Innovative assembled optode device for enhanced in-situ ceric ions (Ce4+) evaluation and preconcentration in its real human, foods, water, and alloy samples

Cerium (Ce) are the most widely distributed rare earth element. However, humans exposed to Ce through inhalation have been reported to experience heat sensitivity, itching, and heightened taste and odour perception. The present study aims to develop an optical sensor device with a short response time and high selectivity for Ce amongst other ions in various environments. The potential applicability of a 6-hydroxy-5-((4-hydroxy-2-methylphenyl)diazenyl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (HHMDPD) assembled ligand as aceric ion (Ce4+)-selective caption optode was examined. After generating an ion pair with Tetra-n-octylammonium bromide (TOABr) and immobilizing on a tri-acetyl cellulose (TAC) membrane, the solubility of the HHMDPD ligand is improved. The constructed optode membrane reacts with Ce4+ by turning its orange colour to violet in Thiel buffer (pH of 5.5), which can be detected spectrophotometrically at λmax 667 nm. The measurement linearity was in the range of 0.70 - 18.7 × 10-6 mol/L of Ce4+ concentration with detection and quantification limits of 0.23 × 10-6 and 0.70 × 10-6 mol/L, respectively. Whatever the Ce4+ concentration in its real samples, the response time of the constructed device was 5.0 min. Additionally, it recorded repeatability and reproducibility with a %RSD of 1.37 and 2.55, respectively (n = 3). The proposed optode device exhibited complete reversibility, for multiple measurements, which could be easily achieved with the aid of a solution of HCl, 0.01 mol/L. The applicability of the proposed device has been effectively extended to analyze synthetic mixes corresponding to different Ce4+ real human, foods, water, and magnesium-based Ce4+ alloys.

Fluorescent and Electrochemical Sensor Based on Basic Red 9 Dye Functionalised Graphene Oxide-Montmorillonite Composite for Selective Detection of Cerium (III) Ion

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) has been prepared from used dry cells using modified Hummer's method and encapsulated with montmorillonite clay. To enhance its electrical property, the GO-MMT composite has been functionalised with Basic Red 9 dye. The sensor was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR spectroscopy, PXRD, SEM analysis, etc. Basic Red 9 dye functionalised GO-MMT composite has been employed for fluorescent and electrochemical detection of Ce3+ ion. The fluorescent turn-on sensing is sensitive, reversible and free from interference from other metal ions. The detection of Ce3+ ion by the sensor was also conducted in bovine serum albumin (BSA) medium. Pt electrode modified with the hybrid sensor produces excellent electrochemical change in presence of Ce3+ ion through cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry technique. The limit of detection (LOD) from fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry were calculated to be 0.6556 × 10- 9 M, 1.232 × 10- 9 M and 1.923 × 10- 9 M respectively.

Do amino acid functionalization stratagems on carbonaceous quantum dots imply multiple applications? A comprehensive review

Amino acids are the noteworthy entity among biological molecules with diverse properties such as zwitterionic and amphoteric. Functionalizing carbon-based quantum dots using amino acids might be used for the extreme enhancement of electronic and optical properties of quantum dots and improve the performance of the resultant amino acid-functionalized quantum dots. The amino acid-functionalized quantum dots are highly soluble, sustainable, and biocompatible with virtuous optical and electrical performance, which makes them potential and suitable candidates for fabricating optoelectronic devices. The tenacity of using amino acids as functional groups to functionalize quantum dots and their novel properties are conferred to attain their multiple applications. The goal of this review is to provide the choices of amino acids based on the desired applications and a variety of functionalization techniques to make them a noteworthy material for future applications. The method of one-step and two-step functionalization strategies along with the properties of the resultant functionalized quantum dots and their plausible applications and future scope of the material are highlighted. Amidation is the basic principle behind the functionalization of quantum dots with amino acids. This review would be an exciting prospect to explore the pathways of the possible applications in different domains, in which the amino acid-functionalized quantum dots have not yet been explored. Further, this review article helps in pitching a variety of prominent applications right from sensors to energy storage systems either using the optical property or electronic property of amino acid-functionalized quantum dots.
