Iron-based single-atom electrocatalysts: synthetic strategies and applications

Stabilizing Fe Single Atoms on Rutile-TiO2(110) Surface Via Atomic Substitution

Stable anchoring of dispersed metal atoms through either surface adsorption or lattice substitution on support surfaces is a prerequisite for highly efficient catalytic performance. Atomic-level insights into these processes are necessary to understand the metal-support interactions. Here, we identify multiple Fe single-atom configurations on the rutile-TiO2(110) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). Our results show that an Fe atom can either adsorb on a surface O site (configuration I) or stably substitute a surface lattice Ti atom (configuration II). A transformation from configuration I to configuration II can be induced by STM manipulation. Furthermore, the substitutional Fe atom can capture an additional Fe atom to form a dual Fe-Fe complex (configuration III). DFT calculations reveal that these Fe species contribute different states in either the bandgap or the conduction band. These atomistic insights pave the way for interrogating the integrated performance of nonprecious, TiO2-supported Fe single-atom catalysts.

The Advances, Challenges, and Perspectives on Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrogenous Substances to Ammonia: A Review

Ammonia (NH3) is considered to be a critical chemical feedstock in agriculture, industry, and other fields. However, conventional Haber-Bosch (HB) ammonia (NH3) production suffers from high energy consumption, harsh reaction conditions, and large carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the emergence of electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogenous substances to NH3 under ambient conditions as a new frontier, there are several bottleneck problems that impede the commercialization process. These include low catalytic efficiency, competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction, and difficulties in breaking the N≡N triple bond. In this review, we explore the recent advances in electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis, using nitrogen and nitrate as reactants. We focus on the contribution of the catalyst design, specifically based on molecular-catalyst interaction mechanisms, as well as chemical bond breaking and directional coupling mechanisms, to address the aforementioned problems during electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis. Finally, we discuss the relevant opportunities and challenges in this field.

Converting carbon black into an efficient and multi-site ORR electrocatalyst: the importance of bottom-up construction parameters

To boost efficient energy transitions, alternatives to expensive and unsustainable noble metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are needed. Having this in mind, carbon black - Black Pearls 2000 (BP) was enriched in active nitrogen-containing centers, including single-atom Fe-N sites surrounded by Fe nanoclusters, through a synthesis methodology employing only broadly available precursors. The methodical approach taken to optimize the synthesis conditions highlighted the importance of (1) a proper choice of the Fe precursor; (2) melamine as an N source to limit the formation of magnetite crystals and modulate the charge density nearby the active sites, and glucose to chelate/isolate Fe atoms and thus allow the Fe-N coordination to be established, with a limiting formation of Fe0 clusters; and (3) a careful dosing of the Fe load. The ORR on the optimized electrocatalyst (Fe0.06-N@BP) proceeds mostly through a four-electron pathway, having an onset potential (0.912 V vs. RHE) and limiting current density (4.757 mA cm-2) above those measured on Pt/C (0.882 V and 4.657 mA cm-2, respectively). Moreover, the current density yielded by Fe0.06-N@BP after 24 h at 0.4 V vs. RHE was still above that of Pt/C at t = 0 (4.44 mA cm-2), making it a promising alternative to noble metal-containing electrocatalysts in fuel cells.

The Renaissance of Ferrocene-Based Electrocatalysts: Properties, Synthesis Strategies, and Applications

The fascinating electrochemical properties of the redox-active compound ferrocene have inspired researchers across the globe to develop ferrocene-based electrocatalysts for a wide variety of applications. Advantages including excellent chemical and thermal stability, solubility in organic solvents, a pair of stable redox states, rapid electron transfer, and nontoxic nature improve its utility in various electrochemical applications. The use of ferrocene-based electrocatalysts enables control over the intrinsic properties and electroactive sites at the surface of the electrode to achieve specific electrochemical activities. Ferrocene and its derivatives can function as a potential redox medium that promotes electron transfer rates, thereby enhancing the reaction kinetics and electrochemical responses of the device. The outstanding electrocatalytic activity of ferrocene-based compounds at lower operating potentials enhances the specificity and sensitivity of reactions and also amplifies the response signals. Owing to their versatile redox chemistry and catalytic activities, ferrocene-based electrocatalysts are widely employed in various energy-related systems, molecular machines, and agricultural, biological, medicinal, and sensing applications. This review highlights the importance of ferrocene-based electrocatalysts, with emphasis on their properties, synthesis strategies for obtaining different ferrocene-based compounds, and their electrochemical applications.

Generation and engineering applications of sulfate radicals in environmental remediation

Sulfate radical (SO4•-)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have become promising alternatives in environmental remediation due to the higher redox potential (2.6-3.1 V) and longer half-life period (30-40 μs) of sulfate radicals compared with many other radicals such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH). The generation and mechanisms of SO4•- and the applications of SO4•--AOPs have been examined extensively, while those using sulfite as activation precursor and their comparisons among various activation precursors have rarely reviewed comprehensively. In this article, the latest progresses in SO4•--AOPs were comprehensively reviewed and commented on. First of all, the generation of SO4•- was summarized via the two activation methods using various oxidant precursors, and the generation mechanisms were also presented, which provides a reference for guiding researchers to better select two precursors. Secondly, the reaction mechanisms of SO4•- were reviewed for organic pollutant degradation, and the reactivity was systematically compared between SO4•- and •OH. Thirdly, methods for SO4•- detection were reviewed which include quantitative and qualitative ones, over which current controversies were discussed. Fourthly, the applications of SO4•--AOPs in various environmental remediation were summarized, and the advantages, challenges, and prospects were also commented. At last, future research needs for SO4•--AOPs were also proposed consequently. This review could lead to better understanding and applications of SO4•--AOPs in environmental remediations.

