Palladium supported on mixed-metal-organic framework (Co-Mn-MOF-74) for efficient catalytic oxidation of CO

Bimetallic Copper-Cerium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Carbon Dioxide Capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly regarded as valuable adsorbent materials in materials science, particularly in the field of CO2 capture. While numerous single-metal-based MOFs have demonstrated exceptional CO2 adsorption capabilities, recent advancements have explored the potential of bimetallic MOFs for enhanced performance. In this study, a CuCe-BTC MOF was synthesized through a straightforward hydrothermal method, and its improved properties, such as high surface area, smaller pore size, and larger pore volume, were compared with those of the bare Ce-BTC. The impact of the Cu/Ce ratio (1:4, 1:2, 1:1, and 3:2) was systematically investigated to understand how adding a second metal influences the CO2 adsorption performance of the Ce-BTC MOF. Various characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 BET surface area analysis, were employed to assess the physical and chemical properties of the bare Ce-BTC and CuCe-BTC samples. Notably, CuCe-BTC-1:2 exhibited superior surface area (133 m2 g-1), small pore size (3.3 nm), and large pore volume (0.14 cm3 g-1) compared to the monometallic Ce-BTC. Furthermore, CuCe-BTC-1:2 demonstrated a superior CO2 adsorption capacity (0.74 mmol g-1), long-term stability, and good CO2/N2 selectivity. This research provides valuable insights into the design of metal-BTC frameworks and elucidates how introducing a second metal enhances the properties of the monometallic Ce-BTC-MOF, leading to improved CO2 capture performance.

Sugeno fuzzy inference system modeling and DFT calculations for the treatment of pesticide-laden water by newly developed arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal organic framework

The uncontrolled utilization of pesticides poses a significant risk to the environment and human health, making its management essential. In this regard, a new arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal-organic framework (Arg@m-Mn-MOF) was fabricated and assessed for the removal of cypermethrin (CYP) and chlorpyrifos (CHL) from aqueous system. The Arg@m-Mn-MOF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Various parameters were optimized in a series of batch experiments and the following conditions were found optimal: pH: 4 and 5, contact time: 20 min, adsorbent dosage: 0.6 and 0.8 g L-1 with initial concentration: 10 mg L-1 and temperature: 298 K for CYP and CHL, respectively. The composite attained a maximum removal capacity of 44.84 and 71.42 mg g-1 for CYP and CHL, respectively. The elucidated data was strongly fitted to the pseudo-second-order model of kinetics (R2 > 0.98) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.98). Based upon 350 experimental datasets obtained from batch studies and interpolated data, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was elucidated with R2 > 0.97 (CHL) and > 0.91 (CYP). The adsorption energy (- 11.67 kcal mol-1) calculated by Gaussian software suggests a good interaction between arginine and CHL through H-bonding. The present study's findings suggested the prepared Arg@m-Mn-MOF as a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of pesticides from agriculture runoff.

Impact of Compression on the Textural and Structural Properties of CPO-27(Ni)

The employment of metal-organic frameworks in powder form is undesirable from an industrial perspective due to process and safety issues. This work is devoted to evaluating the impact of compression on the textural and structural properties of CPO-27(Ni). For this purpose, CPO-27(Ni) was synthesized under hydrosolvothermal conditions and characterized. Then, the resulting powder was compressed into binderless pellets using variable compression forces ranging from 5-90 kN (37-678 MPa) and characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction to evaluate textural, thermal and structural changes. Both textural and structural properties decreased with increasing compression force. Thermal stability was impacted in pellets compressed at forces over 70 kN. CPO-27(Ni) pelletized at 5, 8 and 10 kN, and retained more than 94% of its initial textural properties, while a loss of about one-third of the textural property was observed for the two most compressed samples (70 and 90 kN) compared to the starting powder.

MOF-based catalysts: insights into the chemical transformation of greenhouse and toxic gases

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts are outstanding alternative materials for the chemical transformation of greenhouse and toxic gases into high-add-value products. MOF catalysts exhibit remarkable properties to host different active sites. The combination of catalytic properties of MOFs is mentioned in order to understand their application. Furthermore, the main catalytic reactions, which involve the chemical transformation of CH4, CO2, NOx, fluorinated gases, O3, CO, VOCs, and H2S, are highlighted. The main active centers and reaction conditions for these reactions are presented and discussed to understand the reaction mechanisms. Interestingly, implementing MOF materials as catalysts for toxic gas-phase reactions is a great opportunity to provide new alternatives to enhance the air quality of our planet.

