Flexible translucent chitosan-glycerin/QD nanocomposite glue for anti-counterfeiting films with strong adhesion and stability

Multi-color luminescence and anticounterfeiting application of upconversion nanoparticle†

Multi-color luminescence materials are important in the illumination, solid-state three-dimensional display, information storage, biological labelling and anticounterfeiting fields. Herein, we designed a novel core–shell structure upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) material (NaYF₄) with lanthanide ion doping to achieve multi-color luminescence under a single NIR excitation laser. Different from the typical single-sensitizer materials, the core–shell structure utilizes Nd³⁺, Yb³⁺, Tm³⁺ and Er³⁺ ions to obtain tuning of the color and brightness. The doping of Nd³⁺ ions enhances the weak color (red) light source to maintain the light color balance. Benefiting from the color adjustment of the sensitizers and the change of the core–shell coating, bright-white emission and flexible color emission from red to green, cyan and blue can be achieved via the diverse doped rare earth ions in a single UCNP under continuous-wave laser excitation (980 nm). Simultaneously, the emission color of the UCNPs can change with the intensity of the excitation light source and the wavelength. The bright-white emission can be used for lighting displays, and the flexible full-color emission can be applied in the anticounterfeiting and information storage fields.

Quadruply doped (Nd³⁺, Tm³⁺, Er³⁺ and Yb³⁺) core–shell structure NaYF₄ UCNPs achieve multi-color luminescence based on a single material under 980 nm excitation. Their applicability to anticounterfeiting and information storage has been verified.

Cellulose as an Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Material for Optical Anticounterfeiting Applications: An Up-to-Date Appraisal

The falsification of documents, currency, pharmaceuticals, branded goods, clothing, food products, and packaging leads to severe consequences. Counterfeited products can not only pose health risks to consumers but also cause substantial economic losses that can negatively impact the global markets. Unfortunately, most anticounterfeiting strategies are easily duplicated due to rapid technological advancements. Therefore, innovative and cost-effective antiforgery techniques that can offer superior multilevel security features are continuously sought after. Due to the ever-growing global awareness of environmental pollution, renewable and eco-friendly native biopolymers are garnering wide attention in anticounterfeiting applications. This review highlights the potential use of cellulose-based eco-friendly materials to combat the counterfeiting of goods. The initial section of the review focuses on the structure, properties, and chemical modifications of cellulose as a sustainable biomaterial. Further, the topical developments reported on cellulose and nanocellulose-based materials used as fluorescent security inks, films, and papers for achieving protection against counterfeiting are presented. The studies suggest the convenient use of celluose and modified cellulose materials for promising optical antiforgery applications. Furthermore, the scope for future research developments is also discussed based on the current critical challenges in the fabrication of cellulose-based materials and their anticounterfeit applications.

Antimicrobial adhesive films by plasma-enabled polymerisation of m-cresol

This work reveals a versatile new method to produce films with antimicrobial properties that can also bond materials together with robust tensile adhesive strength. Specifically, we demonstrate the formation of coatings by using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to convert a liquid small-molecule precursor, m-cresol, to a solid film via plasma-assisted on-surface polymerisation. The films are quite appealing from a sustainability perspective: they are produced using a low-energy process and from a molecule produced in abundance as a by-product of coal tar processing. This process consumes only 1.5 Wh of electricity to create a 1 cm² film, which is much lower than other methods commonly used for film deposition, such as chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Plasma treatments were performed in plain air without the need for any carrier or precursor gas, with a variety of exposure durations. By varying the plasma parameters, it is possible to modify both the adhesive property of the film, which is at a maximum at a 1 min plasma exposure, and the antimicrobial property of the film against Escherichia coli, which is at a maximum at a 30 s exposure.

Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Applications in Theranostics

Nanomaterials are endowed with unique features and essential properties suitable for employing in the field of nanomedicine. The nanomaterials can be classified as 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D based on their dimensions. The nanomaterials can be malleable and ductile and they can be drawn into wires and sheets. Examples of nanomaterials are quantum dots (0D), nanorods, nanowires (1D), nanosheets (2D), and nanocubes (3D). These nanomaterials can be synthesized using top-down and bottom-up approaches. The achievements of 0D and 1D nanomaterials are used to detect trace heavy metal (e.g., Pb2+) and have higher sensitivity with the order of five as compared to conventional sensors. The achievements of 2D and 3D nanomaterials are used as diagnostic and therapeutic agents with multifunctional ability in imaging systems such as PET, SPECT, etc. These imaging modalities can be used to track the drug in living tissues. This review comprises the state-of-the-art of the different dimensions of the nanomaterials employed in theranostics. The nanomaterials with different dimensions have unique physicochemical properties that can be utilized for therapy and diagnosis. The multifunctional ability of the nanomaterials can have a distinct advantage that is used in the field of theranostics. Different dimensions of the nanomaterials would have more scope in the field of nanomedicine.
