Fabrication of High-Performance Polyisocyanurate Aerogels through Cocyclotrimerization of 4,4'-Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate and Its Mono-Urethane Derivatives

Aromatic polyisocyanurate (PIR) aerogels are recognized as advanced porous materials and extensively studied due to their lightweight nature, high porosity, and specific surface area, which attribute to their outstanding thermal insulation properties. The inherent thermal stability of the PIR moieties, combined with great insulating performance, renders PIR aerogels highly suitable for building insulation applications. Nevertheless, materials containing isocyanurate obtained through direct trimerization of aromatic isocyanates exhibit brittleness, resulting in inferior mechanical performance. In order to enhance the processability of the PIR aerogels, we propose a cocyclotrimerization approach involving mixtures of mono- and difunctional aromatic isocyanates. This approach is designed to develop a PIR network with decreased cross-linking density and brittleness. Herein, we developed an array of PIR aerogels from different alkyl chain-modified isocyanate mixtures. The resulting PIR aerogels exhibited high porosity (>89%), a large surface area (∼300 m2/g), superinsulating performance with ultralow thermal conductivity (∼16.8 mW m-1 K-1), notable thermal stability (Td5% ∼ 250 °C), improved mechanical performance, and intrinsic hydrophobicity without the need for postmodification. These high-performance organic aerogels hold significant promise for applications requiring superinsulating materials.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of crosslinked ureido chitosan for hemostatic applications

In this study, we present a facile method for introducing hydrophilic ureido groups (NH2-CO-NH-) into chitosan using a microwave-assisted reaction with molten urea, with the aim of enhancing chitosan's interaction with blood components for improved hemostasis. The formation of the ureido groups through nucleophilic addition reaction between the amine groups in chitosan and in situ generated isocyanic acid was confirmed by FTIR, CP/TOSS 13C NMR, and CP/MAS 15N NMR spectroscopic techniques. However, in stark contrast to the glucans, the said modification introduced extensive crosslinking in chitosan. Spectroscopic studies identified these crosslinks as carbamate bridges (-NH-COO-), which were likely formed by the reaction between the ureido groups and hydroxyl groups of adjacent chains through an isocyanate intermediate. These carbamate bridges improved ureido chitosan's environmental stability, making it particularly resistant to changes in pH and temperature. In comparison to chitosan, the crosslinked ureido chitosan synthesized here exhibited good biocompatibility and cell adhesion, rapidly arrested the bleeding in a punctured artery with minimal hemolysis, and induced early activation and aggregation of platelets. These properties render it an invaluable material for applications in hemostasis, particularly in scenarios that necessitate stability against pH variations and degradation.

Effects of deacetylation degree of chitosan on the structure of aerogels

Chitosan aerogels, obtained by (supercritical) CO2 drying of hydrogels, are novel adsorbents because of their large surface area and high porosity. Intrinsic properties of chitosan such as molecular weight (MW) and degree of deacetylation (DDA) had large impacts on the characteristics of chitosan aerogels. Although there are a few studies about the effects of solely DDA or MW on aerogel structure, none of them has focused on the mutual effects. The study aims to investigate the combined effects of MW and DDA of chitosan on aerogel properties. Hydrogels were produced in beads form by physical gelation of the chitosan solutions (2 % w/v in acetic acid of 1 %, v/v) in an alkaline environment (NaOH, 4 N). Supercritical CO2 dried aerogels were examined with respect to the bulk density, diameter as well as pore characteristics, and surface area by Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods, respectively. Morphologies of aerogels were also examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images and structural changes of aerogels were observed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. Additional to BET-BJH analysis, proton relaxation dispersion was measured by Fast Field Cycling NMR (FFC-NMR) to determine the pore volume of the aerogels. Compact structures were obtained for higher MW chitosan and lower MW chitosans with higher DDA increasing the aerogel diameters. All types of aerogels obtained by different chitosan characteristics (MW and DDA) showed a porous structure and the highest DDA with the lowest MW caused the minimum bulk density with the highest water absorption rate. Although different N2 adsorption-desorption profiles were obtained in terms of pore volumes; all aerogels had Type IV isotherms with Type H1 hysteresis curve. FFC-NMR experiments showed that the coherence length values were associated with the pore volumes and FFC-NMR experiments were found to be meaningful as supportive experiments for the characterization of aerogels.