Synthesis of Highly Efficient and Recyclable Bimetallic Cox-Fe1-x-MOF for the Synthesis of Xanthan and Removal of Toxic Pb2+ and Cd2+ Ions

Mono-(Fe) and bimetallic Co_x-Fe_1-x-MOF with different Co and Fe contents was successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The structural properties of the prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed the successful formation of mono and mixed Co_x-Fe_1-x-MOF. Also, the results of TEM displayed that the particle structure of Co_x-Fe_1-x-MOF changed to octahedral after the addition of cobalt. The surface acidity results illustrated that the samples showed both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, and Co_x-Fe_1-x-MOF possessed more surface acidity than Fe-MOF. The catalytic performance of the prepared samples was tested by synthesis of 14-phenyl-14H-dibenzo [a, j] xanthene (xanthene), and bimetallic Co_x-Fe_1-x-MOF showed higher activity compared to monometallic Fe-MOF. The sample with Co_0.50-Fe_0.50-MOF gave the highest yield of xanthene with 90.2%. In addition, the prepared samples were used for removal of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions from the aqueous solution. The sample with Co_0.50-Fe_0.50-MOF showed the highest removal efficiency compared with mono- and other bimetallic samples. The results illustrated that the addition of Co to Fe enhanced the structural properties, acidity, and catalytic performance of the prepared samples due to the synergistic effect between Fe and Co ions. According to the obtained results, the prepared samples showed great potentials for the synthesis of pharmacologically active compounds and environmental protection.

Investigation of palladium catalysts in mesoporous silica support for CO oxidation and CO2 adsorption

The oxidation of Carbon monoxide (CO) to Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most extensively investigated reactions in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, and it occurs via molecular rearrangements induced by catalytic metal atoms with oxygen intermediates. CO oxidation and CO2 capture are instrumental processes in the reduction of green-house gas emissions, both of which are used in low-temperature CO oxidation in the catalytic converters of vehicles. CO oxidation and CO2 adsorption at different temperatures are evaluated for palladium-supported silica aerogel (Pd/SiO2). The synthesized catalyst was active and stable for low-temperature CO oxidation. The catalytic activity was enhanced after the first cycle due to the reconditioning of the catalyst's pores. It was found that the presence of oxide forms of palladium in the SiO2 microstructure, influences the performance of the catalysts due to oxygen vacancies that increases the frequency of active sites. CO2 gas adsorption onto Pd/SiO2 was investigated at a wide-ranging temperature from 16 to 120 °C and pressures ∼1 MPa as determined from the isotherms that were evaluated, where CO2 showed the highest equilibrium adsorption capacity at 16 °C. The Langmuir model was employed to study the equilibrium adsorption behavior. Finally, the effect of moisture on CO oxidation and CO2 adsorption was considered to account for usage in real-world applications. Overall, mesoporous Pd/SiO2 aerogel shows potential as a material capable of removing CO from the environment and capturing CO2 at low temperatures.

A Facile Approach of Fabricating Bifunctional Catalysts for Redox Applications by Uniformly Immobilized Metallic Nanoparticles on NiCr LDH

This study discloses the development of NiCr LDH, Ag@NiCr LDH, and Pd@NiCr LDH bifunction catalysts using a hydrothermal coprecipitation method followed by sol immobilization of metallic nanoparticles. The structures and morphologies of the synthesized nanocomposites were analyzed using FTIR, XRD, XPS, BET, FESEM-EDX, and HRTEM. The catalytic effectiveness of the samples was evaluated by tracking the progression of NaBH₄-mediated nitrobenzene (NB) reduction to aniline and CO oxidation using UV-visible spectrophotometry and an infrared gas analyzer, respectively. Pd@NiCr LDH displayed much higher performance for both reactions than the bare NiCr LDH. The catalyst Pd@NiCr LDH showed robust catalytic activity in both the oxidation of carbon monoxide (T_50% (136.1 °C) and T_100% (200.2 °C)) and NaBH₄-mediated nitrobenzene reduction (98.7% conversion and 0.365 min^-1 rate constant). The results disclose that the Ni²⁺@ Cr³⁺/Cr⁶⁺ @Pd° ion pairs inside the LDH act as a charge transfer center and hence significantly enhance the catalytic performance. As a result, this research offers the novel NiCr LDH catalyst as a bifunctional catalyst for air depollution control and the organic transformation process.

