Exploring Vacuum-Assisted Thin Films toward Supercapacitor Applications: Present Status and Future Prospects

Demand for high-performance energy storage devices is growing tremendously. Supercapacitors possess an excellent candidature to fulfill the energy storage requisites such as high energy density when compared to conventional capacitors, high power density, and cycling stability as compared to batteries, though not only for large-scale devices for higher energy/power density applications but also for macro- to microdevices for miniaturized electrical components. With the aid of various routes, many materials have been explored with well-tuned properties with controlled surface architecture through various preparative parameters to find those best suited for supercapacitive electrodes. Growth of a thin film can be accomplished through chemical or physical (vacuum-assisted) routes. Vacuum-assisted (physical) growth yields high purity, precise dimensions with a line-of-sight deposition, along with high adhesion between the film and the substrates, and hence, these techniques are necessary to manufacture many macro- to microscale supercapacitor devices. Still, much effort has not been put forth to explore vacuum-assisted techniques to fabricate supercapacitive electrodes and energy storage applications. The present review explores the first comprehensive report on the growth of widespread materials through vacuum-assisted physical deposition techniques inclusive of thermal evaporation, e-beam evaporation, sputtering, and laser beam ablation toward supercapacitive energy storage applications on one platform. The theoretical background of nucleation and growth through physical deposition, optimization of process parameters, and characterization to supercapacitor applications from macro- to microscale devices has been well explored to a provide critical analysis with literature-reviewed materials. The review ends with future challenges to bring out upcoming prospects to further enhance supercapacitive performance, as much work and materials need to be explored through these routes.

Binder-free NiO/CuO hybrid structure via ULPING (Ultra-short Laser Pulse for In-situ Nanostructure Generation) technique for supercapacitor electrode

Developing a cost-effective pseudocapacitor electrode manufacturing process incorporating binder-free, green synthesis methods and single-step fabrication is crucial in advancing supercapacitor research. This study aims to address this pressing issue and contribute to the ongoing efforts in the field by introducing ULPING (Ultra-short Laser Pulse for In-situ Nanostructure Generation) technique for effective design. Laser irradiation was conducted in ambient conditions to form a CuO/NiO hybrid structure providing a synergistic contribution to the electrical behavior of the electrode. Mainly, the effects of surface morphology and electrochemical surface because of tuning laser intensity were analyzed. The samples demonstrated high oxide formation, fiber generation, excellent porosity, and ease of ion accessibility. Owing to a less than 10-min binder-free fabrication method, the electrochemical performance of the as-fabricated electrode was 25.8 mC cm^-2 at a current density of 1 mA cm^-2 proved to be excellent. These excellent surface properties were possible by the simple working principle of pulsed laser irradiation in ambient conditions and smart tuning of the important laser parameters. The CuO/NiO electrode demonstrates excellent conductivity and rewarding cyclic stability of 83.33% after 8000 cycles. This study demonstrates the potential of the ULPING technique as a green and simple method for fabricating high-performance pseudocapacitor electrodes.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Cobalt Ferrite Coatings for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

In this paper, two novel procedures based on powder sedimentation, thermal treatment, and galvanostatic deposition were proposed for the preparation of porous cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) coatings with a metallic and organic binder for use as catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrochemical properties of the obtained electrode materials were determined as well, using both dc and ac methods. It was found that cobalt ferrite coatings show excellent electrocatalytic properties towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with overpotential measured at a current density of 10 mAcm−2 from 287 to 295 mV and a Tafel slope of 35–45 mVdec−1. It was shown that the increase in the apparent activity of the CoFe2O4 coatings with an organic binder results mainly from a large electrochemically active area. Incorporation of the nickel binder between the CoFe2O4 particles causes an increase in both the conductivity and the electrochemically active area. The Tafel slopes indicate that the same rate-determining step controls the OER for all obtained coatings. Furthermore, it was shown that the CoFe2O4 electrodes exhibit no significant activity decrease after 28 h of oxygen evolution. The proposed coating preparation procedures open a new path to develop high-performance OER electrocatalysts.

Single-Step Direct Laser Writing of Multimetal Oxygen Evolution Catalysts from Liquid Precursors

We investigate a laser direct-write method to synthesize and deposit metastable, mixed transition metal oxides and evaluate their performance as oxygen evolution reaction catalysts. This laser processing method enabled the rapid synthesis of diverse heterogeneous alloy and oxide catalysts directly from cost-effective solution precursors, including catalysts with a high density of nanocrystalline metal alloy inclusions within an amorphous oxide matrix. The nanoscale heterogeneous structures of the synthesized catalysts were consistent with reactive force-field Monte Carlo calculations. By evaluating the impact of varying transition metal oxide composition ratios, we created a stable Fe_0.63Co_0.19Ni_0.18O_x/C catalyst with a Tafel slope of 38.23 mV dec^-1 and overpotential of 247 mV, a performance similar to that of IrO₂. Synthesized Fe_0.63Co_0.19Ni_0.18O_x/C and Fe_0.14Co_0.46Ni_0.40O_x/C catalysts were experimentally compared in terms of catalytic performance and structural characteristics to determine that higher iron content and a less crystalline structure in the secondary matrix decrease the charge transfer resistance and thus is beneficial for electrocatalytic activity. This conclusion is supported by density-functional theory calculations showing distorted active sites in ternary metal catalysts are key for lowering overpotentials for the oxygen evolution reaction.