Radioactivity/Radionuclide (U-232 and Am-241) Removal from Waters by Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels in the Sub-Picomolar Concentration Range

The removal of radionuclide/radioactivity from laboratory and environmental water samples under ambient conditions was investigated via batch-type experiments using polyurea-crosslinked calcium alginate (X-alginate) aerogels. Water samples were contaminated with traces of U-232 and Am-241. The removal efficiency of the material depends strongly on the solution pH; it is above 80% for both radionuclides in acidic solutions (pH 4), while it decreases at about 40% for Am-241 and 25% for U-232 in alkaline solutions (pH 9). This is directly associated with the presence of the radionuclide species in each case; the cationic species UO22+ and Am3+ prevail at pH 4, and the anionic species UO2(CO3)34– and Am(CO3)2− prevail at pH 9. Adsorption on X-alginate aerogels is realized by coordination of cationic species on carboxylate groups (replacing Ca2+) or other functional groups, i.e., –NH and/or –OH. In environmental water samples, i.e., ground water, wastewater and seawater, which are alkaline (pH around 8), the removal efficiency for Am-241 is significantly higher (45–60%) compared to that for U-232 (25–30%). The distribution coefficients (Kd) obtained for the sorption of Am-241 and U-232 by X-alginate aerogels are around 105 L/kg, even in environmental water samples, indicating a strong sorption affinity of the aerogel material for the radionuclides. The latter, along with their stability in aqueous environments, make X-alginate aerogels attractive candidates for the treatment of radioactive contaminated waters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the removal of americium from waters using aerogels and the first investigation of adsorption efficiency of an aerogel material at the sub-picomolar concentration range.

Uranium Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Aerogel-Based Adsorbents-A Critical Review

Aerogels are a class of lightweight, nanoporous, and nanostructured materials with diverse chemical compositions and a huge potential for applications in a broad spectrum of fields. This has led the IUPAC to include them in the top ten emerging technologies in chemistry for 2022. This review provides an overview of aerogel-based adsorbents that have been used for the removal and recovery of uranium from aqueous environments, as well as an insight into the physicochemical parameters affecting the adsorption efficiency and mechanism. Uranium removal is of particular interest regarding uranium analysis and recovery, to cover the present and future uranium needs for nuclear power energy production. Among the methods used, such as ion exchange, precipitation, and solvent extraction, adsorption-based technologies are very attractive due to their easy and low-cost implementation, as well as the wide spectrum of adsorbents available. Aerogel-based adsorbents present an extraordinary sorption capacity for hexavalent uranium that can be as high as 8.8 mol kg−1 (2088 g kg−1). The adsorption data generally follow the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetic data are in most cases better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. An evaluation of the thermodynamic data reveals that the adsorption is generally an endothermic, entropy-driven process (ΔH0, ΔS0 > 0). Spectroscopic studies (e.g., FTIR and XPS) indicate that the adsorption is based on the formation of inner-sphere complexes between surface active moieties and the uranyl cation. Regeneration and uranium recovery by acidification and complexation using carbonate or chelating ligands (e.g., EDTA) have been found to be successful. The application of aerogel-based adsorbents to uranium removal from industrial processes and uranium-contaminated waste waters was also successful, assuming that these materials could be very attractive as adsorbents in water treatment and uranium recovery technologies. However, the selectivity of the studied materials towards hexavalent uranium is limited, suggesting further developments of aerogel materials that could be modified by surface derivatization with chelating agents (e.g., salophen and iminodiacetate) presenting high selectivity for uranyl moieties.