Design and Development of Novel Composites Containing Nickel Ferrites Supported on Activated Carbon Derived from Agricultural Wastes and Its Application in Water Remediation

Recently, efficient decontamination of water and wastewater have attracted global attention due to the deficiency in the world's water sources. Herein, activated carbon (AC) derived from willow catkins (WCs) was successfully synthesized using chemical modification techniques and then loaded with different weight percentages of nickel ferrite nanocomposites (10, 25, 45, and 65 wt.%) via a one-step hydrothermal method. The morphology, chemical structure, and surface composition of the nickel ferrite supported on AC (NFAC) were analyzed by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and FTIR spectroscopy. Textural properties (surface area) of the nanocomposites (NC) were investigated by using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The prepared nanocomposites were tested on different dyes to form a system for water remediation and make this photocatalyst convenient to recycle. The photodegradation of rhodamine B dye was investigated by adjusting a variety of factors such as the amount of nickel in nanocomposites, the weight of photocatalyst, reaction time, and photocatalyst reusability. The 45NFAC photocatalyst exhibits excellent degradation efficiency toward rhodamine B dye, reaching 99.7% in 90 min under a simulated source of sunlight. To summarize, NFAC nanocomposites are potential photocatalysts for water environmental remediation because they are effective, reliable, and reusable.

Pd/Ni-metal-organic framework-derived porous carbon nanosheets for efficient CO oxidation over a wide pH range

Metal nanocrystal ornamented metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of particular interest in multidisciplinary applications; however, their electrocatalytic CO oxidation performance over wide pH ranges is not yet reported. Herein, Ni-MOF-derived hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets (Ni-MOF/PC) with abundant Ni-N _x sites decorated with Pd nanocrystals (Pd/Ni-MOF/PC) were synthesized by microwave-irradiation (MW-I) followed by annealing at 900 °C and subsequent etching of Ni-MOF/C prior to Pd deposition. The fabrication mechanism comprises the generation of self-reduced reducing gases from triethylamine during the annealing and selective chemical etching of Ni, thereby facilitating the reduction of Ni-anchored MOF and Pd nanocrystal deposition with the aid of ethylene glycol and MW-I to yield Pd/Ni-N _x enriched MOF/PC. The synthetic strategies endear the Pd/Ni-MOF/PC with unique physicochemical merits: abundant defects, interconnected pores, high electrical conductivity, high surface area, Ni-deficient but more active sites for Pd/Ni-N _x in porous carbon nanosheets, and synergism. These merits endowed the CO oxidation activity and stability on Pd/Ni-MOF/PC substantially than those of Pd/Ni-MOF/C and Pd/C catalysts in wide pH conditions (i.e., KOH, HClO_4, and NaHCO₃). The CO oxidation activity study reveals the utilization of MOF/PC with metal nanocrystals (Pd/Ni) in CO oxidation catalysis.

Reaction Characteristics of Ni-Based Catalyst Supported by Al2O3 in a Fluidized Bed for CO2 Methanation

CO2 methanation is a promising technology to store renewable energy by converting carbon dioxide with green hydrogen into methane, which is known as power to gas (PtG). In this study, CO2 methanation performance of a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst was investigated in a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) and the axial gas concentration, temperature, and CO2 conversion were densely analyzed. Moreover, a modified reaction kinetic model was proposed, and the results were compared with experimental data. The bed temperature increased by 11 °C from 340 °C to 351 °C within the first 30 mm of the fluidized bed. The CO2 conversion was approximately 90% within 50 mm from the bottom of the reactor and was maintained above this height. The Ni/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited the highest CO2 conversion (95%) at 320 °C. Using a simple plug-flow reactor model, three optimized kinetic modification factors (1.5094, 0.0238, and 0.2466) were used to fit the experimental data. The hydrodynamic effects significantly influenced the chemical reaction kinetics of the BFB.

