Renaissance of elemental phosphorus materials: properties, synthesis, and applications in sustainable energy and environment

The polymorphism of phosphorus-based materials has garnered much research interest, and the variable chemical bonding structures give rise to a variety of micro and nanostructures. Among the different types of materials containing phosphorus, elemental phosphorus materials (EPMs) constitute the foundation for the synthesis of related compounds. EPMs are experiencing a renaissance in the post-graphene era, thanks to recent advancements in the scaling-down of black phosphorus, amorphous red phosphorus, violet phosphorus, and fibrous phosphorus and consequently, diverse classes of low-dimensional sheets, ribbons, and dots of EPMs with intriguing properties have been produced. The nanostructured EPMs featuring tunable bandgaps, moderate carrier mobility, and excellent optical absorption have shown great potential in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. It is thus important to have a good understanding of the differences and interrelationships among diverse EPMs, their intrinsic physical and chemical properties, the synthesis of specific structures, and the selection of suitable nanostructures of EPMs for particular applications. In this comprehensive review, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis and discussion of the fundamental physicochemical properties, synthesis, and applications of EPMs in the areas of energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Our evaluations are based on recent literature on well-established phosphorus allotropes and theoretical predictions of new EPMs. The objective of this review is to enhance our comprehension of the characteristics of EPMs, keep abreast of recent advances, and provide guidance for future research of EPMs in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

High-Alkaline Water-Splitting Activity of Mesoporous 3D Heterostructures: An Amorphous-Shell@Crystalline-Core Nano-Assembly of Co-Ni-Phosphate Ultrathin-Nanosheets and V- Doped Cobalt-Nitride Nanowires

Introducing amorphous and ultrathin nanosheets of transition bimetal phosphate arrays that are highly active in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as shells over an electronically modulated crystalline core with low hydrogen absorption energy for an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can boost the sluggish kinetics of the OER and HER in alkaline electrolytes. Therefore, in this study, ultrathin and amorphous cobalt-nickel-phosphate (CoNiPOx ) nanosheet arrays are deposited over vanadium (V)-doped cobalt-nitride (V3% -Co4 N) crystalline core nanowires to obtain amorphous-shell@crystalline-core mesoporous 3D-heterostructures (CoNiPOx @V-Co4 N/NF) as bifunctional electrocatalysts. The optimized electrocatalyst shows extremely low HER and OER overpotentials of 53 and 270 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , respectively. The CoNiPOx @V3% -Co4 N/NF (+/-) electrolyzer utilizing the electrocatalyst as both anode and cathode demonstrates remarkable overall water-splitting activity, requiring a cell potential of only 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 , 30 mV lower than that of the RuO2 /NF (+)/20%-Pt/C/NF (-) electrolyzer. Such impressive bifunctional activities can be attributed to abundant active sites, adjusted electronic structure, lower charge-transfer resistance, enhanced electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and surface- and volume-confined electrocatalysis resulting from the synergistic effects of the crystalline V3% -Co4 N core and amorphous CoNiPOx shells boosting water splitting in alkaline media.

The effect of heteroatom doping on the active metal site of CoS2 for hydrogen evolution reaction

The exploration of cost-effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts through water splitting is important for developing clean energy technology and devices. The application of CoS₂ in HER has been drawing more and more attention due to its low cost and relatively satisfactory HER catalytic performance. And CoS₂ was found to exhibit excellent HER catalytic performance after appropriate doping according to other experimental investigations. However, the theoretical simulation and the intrinsic catalytic mechanism of CoS₂ remains insufficiently investigated. Therefore, in this study, density functional theory is used to investigate the HER catalytic activity of CoS₂ doped with a heteroatom. The results show that Pt-, N- and O-doped CoS₂ demonstrates smaller Gibbs free energies close to that of Pt, compared with the original CoS₂ and CoS₂ doped with other atoms. Furthermore, HER catalytic performance of CoS₂ can be improved by tuning d-band centers of H adsorption sites. This study provides an effective method to achieve modified CoS₂ for high-performance HER and to investigate other transition metal sulfides as HER electrode.