Development of Regular Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Microspheres for Efficient Oil Adsorption

The objective of this research was to develop new hydrophobic silica aerogel microspheres (HSAMs) with water glass and hexmethyldisilazane for oil adsorption. The effects of the hexmethyldisilazane concentration and drying method on the structure and organic liquid adsorption capacity were investigated. The hexmethyldisilazane concentration of the modification solution did not influence the microstructure and pore structure in a noteworthy manner, which depended more on the drying method. Vacuum drying led to more volume shrinkage of the silica gel microsphere (SGM) than supercritical CO₂ drying, thus resulting in a larger apparent density, lower pore volume, narrower pore size distribution, and more compact network. Owing to the large pore volume and pore size, the HSAMs synthesized via supercritical CO₂ drying had a larger organic liquid adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacities of the HSAMs with pore volumes of 4.04-6.44 cm³/g for colza oil, vacuum pump oil, and hexane are up to 18.3, 18.9, and 11.8 g/g, respectively, higher than for their state-of-the-art counterparts. The new sorbent preparation method is facile, cost-effective, safe, and ecofriendly, and the resulting HSAMs are exceptional in capacity, stability, and regenerability.

Biopolymeric Fibrous Aerogels: The Sustainable Alternative for Water Remediation

The increment in water pollution due to the massive development in the industrial sector is a worldwide concern due to its impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of new and sustainable alternatives for water remediation is needed. In this context, aerogels present high porosity, low density, and a remarkable adsorption capacity, making them candidates for remediation applications demonstrating high efficiency in removing pollutants from the air, soil, and water. Specifically, polymer-based aerogels could be modified in their high surface area to integrate functional groups, decrease their hydrophilicity, or increase their lipophilicity, among other variations, expanding and enhancing their efficiency as adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants in water. The aerogels based on natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, or alginate processed by different techniques presented high adsorption capacities, efficacy in oil/water separation and dye removal, and excellent recyclability after several cycles. Although there are different reviews based on aerogels, this work gives an overview of just the natural biopolymers employed to elaborate aerogels as an eco-friendly and renewable alternative. In addition, here we show the synthesis methods and applications in water cleaning from pollutants such as dyes, oil, and pharmaceuticals, providing novel information for the future development of biopolymeric-based aerogel.

Chitosan Aerogel Particles as Nasal Drug Delivery Systems

The nasal drug delivery route has distinct advantages, such as high bioavailability, a rapid therapeutic effect, non-invasiveness, and ease of administration. This article presents the results of a study of the processes for obtaining chitosan aerogel particles that are promising as nasal or inhalation drug delivery systems. Obtaining chitosan aerogel particles includes the following steps: the preparation of a chitosan solution, gelation, solvent replacement, and supercritical drying. Particles of chitosan gels were obtained by spraying and homogenization. The produced chitosan aerogel particles had specific surface areas of up to 254 m²/g, pore volumes of up to 1.53 cm³/g, and porosities of up to 99%. The aerodynamic diameters of the obtained chitosan aerogel particles were calculated, the values of which ranged from 13 to 59 µm. According to the calculation results, a CS1 sample was used as a matrix for obtaining the pharmaceutical composition "chitosan aerogel-clomipramine". X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the pharmaceutical composition determined the presence of clomipramine, predominantly in an amorphous form. Analysis of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) data showed that the mass loading of clomipramine was 35%. Experiments in vivo demonstrated the effectiveness of the pharmaceutical composition "chitosan aerogel-clomipramine" as carrier matrices for the targeted delivery of clomipramine by the "Nose-to-brain" mechanism of nasal administration. The maximum concentration of clomipramine in the frontal cortex and hippocampus was reached 30 min after administration.

Auto-Continuous Synthesis of Robust and Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Microspheres from Low-Cost Aqueous Sodium Silicate for Fast Dynamic Organics Removal

