Study on the adsorption mechanism of benzoylurea insecticides onto modified hyperbranched polysilicon materials

Ionic liquid-modified UiO-66-NH2 as sorbent of dispersive solid-phase extraction for rapid adsorption and enrichment of benzoylurea insecticides

Ionic liquid (IL)-modified UiO-66-NH2 composite was prepared and used as sorbent of dispersed solid-phase extraction (dSPE) for extracting trace benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) from complex environmental matrices. The IL in framework endowed the prepared material had electropositive characteristics, which can produce interaction with electron rich guest molecules, such as BUs. The high thermal and chemical stability of UiO-66-NH2/IL enabled it to be reused for 16 times without significant reduction in adsorption performance. Due to the multiple forces including π-π, hydrogen bonding, and fluorine-fluorine interaction, UiO-66-NH2/IL showed good adsorption performance, short adsorption time (20 s) and rapid desorption ability (60 s) for BUs. Under the optimal conditions, the method exhibited wide linear range (0.02-500 ng mL-1) with correlation coefficient (R2) not worse than 0.9928, high enrichment factor (252-300), and low detection limit (0.005-0.4 ng mL-1). The dispersed solid phase extraction coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (dSPE-HPLC-DAD) was successfully used to detection of BUs in real environmental samples and satisfactory recoveries were obtained (80.5%±2.4-118%±3.2). The results indicated that UiO-66-NH2/IL composite can be a potential sorbent for the preconcentration of trace insecticides in environmental samples.

Activated carbon-based pomegranate peels as an efficient removal method for carbamazepine

Pharmaceutical products found in wastewater and various water systems have become an environmental concern. Various processes were developed to remove various pharmaceuticals, including adsorption processes utilizing activated carbon adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes. The present study investigates the removal of carbamazepine (CBZ) from aqueous solutions by activated carbon (AC) derived from pomegranate peels (PGPs). The prepared AC was characterized by FTIR. The adsorption kinetics of CBZ on AC-PGPs was well represented by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the data were well explained by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The effect of various parameters (including pH, temperature, CBZ concentration, the adsorbent dosage, and contact time) on the efficiency of CBZ removal by AC-PGPs was studied. The CBZ removal efficiency was not affected by changes in pH values but was slightly enhanced at the outset of the adsorption experiment with increasing temperature. The highest percentage removal efficiency was 98.0% at 23 °C when the optimum adsorbent dose was determined as 400.0 mg and the CBZ initial concentration was 20.0 mg L^-1. The general and potential applicability of this method is presented by using available agricultural wastes as a low-cost source of AC and as an efficient removal method of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions.

Application, advancement and green aspects of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers in pesticide residue detection

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have added a vital contribution to food quality and safety with the effective extraction of pesticide residues due to their unique properties. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) are a superior approach to overcome stereotypical limitations due to their unique core-shell and novel composite structure, including high chemothermal stability, rapid extraction, and high selectivity. Over the past two decades, different MMIPs have been developed for pesticide extraction in actual food samples with a complex matrix. Nevertheless, such developments are desirable, yet the synthesis and mode of application of MMIP have great potential as a green chemistry approach that can significantly reduce environmental pollution and minimize resource utilization. In this review, the MMIP application for single or multipesticide detection has been summarized by critiquing each method's uniqueness and efficiency in real sample analysis and providing a possible green chemistry exploration procedure for MMIP synthesis and application for escalated food and environmental safety.