Gold-selenide quantum dots supported onto cesium ferrite nanocomposites for the efficient degradation of rhodamine B

In this work, different weight percentage of gold-selenide quantum dots (AuSe QDs) (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.0 wt.%) were successfully synthesized and decorated on cesium ferrite nanocomposite (Cs2Fe2O4 NC). The as-prepared pure AuSe QDs, pure Cs2Fe2O4 NC, and x wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts were investigated using different characterization techniques such as nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherms (BET), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The results show that AuSe QDs were uniformly distributed on Cs2Fe2O4NCs surface as spherical dots with an average size of 1.0-8.0 nm. While the Cs2Fe2O4 NCs possess an average size between 10 to 35 nm. The photocatalytic performance of x wt. % AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4NCs were measured through the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye as a model water pollutant, under a150 W-Mercury lamp with a filter (JB400) as a simulated source of visible light. The results revealed that the % degradation of RhB increased from 50.0 %, 59.1 %, 76.4 %, and to 99.15 % within 150 min for the pure Cs2Fe2O4, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts, respectively. The 5.0 wt.% AuSe/Cs2Fe2O4 NC sample showed highest photocatalytic activity. The effect of recycling also studied. High photocatalytic performance and superior stability confirmed that the prepared nanocomposites act as good photocatalysts.

A MOF Multifunctional Cargo Vehicle for Reactive Gas Delivery and Catalysis

Efficient delivery of reactive and toxic gaseous reagents to organic reactions was studied using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Simultaneous cargo vehicle and catalytic capabilities of several MOFs were probed for the first time using the examples of  aromatization, aminocarbonylation, and carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. These reactions highlight that MOFs can serve a dual role as a gas cargo vehicle and a catalyst,  leading to product formation with yields similar to reactions employing pure gases. Furthermore, the MOFs can be recycled without sacrificing product yield, while simultaneously maintaining crystallinity. The reported findings were supported crystallographically and spectroscopically (e.g.,  diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy), foreshadowing a pathway for the development of multifunctional MOF-based reagent-catalyst cargo vessels for reactive reagents, as an attractive alternative to the use of toxic pure gases or gas generators.

Facile and Green Synthesis of Silver Quantum Dots Immobilized onto a Polymeric CTS-PEO Blend for the Photocatalytic Degradation of p-Nitrophenol

Immobilization of inorganic metal quantum dots (especially, noble transition metals) onto organic polymers to synthesize nanometal-polymer composites (NMPCs) has attracted considerable attention because of their advanced optical, electrical, catalytic/photocatalytic, and biological properties. Herein, novel, highly efficient, stable, and visible light-active NMPC photocatalysts consisting of silver quantum dots (Ag QDs) immobilized onto polymeric chitosan-polyethylene oxide (CTS-PEO) blend sheets have been successfully prepared by an in situ self-assembly facile casting method as a facile and green approach. The CTS-PEO blend polymer acts as a reducing and a stabilizing agent for Ag QDs which does not generate any environmental chemical pollutant. The prepared x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites were fully characterized through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis, and UV/visible spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated the successful synthesis of the Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites by the interactions and complexation between x wt % Ag QDs and CTS-PEO blend sheets. TEM images revealed small granules randomly distributed onto the CTS-PEO blend sheets, indicating the immobilization of Ag QDs onto CTS-PEO composites. The presence of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and the shifting of the absorption edge toward higher wavelengths in the UV/vis spectra indicated the formation of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The Ag QDs in the polymeric blend matrix led to remarkable enhancement in the optical, thermal, electrical, and photocatalytic properties of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared composites was evaluated by the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under simulated sunlight. The maximum photocatalytic degradation reached 91.1% efficiency within 3 h for the 12.0 wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO photocatalyst. Generally, the Ag QDs immobilized onto CTS-PEO blend composites significantly enhance the SPR effect and the synergistic effect and reduce the band gap, leading to a high photocatalytic activity.

Non-noble MNP@MOF materials: synthesis and applications in heterogeneous catalysis

Transition metals have a long history in heterogeneous catalysis. Noble or precious transition metals have been widely used in this field. The advantage of noble and precious metals is obvious in 'heterogeneous catalysis'. However, the choice of Earth abundant metals is a sustainable alternative due to their abundance and low cost. Preparing these metals in the nanoscale dimension increases their surface area which also increases the catalytic reactions of these materials. Nevertheless, metals are unstable in the nanoparticle form and tend to form aggregates which restrict their applications. Loading metal nanoparticles (MNPs) into highly porous materials is among the many alternatives for combating the unstable nature of the active species. Among porous materials, highly crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are an assembly of metal ions/clusters with organic ligands, are the best candidate. MOFs, on their own, possess catalytic activity derived from the linkers and metal ions or clusters. The catalytic properties of both non-noble metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and MOFs can be improved by loading non-noble MNPs in MOFs yielding MNP@MOF composites with a variety of potential applications, given the synergy and based on the nature of the MNP and MOF. Here, we discussed the synthesis of MNP@MOF materials and the applications of non-noble MNP@MOF materials in heterogeneous catalysis.