An efficient auto-continuous globing process was developed with a self-built apparatus to synthesize pure silica aerogel microspheres (PSAMs) using sodium silicate as a precursor and water as a solvent. A hydrophobic silica aerogel microsphere (HSAM) was obtained by methyl grafting. A reinforced silica aerogel microsphere (RSAM) was prepared by polymer cross-linking on the framework of the silica gel. The pH value of the reaction system and the temperature of the coagulating bath were critical to form perfect SAMs with a diameter of 3.0 ± 0.2 mm. The grafted methyl groups are thermally stable up to 400 °C. Polymer cross-linking increased the strength significantly, owing to the polymer coating on the framework of silica aerogel. The pore volumes of HSAM (6.44 cm³/g) and RSAM (3.17 cm³/g) were much higher than their state-of-the-art counterparts. Their specific surface areas were also at a high level. The HSAM and RSAM showed high organic sorption capacities, i.e., 17.9 g/g of pump oil, 11.8 g/g of hexane, and 22.2 mg/g of 10 mg/L methyl orange. The novel preparation method was facile, cost-effective, safe, and eco-friendly, and the resulting SAM sorbents were exceptional in capacity, dynamics, regenerability, and stability.

Efficient Removal of Polyvalent Metal Ions (Eu(III) and Th(IV)) from Aqueous Solutions by Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels

The removal of polyvalent metal ions Eu(III) and Th(IV) from aqueous solutions using polyurea-crosslinked calcium alginate (X-alginate) aerogels has been investigated by batch-type experiments under ambient conditions and pH 3. The material presents relatively high sorption capacity for Eu(III) (550 g kg⁻¹) and Th(IV) (211 g kg⁻¹). The lower sorption capacity for Th(IV) compared to Eu(III) is attributed to the net charge of the dominant species in solution under the given experimental conditions, which is Eu³⁺ for Eu(III), and Th(OH)₂²⁺ and Th(OH)₃⁺ for Th(IV). Generally, the sorption is an endothermic and entropy-driven process, and it follows the Langmuir isotherm model. According to the FTIR spectra, sorption occurs via formation of inner-sphere complexes between the surface functional groups and the f-metal cationic species. The presence of europium and thorium in the adsorbent material was confirmed and quantified with EDS analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an aerogel material used as an adsorbent for Eu(III). Compared to other materials used for the sorption of the specific ions, which are mostly carbon-based, X-alginate aerogels show by far the highest sorption capacity. Regarding Th(IV) uptake, X-alginate aerogels show the highest capacity per volume (27.9 g L⁻¹) among the aerogels reported in the literature. Both Eu(III) and Th(IV) could be recovered from the beads by 65% and 70%, respectively. Furthermore, Th(VI) could also be quantitatively removed from wastewater, while Eu(III) could be removed by 20%. The above, along with their stability in aqueous environments, make X-alginate aerogels attractive candidates for water treatment and metal recovery applications.

Polylactide-Grafted Metal-Alginate Aerogels

Τhis work describes the synthesis of PLA-grafted M-alginate (g-M-alginate; M: Ca²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺) aerogels. DL-lactide (LA) was attached on the surface of preformed M-alginate beads and was polymerized, using stannous octoate as catalyst and the –OH groups of the alginate backbone as initiators/points of attachment. The material properties of g-M-alginate aerogels were not affected much by grafting, because the linear PLA chains grew on the M-alginate framework like a brush and did not bridge their points of attachment as in polyurea-crosslinked M-alginate aerogels. Thus, all g-M-alginate aerogels retained the fibrous morphology of their parent M-alginate aerogels, and they were lightweight (bulk densities up to 0.24 g cm⁻³), macroporous/mesoporous materials with high porosities (up to 96% v/v). The BET surface areas were in the range of 154–542 m² g⁻¹, depending on the metal, the nature of the alginate framework and the PLA content. The latter was found at about 15% w/w for Ca- and Ni-based materials and at about 29% w/w for Co- and Cu-based materials. Overall, we have demonstrated a new methodology for the functionalization of alginate aerogels that opens the way to the synthesis of polylactide-crosslinked alginate aerogels with the use of multifunctional monomers.

