Green and sustainable strategies to control scaling in industrial plants: investigation of the efficacy of Rosmarinus officinalis L. Extract against CaCO3 scale using experimental and theoretical approaches

In recent years, plant extracts have attracted increased interest as green alternatives to conventional anti-scaling. This is because they contain a wide range of bioactive compounds with high performance against inorganic scale. Additionally, they are biodegradable and pose minimal risks to human health and ecosystems. The present study aimed to assess the protection offered by the Rosmarinus officinalis L. leaf extract for industrial plant surfaces against the CaCO3 scale. Before assessing the anti-scaling performance of the Rosmarinus extract, phytochemical characterisation was performed by quantitative assays and HPLC-DAD analysis. Subsequently, the inhibition potential of the extract was studied using the conductivity and LCEE tests at 25°C and TH = 40°f. In addition, SEM and XRD analysis were used to assess the effect of the extract on scale morphology and crystalline phases. Finally, DFT calculations and Monte Carlo simulation were carried out to enhance knowledge of the interaction between inhibitor molecules and CaCO3(104) and (110) surfaces and optimise [extract molecule - Ca]2+ complexes. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of several phenolic compounds (rosmarinic acid, vanillic acid, cinnamic acid, rutin, kaempferol, trans chalcone and quercetin). Further LCEE studies demonstrated the promising anti-scaling activity of the extract at an effective concentration of 54 mg/L. SEM micrographs and XRD diffractograms revealed a significant change in the morphology and phases of precipitated CaCO3 scales upon the addition of the inhibitor. In addition, the computational approach strongly supported the experimental results. These results underlined the Rosmarinus extract's potential as a valuable green and sustainable scaling inhibitor source.

Investigation of olive leaf extract as a potential environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel

Corrosion constitutes a significant issue in industries that handle metals. Corrosion inhibitors with a low impact on the environment provide a significant economic benefit in various engineering applications. In this work, the effectiveness of olive leaves extract is evaluated as a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion of carbon steel in different concentrations of hydrochloric acid (0.1, 1.0, and 2.0 M) when protected by an aqueous solution of olive leaf extract of concentrations ranging from 10 to 60 ppm is investigated. A green extraction process based upon water extraction is used to ensure minimum impact on the environment. Results show that the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased as the concentration of the olive leaf extract increased. An analysis of variance showed a significant effect of acidic molarity, temperature, and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion rate. A significant statistical model indicates that the inhibitor exhibits higher efficiencies at higher acidic molarity. Results of SEM and EDX also demonstrated that a protective film of the inhibitor on the specimen surface plays a role in corrosion inhibition, suggesting that the inhibitor molecules are adsorbed at the interface between the carbon steel and the acid solution. The study provides an insight on the corrosion mechanism and highlights the potential of olive oil extract as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional corrosion inhibitors.

Experimental and Theoretical Tests on the Corrosion Protection of Mild Steel in Hydrochloric Acid Environment by the Use of Pyrazole Derivative

In this study, 1,5-diallyl-1H-pyrazolo [3,4-d] pyrimidin-4 (5H)-one (PPD) was evaluated as an anticorrosion agent for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl. The analysis was performed by weight loss (WL), potentiodynamic polarization measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The Tafel polarization showed that PPD is a mixed-type inhibitor and reaches 94% of the protective efficiency at 10^-3 M. EIS results indicated that the resistance to charge transfer increases with increasing inhibitor concentration and the corrosion of MS is controlled by a charge transfer process. The inhibitor adsorption on the MS surface obeyed the Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to elaborate the corrosion inhibition mechanism. The micrographic analysis revealed the existence of a barrier layer on the electrode surface with the presence of PPD. Theoretical examinations performed by electronic/atomic computer simulations confirmed that the obtained results were found to be consistent with experimental findings.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Leaf Extract as a Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel in Acidic Solution: Electrochemical, Functional and Molecular Analysis

An extract of cucumber leaves (ECSL) was prepared as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel. Its carbon steel corrosion inhibition performance against 0.5 mol L⁻¹ H₂SO₄ was investigated using electrochemical methods and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Its composition was analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC−MS). Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) were conducted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of the inhibitor molecules on the carbon steel surface. The results indicated that the inhibition efficiency increases with its increasing concentration. The extract acted as a mixed type corrosion inhibitor, and its inhibition properties were ascribed to the geometric coverage effect induced by its adsorption on the metal surface in accordance with Langmuir’s law. The active components in the extract were identified as mainly organic compounds with functional groups such as aromatic moieties and heteroatoms. The inhibition activities of ECSL are delivered through the ability of the active components to adsorb on the metal surface through their functional groups to form a protective layer which hinders the contact of aggressive substances with carbon steel and thus suppresses its corrosion. This research provides an important reference for the design of green corrosion inhibitors based on plant waste materials.

