Novel recyclable BiOBr/Fe3O4/RGO composites with remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activity

Advancing sustainable water treatment strategies: harnessing magnetite-based photocatalysts and techno-economic analysis for enhanced wastewater management in the context of SDGs

Herein, we explore the holistic integration of magnetite-based photocatalysts and techno-economic analysis (TEA) as a sustainable approach in wastewater treatment aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While considerable attention has been devoted to photocatalytic dye degradation, the nexus between these processes and techno-economic considerations remains relatively unexplored. The review comprehensively examines the fundamental characteristics of magnetite-based photocatalysts, encompassing synthesis methods, composition, and unique properties. It investigates their efficacy in photocatalytic degradation, addressing homogeneous and heterogeneous aspects while discussing strategies to optimize photodegradation efficiency, including curbing electron-hole recombination and mitigating scavenging effects and interference by ions and humic acid. Moreover, the management aspects of magnetite-based photocatalysts are examined, focusing on their reusability and regeneration post-dye removal, along with the potential for reusing treated wastewater in relevant industrial applications. From a techno-economic perspective, the study evaluates the financial feasibility of deploying magnetite-based photocatalysts in wastewater treatment, correlating reduced pollution and the marketing of treated water with social, economic, and environmental objectives. By advocating the integration of magnetite-based photocatalysts and TEA, this paper contributes insights into scalable and profitable sustainable wastewater treatment practices. It underscores the alignment of these practices with SDGs, emphasizing a comprehensive and holistic approach to managing wastewater in ways that meet environmental, economic, and societal objectives.

A novel multifunctional magnetically recyclable BiOBr/ZnFe2O4-GO S-scheme ternary heterojunction: Photothermal synergistic catalysis under Vis/NIR light and NIR-driven photothermal detection of tetracycline

The threat of tetracycline (TC) to human health has become a significant issue that cannot be disregarded. Herein, in order to achieve effective degradation and high-sensitivity detection of TC, BiOBr/ZnFe2O4-GO (BOB/ZFO-GO) S-scheme heterojunction nanocomposites (NCs) have been prepared using hydrothermal method. GO with high light absorption capacity accelerated the electron transfer between BiOBr and ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals and extended the light absorption region of BOB/ZFO NCs. The optimal GO addition of BOB/ZFO-GO NCs could degrade TC solution of 10 mg/L in 80 min and have a high reaction rate constant (k) of 0.072 min-1 under visible/NIR light. According to calculations, the non-metal photocatalyst (BOB/ZFO-GO(2)) with the best degradation performance had a photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 23%. Meanwhile, BOB/ZFO-GO NCs could be recycled by magnetic field. The excellent photocatalytic and photothermal performance could be maintained even after several cycles. In addition, a photothermal detection sensor based on a photothermal material/specific recognition element/tetracycline sandwich-type structure was constructed for the trace detection of TC concentration with a detection limit as low as 10-4 ng/mL. This research provides a unique idea for the multi-functionalization of photocatalysts and has a wide range of potential applications for the identification and treatment of organic wastewater.

Self-powered biosensor using photoactive ternary nanocomposite: Testing the phospholipid content in rhodotorula glutinis oil

In the field of oil refining, the presence of excessive residual phosphorus in crude oil can significantly impact its quality, thereby emphasizing the necessity for compact and convenient testing equipment. This study primarily focuses on developing of self-powered biosensor (SPB) using immobilizing Choline Oxidase with a photoactive ternary nanocomposite complex (CHOx-BiOI-rGO-Fe3O4 NPs-ITO) as the anode and utilizing a Pt electrode as the cathode. The successful preparation of the ternary composite photoelectrode for the anode was confirmed through a range of characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2 absorption/desorption, Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectrometer (UV-vis DRS). The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties were assessed using an electrochemical workstation, revealing a significant enhancement photoelectrical responsiveness attributed to the formation of heterojunction structures. The SPB exhibited a remarkable linear relationship between the instantaneous photocurrent and phosphatidylcholine (PC) concentration, with a regression equation of I (μA) = 39.62071C (mM) + 3.47271. The linear range covered a concentration range of 0.01-10 mM, and the detection limit (S/N = 3) was determined to be 0.008 mM. It demonstrated excellent reproducibility and storage stability, positioning it a promising alternative to High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for accurate quantification of PC content in rhodotorula glutinis oil. The standard recovery PC content ranged from 98.48% to 103.53%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 1.4% to 2.4%. This research presents a convenient and precise detection device that has the potential to address the issue of lagging detection in the oil refining process.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CH4 and Dye Degradation Using Bismuth Oxychloride/Bismuth Oxyiodide/Graphitic Carbon Nitride (BiOmCln/BiOpIq/g-C3N4) Nanocomposite with Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity

