materials. In correlation with this present scenario, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), possessing tailorable structural and functional properties and exceptional physicochemical features, have been categorized as emerging 'smart materials'. Interestingly, LMOFs have assisted in the rapid development of an effectual sensing platform and swift fabrication of anti-counterfeit materials on desirable substrates with the aid of 'Inkjet Printing', which is a viable, low-cost, and high-resolution technology. Inkjet printing is an excellent material deposition technique in the modern era owing to its easy settling over flexible substrates, simplistic emergence of large area image patterns with improved throughput, minimal cost, explicit resolution, and least waste generation. The present review provides state-of-the-art progress on LMOFs based (i) luminescent security ink fabrication with static and dynamic multinodal luminescent materials and (ii) sensory device formulation for the easy and instantaneous recognition of hazardous analytes through the 'Inkjet Printing' technology. This techno-chemical integration will be certainly beneficial to prevent the growth of counterfeit materials and monitor the bioaccumulation of hazardous analytes in our ecological system.

Effects of transition metal cations and temperature on the luminescence of a 3-cyano-4-dicyanomethylene-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-2-olate anion

The luminescence intensity of a 3-cyano-4-dicyanomethylene-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-2-olate anion (HA−) drops to zero upon complexation with transition metal cations, and reversibly drops by 6–7 times upon heating from 27 up to 123 °C.

Molecular gold strings: aurophilicity, luminescence and structure-property correlations

This review covers the compound class of one-dimensional gold strings. These compounds feature a formally infinite repetition of gold complexes as monomers/repeating units that are held together by aurophilic interactions, i.e. direct gold-gold contacts. Their molecular structures are primarily determined in the solid state using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The chemical composition of the employed gold complexes is diverse and furthermore plays a key role in terms of structure characteristics and the resulting properties. One of the most common features of gold strings is their photoluminescence upon UV excitation. The emission energy is often dependent on the distance of adjacent gold ions and the electronic structure of the whole string. In terms of gold strings, these parameters can be fine-tuned by external stimuli such as solvent, pH value, pressure or mechanical stress. This leads to direct structure-property correlations, not only with regard to the photophysical properties, but also electric conductivity for potential application in nanoelectronics. Concerning these correlations, gold strings, consisting of self-assembled individual complexes as building blocks, are the ideal compound class to look at, as perturbations by an inhomogeneity in the ligand sphere (such as the end of a molecule) can be neglected. Therefore, the aim of this review is to shed light on the past achievements and current developments in this area.
