A 3D nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution

Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline on the MnFe2O4/BGA Composite under Visible Light

In this work, the MnFe₂O₄/BGA (boron-doped graphene aerogel) composite prepared via the solvothermal method is applied as a photocatalyst to the degradation of tetracycline in the presence of peroxymonosulfate. The composite's phase composition, morphology, valence state of elements, defect and pore structure were analyzed by XRD, SEM/TEM, XPS, Raman scattering and N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, respectively. Under the radiation of visible light, the experimental parameters, including the ratio of BGA to MnFe₂O₄, the dosages of MnFe₂O₄/BGA and PMS, and the initial pH and tetracycline concentration were optimized in line with the degradation of tetracycline. Under the optimized conditions, the degradation rate of tetracycline reached 92.15% within 60 min, whereas the degradation rate constant on MnFe₂O₄/BGA remained 4.1 × 10^-2 min^-1, which was 1.93 and 1.56 times of those on BGA and MnFe₂O₄, respectively. The largely enhanced photocatalytic activity of the MnFe₂O₄/BGA composite over MnFe₂O₄ and BGA could be ascribed to the formation of type I heterojunction on the interfaces of BGA and MnFe₂O₄, which leads to the efficient transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests offered solid support to this assumption. In line with the active species trapping experiments, SO₄^•- and O₂^•- radicals are confirmed to play crucial roles in the rapid and efficient degradation of tetracycline, and accordingly, a photodegradation mechanism for the degradation of tetracycline on MnFe₂O₄/BGA is proposed.

Nickel decorated manganese oxynitride over graphene nanosheets as highly efficient visible light driven photocatalysts for acetylsalicylic acid degradation

In this work, we prepared nanocomposites of nickel-decorated manganese oxynitride on graphene nanosheets and demonstrated them as photocatalysts for degradation of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The catalyst exhibited a high degradation efficiency over ASA under visible light irradiation and an excellent structural stability after multiple uses. Compared to manganese oxide (MnO) and manganese oxynitride (MnON) nanoparticles, larger specific surface area and smaller band gap were observed for the nanocomposite accounting for the enhanced photocatalytic efficiency. Besides the compositional effect of the catalyst, we also examined the influence of various experimental parameters on the degradation of ASA such as initial concentration, catalyst dose, initial pH and additives. The best performance was obtained for the nanocomposite when the catalyst dose was 10 mg/mL and the initial pH 3. Detection of intermediates during photocatalysis showed that ASA undergoes hydroxylation, demethylation, aromatization, ring opening, and finally complete mineralization into CO₂ and H₂O by reactive species. For practical applications as a photocatalyst, cytotoxicity of the nanocomposite was also evaluated, which revealed its insignificant impact on the cell viability. These results suggest the nanocomposite of nickel-decorated manganese oxynitride on graphene nanosheets as a promising photocatalyst for the remediation of ASA-contaminated water.

The lightest solid meets the lightest gas: an overview of carbon aerogels and their composites for hydrogen related applications

Hydrogen, a renewable and recyclable energy, has been regarded as the best solution for global energy supply in the 21^st century. Hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and hydrogen sensing are three most important aspects for hydrogen economy. Interestingly, the lightest solid, carbon aerogels (CAs), has found wide applications in these aspects due to its unique characteristics including large specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure, high electrical conductivity, superb chemical stability, and low fabrication cost. Herein, various fabrication strategies of CAs are presented, and their applications in the three most important aspects are comprehensively reviewed. In addition, the challenges and prospects are also discussed. In the light of the recent progress in CAs for hydrogen-related applications, this review provides a comprehensive assessment on materials selection, synthesis, hydrogen adsorption characteristics of CAs and catalytic activity of CA-supported nanocatalysts, offering a strategic guide to build a close connection between CAs and hydrogen economy.
