Synthesis, characterization and corrosion inhibition behavior of 2-aminofluorene bis-Schiff bases in circulating cooling water

Spent Coffee Grounds as Eco-Friendly Additives for Aluminum-Air Batteries

A new approach to the recycling of spent coffee grounds is described in which lignin, a chemical component of spent coffee, is used as an electrolyte additive in aluminum-air batteries. The effect of lignin on the performance of aluminum-air batteries has been investigated by weight loss measurement, galvanostatic discharge test, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion inhibition efficiency is improved up to 37.3% and fuel efficiency up to 21.7% at 500 ppm of lignin molecules. The chemisorption of lignin molecules on the aluminum surface improves battery performance. Adsorption of lignin molecules onto the aluminum surface is driven by the electrostatic interaction between the lignin's hydroxyl group and the aluminum surface. The mechanism for the performance improvement is explained by the chemisorption behavior of lignin molecules. The adsorption behavior has been investigated by scanning electronic microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Freundlich adsorption isotherm, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and the computational calculation of adsorption energies based on the density functional theory (DFT).

Degradation of fluorescent dye-Solvent Green 7 (HPTS) in wastewater by advanced oxidation process

Solvent Green 7 (HPTS) is a widely used fluorescent dye. As a kind of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) derivative, HPTS would cause pollution when it is discharged into the environment. This study adopted advanced oxidation processes (UV/H₂O₂) to degrade the HPTS in aqueous solution and investigated the effects of various factors on the degradation. The results showed that: the initial concentration and the fluorescence characteristics of HPTS reduced the degradation efficiency. When the oxidant concentration of H₂O₂ was 3 mg/L, the degradation efficiency and cost of HPTS (20 mg/L) were the most appropriate; when there were various inorganic anions in the solution, the degradations were not affected, but when the solution was strong acid and there existed a lot of chloride ions, the degradation of HPTS was inhibited. The degradation pathways indicated HPTS degraded into naphthalene derivatives, benzene derivatives through oxidation and decarboxylation reactions, finally into water and carbon dioxide. Further research for substances similar to HPTS structure will make progress in understanding the degradation process of PAHs.

Synthesis of MOFs/GO composite for corrosion resistance application on carbon steel

Two unreported metal–organic frameworks [Cu(6-Me-2,3-pydc)(1,10-phen)·7H₂O]_n (namely Cu-MOF) and [Mn₂(2,2′-bca)₂(H₂O)₂]_n (namely Mn-MOF) were synthesized by a solvothermal method and their structures were characterized and confirmed by elemental analysis, X-ray single crystal diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Cu-MOF/graphene (Cu-MOF/GR), Cu-MOF/graphene oxide (Cu-MOF/GO), Mn-MOF/graphene (Mn-MOF/GR) and Mn-MOF/graphene oxide (Mn-MOF/GO) composite materials were successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method and characterized and analyzed by PXRD, SEM and TEM. In order to study the corrosion inhibition properties of the Cu-MOF/GR, Cu-MOF/GO, Mn-MOF/GR and Mn-MOF/GO composite materials on carbon steel, they were mixed with waterborne acrylic varnish to prepare a series of composite coatings to explore in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution by electrochemical measurements and results showed that the total polarization resistance of the 3% Cu-MOF/GO and 3% Mn-MOF/GO composite coatings on the carbon steel surface were relatively large, and were 55 097 and 55 729 Ω cm², respectively, which could effectively protect the carbon steel from corrosion. After immersion for 30 days, the 3% Mn-MOF/GO composite still maintained high corrosion resistance, the |Z| values were still as high as 23 804 Ω cm². Therefore, MOFs compounded with GO can produce a synergistic corrosion inhibition effect and improve the corrosion resistance of the coating; this conclusion is well confirmed by the adhesion capability test.
