Rational Design of Fe Single Sites Supported on Hierarchical Zeolites via Atomic Layer Deposition for Few-Walled Carbon Nanotube Production

Metal single-site catalysts have recently played an essential role in catalysis due to their enhanced activity, selectivity, and precise reaction control compared to those of conventional metal cluster catalysts. However, the rational design and catalytic application of metal single-site catalysts are still in the early stages of development. In this contribution, we report the rational design of Fe single sites incorporated in a hierarchical ZSM-5 via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The designer catalysts demonstrated highly dispersed Fe species, predominantly stabilized by oxygen atoms in the zeolite framework at terminal, isolated, and vicinal silanol groups within the micropores and external surfaces of the zeolite. The successful incorporation of highly thermally stable and uniform Fe single sites into hierarchical zeolite through ALD represents a significant advancement in few-walled carbon nanotube production. The inner and outer diameters of produced CNTs are approximately 4.4 ± 2.4 and 8.6 ± 1.8 nm, respectively, notably smaller than those produced via traditional impregnated catalysts. This example emphasizes the concept of rational design of a single Fe site dispersed on a hierarchical ZSM-5 surface, which is anticipated to be a promising catalyst for advancing catalytic applications.

Facile Synthesis of the Polyaniline@Waste Cellulosic Nanocomposite for the Efficient Decontamination of Copper(II) and Phenol from Wastewater

The existence of heavy metals and organic pollutants in wastewater is a threat to the ecosystem and a challenge for researchers to remove using common technology. Herein, a facile one-step in situ oxidative polymerization synthesis method has been used to fabricate polyaniline@waste cellulosic nanocomposite adsornt, polyaniline-embedded waste tissue paper (PANI@WTP) to remove copper(II) and phenol from the aqueous solution. The structural and surface properties of the synthesized materials were examined by XRD, FTIR, TEM, and a zeta potential analyzer. The scavenging of the Cu(II) and phenol onto the prepared materials was investigated as a function of interaction time, pollutant concentration, and solution pH. Advanced kinetics and isotherms modeling is used to explore the Cu(II) ion and phenol adsorption mechanisms. The synthesized PANI@WTP adsorbent showed a high intake capacity for Cu(II) than phenol, with the maximum calculated adsorption capacity of 605.20 and 501.23 mg g^-1, respectively. The Langmuir equilibrium isotherm model is well-fitted for Cu(II) and phenol adsorption onto the PANI@WTP. The superior scavenging capability of the PANI@WTP for Cu(II) and phenol could be explained based on the host-guest interaction forces and large active sites. Moreover, the efficiency of the PANI@WTP for Cu(II) and phenol scavenging was excellent even after the five cycles of regeneration.

A meta-analysis of the effects of clay mineral supplementation on alkaline phosphatase, broiler health, and performance

The crucial constraint in the broiler production sector is feed efficiency; many feed additives have been widely employed to increase broiler growth. Nonetheless, some of these substances exacerbate health and animal-based food product safety concerns. This meta-analysis examines the effect of clay minerals on alkaline phosphatase (ALP), broiler health, and performance. Metadata was constructed from 369 data items that were harvested from 86 studies. The addition of clay minerals was set as a fixed effect and the difference between experiments was established as a random effect. The metadata were fitted using a linear mixed model. Due to the presence of clay minerals, growth performance as assessed by body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and performance efficiency index (PEI) increased significantly (P < 0.01). In the total period, the increases of BW, ADG, and PEI were 4.12 g, 0.0714 g/d, and 0.648, respectively, per unit of clay minerals added. Clay minerals did not affect blood serum parameters (e.g., ALP and calcium). The IgA and IgM concentrations in the jejunum and ileum were significantly greater (P < 0.01) in the starter phase. Among clay minerals, broilers fed diets with aluminosilicate, halloysite, kaolin, and zeolite consistently exhibited higher (P < 0.05) BW, ADG, PEI, and lower feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05) in the finisher phase. Aluminosilicate was the only clay that increased (P < 0.05) secretory IgA concentration in both jejunum and ileum. In conclusion, clay minerals could be used as a growth promoter, especially during the finisher phase, without adversely affecting feed intake, liver function, and mineral metabolism in broiler chickens. Aluminosilicate was superior in improving the mucosal immunity status of broiler chickens.