The use of visible-light-driven photocatalysts in wastewater treatment, photoreduction of CO2, green solar fuels, and solar cells has elicited substantial research attention. Bismuth oxyhalide and its derivatives are a group of visible-light photocatalysts that can diminish electron–hole recombination in layered structures and boost photocatalytic activity. The energy bandgap of these photocatalysts lies in the range of visible light. A simple hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate a series of bismuth oxychloride/bismuth oxyiodide/grafted graphitic carbon nitride (BiOmCln/BiOpIq/g-C3N4) sheets with different contents of g-C3N4. The fabricated sheets were characterized through XRD, TEM, SEM-EDS, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL, and BET. The conversion efficiency of CO2 reduction to CH4 of BiOmCln/BiOpIq of 4.09 μmol g−1 can be increased to 39.43 μmol g−1 by compositing with g-C3N4. It had an approximately 9.64 times improvement. The photodegradation rate constant for crystal violet (CV) dye of BiOmCln/BiOpIq of k = 0.0684 can be increased to 0.2456 by compositing with g-C3N4. It had an approximately 3.6 times improvement. The electron paramagnetic resonance results and the quenching effects indicated that 1O2, •OH, h+, and •O2− were active species in the aforementioned photocatalytic degradation. Because of their heterojunction, the prepared ternary nanocomposites possessed the characteristics of a heterojunction of type II band alignment.

High performance visible light response of a Z-type Bi2WO6/BiOBr/RGO heterojunction photocatalyst for the degradation of norfloxacin

A Bi₂WO₆/BiOBr/RGO (BWO/BOB/RGO) composite photocatalyst with a Z-type heterojunction was prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method, and the micro-morphology and physicochemical properties of the prepared samples were characterized. After reacting under visible light for 120 min, the degradation rate of 20 mg L^-1 norfloxacin (NOR) by BWO/BOB/RGO was 95.12%, and the kinetic constant of the reaction was 6.42 times higher than that of pure BiOBr. Furthermore, BWO/BOB/RGO also shows good recycling stability and universality. The characterization results show that the improvement of the photocatalytic performance of the catalyst is mainly due to the heterojunction formed between Bi₂WO₆, RGO and BiOBr, which enhances the visible light absorption ability, accelerates the photogenerated electron migration and improves the electron-hole pair separation efficiency. The introduction of Bi₂WO₆ and RGO into the catalyst also increased its specific surface area and made it have more surface-active sites. The results of radical capture experiments showed that ˙O₂^- and h⁺ played an important role in the BWO/BOB/RGO reaction system, and the intermediate products and possible degradation pathways of the system were detected and analyzed. Furthermore, the electron transfer mechanism of the Z-type heterojunction using RGO as an electron transport medium and the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin were proposed.

Recent developments on bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX; X = Cl, Br, I) based ternary nanocomposite photocatalysts for environmental applications

Photocatalytic treatment of organic pollutants present in wastewater using semiconductor nanomaterials under light irradiation is one of the efficient advanced oxidation processes. Stable metal oxide (e.g. TiO₂) based semiconductor photocatalytic systems have been mainly investigated for this purpose. Nevertheless, their large band gap (~3.2 eV) makes them inefficient in utilization of visible light portion of solar light leading to a lower degradation efficiency. Investigations have focused on the development of visible light responsive bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX; X = Cl, Br, I), one of the potential nanomaterials with unique layered structure, for efficient absorption of solar light for the degradation of pollutants. However, the rapid recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers limits their practical applicability. To overcome such drawbacks, the development of BiOX based ternary nanocomposites received significant attention because of their unique structural and electronic properties, improved visible light response and increased separation and transfer rate of photogenerated charge carriers. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent developments on bismuth oxyhalides-based ternary nanocomposites for enhanced environmental pollutants decomposition under visible light irradiation. The principles of photocatalysis, synthetic methodologies of bismuth oxyhalides and their characteristics such as heterojunctions formation, improved visible light response and separation rate of charge carriers and the mechanisms for enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity are discussed. In addition, the future prospects on the improvement in the photocatalytic activity of bismuth oxyhalides-based ternary nanocomposites are also discussed. This review could be beneficial for designing new ternary nanocomposites with superior visible light photocatalytic efficiency.

One-Step Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity Enhancement of BiOBr/RGO Nanocomposites for Degradation of Methylene Blue

In this study, bismuth oxybromide/reduced graphene oxide (BiOBr/RGO), i.e. BiOBr-G nanocomposites, were synthesized using a one-step microwave-assisted method. The structure of the synthesized nanocomposites was characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). In addition, the ability of the nanocomposite to degrade methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation was investigated. The synthesized nanocomposite achieved an MB degradation rate of above 96% within 75 min of continuous visible light irradiation. In addition, the synthesized BiOBr-G nanocomposite exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MB. Furthermore, the results revealed that the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the BiOBr-G nanocomposite enhanced the ability of the nanocomposite to absorb visible light, thus improving the photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposites. Lastly, the MB photo-degradation mechanism of BiOBr-G was investigated, and the results revealed that the BiOBr-G nanocomposites exhibited good photocatalytic activity.
