Heterostructures of ε-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3: insights from density functional theory

Enhanced specific loss power of hematite-chitosan nanohybrid synthesized by hydrothermal method

We used a hydrothermal technique to develop nano-scale α-Fe2O3 particles and functionalized them with chitosan. An X-ray diffraction study revealed α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were of single-phase, lattice constants were a = 5.07 Å and c = 13.68 Å, and the grain size was 27 nm. The presence of lattice fringes in the HRTEM image confirmed the crystalline nature of the α-Fe2O3. The Mössbauer spectra reveal a mixed relaxation state, which supports the PPMS studies. Zero-field cooled studies revealed the existence of a Morin transition and blocking temperature. The z-average value of the coated particles by DLS was between 218 and 235 nm, PDI ranged from 0.048 to 0.119, and zeta potential was +46.8 mV. We incubated the Vero and HeLa cell lines for 24 h to study the viability of the nanohybrids at different concentrations. Hyperthermia studies revealed the maximum temperature and specific loss power attained by the hematite-chitosan nanohybrid solution of a concentration between 0.25-4 mg ml-1. The Tmax at the lowest and highest concentrations of 0.25 and 4 mg ml-1 were 42.9 and 48.3°C, while the SLP were 501.6 and 35.5 W g-1, which are remarkably high when the maximum magnetization of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles was as small as 1.98 emu g-1 at 300 K.

Particle size effect on millimeter-wave absorption, rotation, and ellipticity of gallium-substituted epsilon iron oxide

Various applications employ millimeter waves. For example, the carrier frequencies of vehicle radar in advanced driver assistance systems are 76-81 GHz millimeter waves. Here, we investigate the particle size effect on millimeter-wave absorption of gallium-substituted epsilon iron oxide ε-Ga x Fe2-x O3 with x = 0.44 ± 0.01. Samples were composed of nanoparticles with sizes of 16.9(1) nm, 28.8(2) nm, and 41.4(1) nm. Millimeter wave absorption, Faraday rotation, and Faraday ellipticity were measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. This series exhibits millimeter-wave absorption at 78.7, 78.2, and 77.7 GHz without an external magnetic field. The millimeter-wave absorption increases from 4.6 dB to 9.4 dB as the particle size increases. In the magnetized sample, the Faraday rotation angle increases from 9.1° to 18.4°, while the Faraday ellipticity increases from 0.27 to 0.52. The particle size effect can be explained by the change in the ratio of the surface and core of the nanoparticles. The present study should contribute to the realization of high-performance millimeter-wave absorbers.

Synthesis of Fe2O3/Mn2O3 Nanocomposites and Impregnated Porous Silicates for Dye Removal: Insights into Treatment Mechanisms

Fe2O3/Mn2O3 nanocomposites and impregnated porous silicates (Fe2O3/Mn2O3@SiO2 [FMS]) were prepared and investigated as catalytic adsorbents. The catalysts were applied for cationic and anionic dye pollutants in the adsorption, Fenton reaction, and photocatalysis processes at a pH of 7. Fe2O3/Mn2O3 nanoparticles (FM-NPs) were prepared using the co-precipitation method and were impregnated in SiO2 by the sol–gel process. The synthesized materials were characterized using various sophisticated techniques. Results indicated that the impregnation of bi-metallic NPs in SiO2 increased the surface area, and the function of the adsorbent also improved. FMS showed a significant adsorption effect, with 79.2% rhodamine B removal within 15 min. Fenton and photocatalyst reaction showed removal rates of 85.3% and 97.9%, respectively, indicating that negatively charged porous silicate attracts cationic pollutants. In the case of the anionic pollutant, Congo red, the adsorption reaction of FMS did not occur, and the removal rate of the photocatalyst reaction was 79%, indicating the repulsive force between the negatively charged silica and the anionic dye. Simultaneously, bi-metal-bonded FM-NPs facilitated the photocatalytic reaction, reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This study provides new insights into the synthesis of FM-NPs and FMS as photocatalytic adsorbents and their photocatalytic mechanisms based on reaction conditions and contaminant characteristics. The developed materials have potential applications for environmental mitigation.