Adsorption of cerium (III) by zeolites synthesized from kaolinite after rare earth elements (REEs) recovery

REE recovery tests were performed on a kaolinite and the corresponding metakaolinite using pH static leaching method. Test results show that over 90% of REEs were leached from the metakaolinite sample at pH 0.00 and 25 °C, while less than 2% of the major constituents were simultaneously extracted. Therefore, selective leaching of REEs from the metakaolinite was achieved through pH static leaching. The leaching residue was then subjected to alkaline activation for zeolites synthesis. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and incubation period under various alkaline conditions on the synthesis of zeolites were systematically investigated. The phase compositions, textual properties, and morphology of the synthesized products were characterized. Pure zeolite A with 100% relative crystallinity was successfully synthesized at 80 °C for 6 h when using 3 M NaOH as the alkaline activator. While as the synthesis conditions became increasingly harsh, the metastable zeolite A gradually transformed into more stable sodalite, and three types of zeolites, including zeolite A, sodalite, and their mixtures, were obtained. After that, various types of zeolites were applied for Ce³⁺ adsorption from aqueous solutions. High purity sodalite showed a higher adsorption capacity of 53 mg/g at pH 6.0 and 25 °C as a result of the superior textual properties compared with zeolite A. The adsorption data were suitably fitted by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models. Findings from this study suggest that the kaolinite is a potential source for REE recovery, and the leaching residue is suitable for the synthesis of zeolites, which can be used as promising adsorbents for Ce³⁺ recovery.

Tandem Reactions over Zeolite-Based Catalysts in Syngas Conversion

Syngas conversion can play a vital role in providing energy and chemical supplies while meeting environmental requirements as the world gradually shifts toward a net-zero. While prospects of this process cannot be doubted, there is a lingering challenge in distinct product selectivity over the bulk transitional metal catalysts. To advance research in this respect, composite catalysts comprising traditional metal catalysts and zeolites have been deployed to distinct product selectivity while suppressing side reactions. Zeolites are common but highly efficient materials used in the chemical industry for hydroprocessing. Combining the advantages of zeolites and some transition metal catalysts has promoted the catalytic production of various hydrocarbons (e.g., light olefins, aromatics, and liquid fuels) and oxygenates (e.g., methanol, dimethyl ether, formic acid, and higher alcohols) from syngas. In this outlook, a thorough revelation on recent progress in syngas conversion to various products over metal-zeolite composite catalysts is validated. The strategies adopted to couple the metal species and zeolite material into a composite as well as the consequential morphologies for specific product selectivity are highlighted. The key zeolite descriptors that influence catalytic performance, such as framework topologies, proximity and confinement effects, acidities and cations, pore systems, and particle sizes are discussed to provide a deep understanding of the significance of zeolites in syngas conversion. Finally, an outlook regarding challenges and opportunities for syngas conversion using zeolite-based catalysts to meet emerging energy and environmental demands is also presented.

From waste to waste: iron blast furnace slag for heavy metal ions removal from aqueous system

Inordinate levels of heavy metals in water sources have long been a matter of concern, posing serious environmental and public health risks. Adsorption, on the other hand, is a viable technique for removing heavy metals from water due to its high efficiency, low cost, and ease of operation. Blast furnace slag (BFS) is considered a cheap sorbent for the get rid of Co²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions from aqueous media. The nonmodified slag is characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential. The removal of Co²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions was carried out using batch adsorption experiments from an aqueous medium. The influence of several variables as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, temperature, and initial ions concentration was considered. The isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic, and recyclability were also conducted. The maximum uptake capacity for Co²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was 43.8 and 30.2 mg g^-1 achieved at pH 6 after 60 min contact time. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of BFS for Co²⁺ and Pb²⁺ fitted well to Avrami and Freundlich models, respectively. The main adsorption mechanism between BFS and the metal ions was ion exchange. The regeneration of the used slag was studied for reuse many cycles. In terms of economics and scalability, nonmodified BFS treatment has great potential as a cost-effective adsorbent that could be used in water pollution treatment.

Organic-Free Synthesis of Finned Mordenite Zeolite

Mordenite is a well-known zeolite widely used for industrial processes. However, its pore architecture can be inconvenient due to diffusional issues. A study of the synthesis parameters from an organic-free dense gel was carried out to control the crystal morphology, which resulted in finned mordenite zeolite particles. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, ²⁹Si and ²⁷Al MAS-NMR, elemental analysis, nitrogen physisorption, SEM, and TEM. We found that careful manipulation of the hydrothermal parameters directly affected the sizes and morphologies of the crystallites and particles, as well as the textural properties of the final products. Additionally, it was found that mordenite could exhibit a fin morphology with additional mesoporosity, which is a promising means to reduce the diffusional problems of one-dimensional-channel zeolites.

Dealumination and Characterization of Natural Mordenite-Rich Tuffs

The present study evaluates the feasibility of partially dealuminated natural mordenite as a catalyst support by studying improvement in its textural properties. This is the first study that reports the dealumination of natural zeolite-based tuffs from Ecuador. For this purpose, mordenite-rich tuffs were obtained from deposits close to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The raw material was micronized in order to increase its surface, and treated with NH₄Cl. NH₄⁺ cation-exchanged samples were finally reacted with HCl_(aq) to complete the dealumination process. The partially dealuminated samples were characterized using techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and identification of their textural properties. Dealumination with HCl_(aq) increased the Si/Al ratio up to 9 and kept the crystallographic structure of natural mordenite, as XRD results showed that the structure of mordenite was not altered after the dealumination process. On the other hand, textural properties such as surface area and microporosity were improved as compared to natural mordenite. In view of these results, the feasibility of using natural mordenite as a catalyst support is discussed in this study.