Advances in iron-based electrocatalysts for nitrate reduction

Excessive nitrate has been a critical issue in the water environment, originating from the burning of fossil fuels, inefficient use of nitrogen fertilizers, and discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater. Among the effective treatments for nitrate reduction, electrocatalysis has become an advanced technique because it uses electrons as green reducing agents and can achieve high selectivity through cathode potential control. The effectiveness of electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NO₃RR) mainly lies in the electrocatalyst. Iron-based catalysts have the advantages of high activity and low cost, which are well-used in the field of electrocatalytic nitrates. A comprehensive overview of the electrocatalytic mechanism and the iron-based materials for NO₃RR are given in terms of monometallic iron-based materials as well as bimetallic and oxide iron-based materials. A detailed introduction to NO₃RR on zero valent iron, single-atom iron catalysts, and Cu/Fe-based bimetallic electrocatalysts are provided, as they are essential for the improvement of NO₃RR performance. Finally, the advantages of iron-based materials for NO₃RR and the problems in current applications are summarized, and the development prospects of efficient iron-based catalysts are proposed.

Doping of the Mn vacancy of Mn2B2 with a single different transition metal atom as the dual-function electrocatalyst

The design of efficient electrocatalysts is essential to enhance the performance of rechargeable metal-air cells, renewable fuel cells and overall water splitting. Based on this, how to improve the catalytic activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) becomes self-evident. Currently, single atom catalysts (SACs) are widely used as structural design models for the OER, ORR and HER because of the single active site and maximum metal atom utilization, but significant challenges remain. Herein, the catalytic properties of the OER, ORR and HER with a single metal atom as the active site are discussed through first-principles calculations by introducing a single metal atom in the Mn vacancy of Mn₂B₂ (TM@Mn₂B₂, TM = Au, Ag, Co, Cd, Cu, Ir, Pd, Ni, Rh, Ru and Pt). The results show that Ni@Mn₂B₂ is suitable as a dual-function electrocatalyst for the OER/ORR with overpotentials of 0.38 V and 0.37 V, which are lower than those of the OER overpotential of RuO₂/IrO₂ (0.42 V/0.56 V) and the ORR overpotential of Pt (0.45 V). Meanwhile, Pt@Mn₂B₂ is available as an OER/HER dual-function electrocatalyst for overall water splitting with a lower overpotential of OER (0.45 V) and lower |ΔG_H| (-0.15eV) under 1/4 hydrogen coverage for the HER. This work proposes a practical strategy for developing single metal atom doped MBene as a dual-function electrocatalyst.

Single-Atom (Iron-Based) Catalysts: Synthesis and Applications

Supported single-metal atom catalysts (SACs) are constituted of isolated active metal centers, which are heterogenized on inert supports such as graphene, porous carbon, and metal oxides. Their thermal stability, electronic properties, and catalytic activities can be controlled via interactions between the single-metal atom center and neighboring heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Due to the atomic dispersion of the active catalytic centers, the amount of metal required for catalysis can be decreased, thus offering new possibilities to control the selectivity of a given transformation as well as to improve catalyst turnover frequencies and turnover numbers. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the synthesis of Fe-SACs with a focus on anchoring single atoms (SA) on carbon/graphene supports. The characterization of these advanced materials using various spectroscopic techniques and their applications in diverse research areas are described. When applicable, mechanistic investigations conducted to understand the specific behavior of Fe-SACs-based catalysts are highlighted, including the use of theoretical models.

Recent Advances in Waste Plastic Transformation into Valuable Platinum-Group Metal-Free Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Plastic waste causes severe environmental hazards, owing to inadequate disposal and limited recycling. Under the framework of circular economy, there are urgent demands to valorize plastic waste more safely and sustainably. Therefore, much scientific interest has been witnessed recently in plastic waste-derived electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), where the plastic waste acts as a cost-effective and easily available precursor for the carbon backbone. The ORR is not only a key efficiency indicator for fuel cells and metal-air batteries but also a major obstacle for their commercial realization. The applicability of the aforementioned electrochemical devices is limited, owing to sluggish ORR activity and expensive platinum-group metal electrocatalysts. However, waste-derived ORR electrocatalysts are emerging as a potential substitute that could be inexpensively fabricated upon the conversion of plastic waste into active materials containing earth-abundant transition metals. In this Minireview, very recent research developments regarding plastic waste-derived ORR electrocatalysts are critically summarized with a prime focus on the followed synthesis routes, physicochemical properties of the derived electrocatalysts, and their ultimate electrochemical performance. Finally, the prospects for the future development of plastic waste-derived electrocatalysts are discussed.