Polyurea Aerogels: Synthesis, Material Properties, and Applications

Polyurea is an isocyanate derivative, and comprises the basis for a well-established class of polymeric aerogels. Polyurea aerogels are prepared either via reaction of multifunctional isocyanates with multifunctional amines, via reaction of multifunctional isocyanates and water, or via reaction of multifunctional isocyanates and mineral acids. The first method is the established one for the synthesis of polyurea, the third is a relatively new method that yields polyurea doped with metal oxides in one step, while the reaction of isocyanates with water has become the most popular route to polyurea aerogels. The intense interest in polyurea aerogels can be attributed in part to the low cost of the starting materials-especially via the water method-in part to the extremely broad array of nanostructural morphologies that allow study of the nanostructure of gels as a function of synthetic conditions, and in part to the broad array of functional properties that can be achieved even within a single chemical composition by simply adjusting the synthetic parameters. In addition, polyurea aerogels based on aromatic isocyanates are typically carbonizable materials, making them highly competitive alternatives to phenolic aerogels as precursors of carbon aerogels. Several types of polyurea aerogels are already at different stages of commercialization. This article is a comprehensive review of all polyurea-based aerogels, including polyurea-crosslinked oxide and biopolymer aerogels, from a fundamental nanostructure-material properties perspective, as well as from an application perspective in thermal and acoustic insulation, oil adsorption, ballistic protection, and environmental cleanup.

Noninvasive Detection, Tracking, and Characterization of Aerogel Implants Using Diagnostic Ultrasound

Medical implants are routinely tracked and monitored using different techniques, such as MRI, X-ray, and ultrasound. Due to the need for ionizing radiation, the two former methods pose a significant risk to tissue. Ultrasound imaging, however, is non-invasive and presents no known risk to human tissue. Aerogels are an emerging material with great potential in biomedical implants. While qualitative observation of ultrasound images by experts can already provide a lot of information about the implants and the surrounding structures, this paper describes the development and study of two simple B-Mode image analysis techniques based on attenuation measurements and echogenicity comparisons, which can further enhance the study of the biological tissues and implants, especially of different types of biocompatible aerogels.

Nitrogen-doped carbon composite derived from ZIF-8/polyaniline@cellulose-derived carbon aerogel for high-performance symmetric supercapacitors

Cellulose derived carbon aerogel (CA) with unique three-dimensional network coated with polyaniline (PANI) on its surface is used as a scaffolding framework to anchor ZIF-8. The designed ZIF-8 derived porous carbon (ZC)/PANI@CA (ZPCA) hybrid carbon composite through a facile solution immersion chemical route and subsequent carbonization process is employed as electrode for supercapacitor, which has contributed a large specific surface area, a hierarchical porous structure and reasonable N content (up to 6.27 at.%). The synthesized ZPCA electrode achieves an outstanding capacitance of 388 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 as well as an excellent cycling performance. More inspiringly, the symmetric supercapacitor based ZPCA achieves a high energy density of 13.4 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 250 W kg^-1 using 2 M KOH aqueous solution, and an ultrahigh energy density of 81.8 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 950 W kg^-1 is realized using Et₄NBF₄/AN electrolyte.

Evaluation of Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels for Seawater Decontamination

Polyurea-crosslinked Ca-alginate (X-Ca-alginate) aerogel beads (diameter: 3.3 mm) were evaluated as adsorbents of metal ions, organic solvents, and oils. They were prepared via reaction of an aromatic triisocyanate (Desmodur RE) with pre-formed Ca-alginate wet gels and consisted of 54% polyurea and 2% calcium. X-Ca-alginate aerogels are hydrophobic nanoporous materials (90% v/v porosity), with a high BET surface area (459 m²/g⁻¹), and adsorb Pb^II not only from ultrapure water (29 mg/g⁻¹) but also from seawater (13 mg/g⁻¹) with high selectivity. The adsorption mechanism involves replacement of Ca^II by Pb^II ions coordinated to the carboxylate groups of the alginate backbone. After treatment with a Na₂EDTA solution, the beads can be reused, without significant loss of activity for at least two times. X-Ca-alginate aerogels can also uptake organic solvents and oil from seawater; the volume of the adsorbate can be as high as the total pore volume of the aerogel (6.0 mL/g⁻¹), and the absorption is complete within seconds. X-Ca alginate aerogels are suitable for the decontamination of aquatic environments from a broader range of inorganic and organic pollutants.