A Short Review on the Utilization of Incense Sticks Ash as an Emerging and Overlooked Material for the Synthesis of Zeolites

The traditional hydrothermal synthesis methods are mainly performed under batch operation, which generally takes few days to weeks to yield a zeolite with the desired properties and structure. The zeolites are the backbone of the petrochemical and wastewater industries due to their importance. The commercial methods for zeolite synthesis are expensive, laborious and energy intensive. Among waste products, incense sticks ash is a compound of aluminosilicates and could act as a potential candidate for the synthesis of zeolites for daily needs in these industries. Incense sticks ash is the byproduct of religious places and houses and is rich in Ca, Mg, Al and Si. As a result, incense sticks ash can be proven to be a potential candidate for the formation of calcium-rich zeolites. The formation of zeolites from incense sticks ash is an economical, reliable and eco-friendly method. The application of incense sticks ash for zeolite synthesis can also minimize the problem related to its disposal in the water bodies, which will also minimize the solid waste in countries where it is considered sacred and generated in tons every day.

Fabrication and Application of Zeolite/Acanthophora Spicifera Nanoporous Composite for Adsorption of Congo Red Dye from Wastewater

Systematic investigations involving laboratory, analytical, and field trials were carried out to obtain the most efficient adsorbent for the removal of congo red (CR) dye from industrial effluent. Modification of the zeolite (Z) by the Acanthophora Spicifera algae (AS; marine algae) was evaluated in terms of adsorption capability of the zeolite to remove CR dye from aqueous solution. The zeolite/algae composite (ZAS) was fabricated using the wet impregnation technique. The AS, Z, and the synthesized ZAS composite were analyzed utilizing various characterization techniques. The newly synthesized ZAS composite has an adsorption capacity that is significantly higher than that of Z and AS, particularly at low CR concentrations. Batch experiments were carried out to explore the effects of different experimental factors, as well as the dye adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Owing to the presence of intermolecular interactions, the computational analysis showed that the adsorption of the CR molecule on zeolite surfaces is exothermic, energetically favorable, and spontaneous. Furthermore, growing the zeolite surface area has no discernible effect on the adsorption energies in all configurations. The ZAS composite may be used as a low-cost substitute adsorbent for the removal of anionic dyes from industrial wastewater at lower dye concentrations, according to the experimental results. Adsorption of CR dye onto Z, AS, and ZAS adsorbents was adequately explained by pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm. The sorption mechanism was also evaluated using Weber's intra-particle diffusion module. Finally, field testing revealed that the newly synthesized adsorbent was 98.0% efficient at extracting dyes from industrial wastewater, proving the foundation of modern eco-friendly materials that aid in the reuse of industrial wastewater.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Sorption by Functionalized Humic Acids Immobilized in Micro- and Nano-Zeolites

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous compounds originating from anthropogenic activity. Due to their carcinogenic properties for humans, several technologies have been developed for PAH removal. Sorption with natural and organic materials is currently one of the most studied due to its low cost and its environmentally friendly nature. In this work, a hybrid sorbent involving functionalized humic acids (HAs) and nano-zeolite is proposed to entrap PAHs. The use of functionalized HAs immobilized in a porous support is designed to address the instability of HAs in solution, which has been already reported. HA functionalization was carried out to increase the non-polarity of HAs and aliphatic group formation. The HAs were functionalized by esterification/etherification with alkyl halides, and their chemical changes were verified by FTIR and NMR. The sorption isotherms of the functionalized HAs in micro- and nano-zeolites were used to assess the performance of the nano-zeolites in adsorbing these HAs. The hybrid support allowed the removal of anthracene and pyrene at percentages higher than 90%; fluoranthene, of angular molecular structure, was adsorbed at 85%. PAHs are ubiquitous in the environment, and a stable sorption of them in solid matrices will allow their removal from the environment through effective and environmentally friendly methods.

Synthesis of Hierarchical MOR-Type Zeolites with Improved Catalytic Properties

Hierarchical MOR-type zeolites were synthesized in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a porogen agent. XRD proved that the concentration of CTAB in the synthesis medium plays an essential role in forming pure hierarchical MOR-type material. Above a CTAB concentration of 0.04 mol·L-1, amorphous materials are observed. These hierarchical mordenite possess a higher porous volume compared to its counterpart conventional micrometer crystals. Nitrogen sorption showed the presence of mesoporosity for all mordenite samples synthesized in the presence of CTAB. The creation of mesopores due to the presence of CTAB in the synthesis medium does not occur at the expense of zeolite micropores. In addition, mesoporous volume and BET surface seem to increase upon the increase of CTAB concentration in the synthesis medium. The Si/Al ratio of the zeolite framework can be increased from 5.5 to 9.1 by halving the aluminum content present in the synthesis gel. These synthesized hierarchical MOR-type zeolites possess an improved catalytic activity for n-hexane cracking compared to large zeolite crystals obtained in the absence of CTAB.