Synthesis and Structure of Water-Soluble Sb Quantum Dots and Enhanced Corrosion Inhibition Performance and Mechanisms

Generally, single organic or inorganic inhibitors could effectively inhibit corrosion for metallic materials; however, there are rarely reports about the hybrid corrosion inhibitors consisting of organic and inorganic inhibitors. Thus, in this work, we synthesize a hybrid environment-friendly water-soluble corrosion inhibitor (Sb quantum dots) containing Sb, Sb₂O₃, Sb₂O₄, and carbon using the electrochemical exfoliation method. The inhibition effectiveness in short- and long-term immersion tests is measured using electrochemical methods, weight loss, and surface analysis. The results exhibit that the corrosion inhibition efficiency sensitively relates to the concentration of Sb quantum dots (SQDs), which achieves the largest value as the concentration of SQDs increases to 200 mg/L. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle analysis reveal that the SQDs well-disperse on and cover the Q235 steel surface at 200 mg/L. According to the Langmuir adsorption data, the physicochemical adsorption and effective antioxidation of SQDs on the passivated Q235 steel surface are in charge of the effective corrosion inhibition efficiency in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ solution.

Quantum Chemical Analysis of the Corrosion Inhibition Potential by Aliphatic Amines

Destructive corrosion processes lead to the loss of primary mechanical properties of metal construction materials, which generates additional costs during their maintenance connected with repairs and protection. The effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors can be determined by using many methods, in particular quantum chemical modeling. The subject of the theoretical analyses presented in this work involves the anticorrosion properties of amines with various chemical structures. Evaluation of the corrosion inhibition properties of selected amines was performed on the basis of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, dipole moment (µ), electronegativity (χ) determined as a result of the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). Moreover, the HSAB (Hard and Soft Acids and Bases) theory was used to explain the reactivity of the analyzed amines, while the Mulliken population analysis was used to determine their electrostatic interactions with the surface of protected metal. The obtained results indicate that the protonation reaction of aliphatic amines leads to a change in the nature of the formation of a coordination bond with the surface of the protected metal. In turn, the quantum chemical calculations showed that the protonation reaction of aliphatic amines leads to a decrease in their corrosion inhibition efficiency. Most of the analyzed parameters indicated that tertiary amines are characterized by the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency.

Corrosion Inhibition of 3003 Aluminum Alloy in Molar Hydrochloric Acid Solution by Olive Oil Mill Liquid By-Product

According to the literature, the works on the inhibition of aluminum alloy corrosion using naturally occurring compounds are limited. For this, the inhibiting effect of oil mill liquid by-product (OMW) on the corrosion of 3003 aluminum alloy (AA3003) in molar hydrochloric acid solution was evaluated using electrochemical techniques. In parallel, a computational approach based on DFT/B3LYP and Monte Carlo methods was used to understand the inhibition process under electronic and atomic scales, respectively. The experimental results reveal that OMW has a good inhibiting effect on the corrosion of AA3003 alloy in the tested solution and acts as a cathodic inhibitor. The inhibitory efficiency increases by increasing OMW concentration to attain 89% at 6.0 ppm. The effect of temperature shows that the inhibition efficiency of OMW decreases with temperature rising. Nevertheless, a good prevention capacity of 83% is obtained at 338 K. Such interesting achieved protection property was attributed to the adsorption of OMW constituents onto the alloy surface via a mixed physichemisorption process. This process is found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore, the activation thermodynamic parameters of the corrosion process of AA3003 alloy were also determined and discussed. The computational outcomes outlined the ability of the OMW components to interact favorably with the metal surface, hence the formation of a protective layer, which justified the observed inhibition behaviors. Conferring to the present study, OMW can be used as a good green corrosion inhibitor for AA3003 alloy in the acidic medium.

Comparative Computational Study of L-Amino Acids as Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel

This research evaluates the inhibitory effect of L-amino acids (AAs) with different side chain lengths on Fe (100) surfaces implementing Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. A quantitative and qualitative description of the adsorption behavior of AAs on the iron surface has been carried out. Calculations have shown that the absolute values of the adsorption energy of L-amino acids increase with side chain prolongation; they are also determined by the presence of heteroatoms. The maximum absolute value of the adsorption energy AAs on the iron surface in accordance with the side chain classification increases in the following sequence: Glu (acidic) < Gln (polar) < Trp (nonpolar) < Arg (basic). AAs from nonpolar and basic groups have the best adsorption ability to the iron surface, which indicates their highest inhibitory efficiency according to the results of the MC simulation. The calculation results agree with the experimental data.
